Claims
- 1. An apparatus for measuring temperatures in a continuous block caster, comprising:
- (a) a chilling block having a thickness in the z-direction and a width in the y-direction;
- (b) multiple means for measuring temperature disposed in different positions relative to the z-direction of said block;
- (c) multiple means for measuring temperature disposed in different positions relative to the y-direction of said block;
- (d) means for:
- (i) receiving temperature measurement data from said means for measuring temperature; and
- (ii) sending said data to means for controlling cooling of said block.
- 2. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said means for measuring temperature comprise thermocouples.
- 3. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said means for receiving and sending temperature measurement data comprises a telemetry unit.
- 4. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said means for measuring temperature comprise temperature sensors in fixed locations relative to said caster.
- 5. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said means for measuring temperature are in fixed locations underneath said block.
- 6. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said means for measuring temperature are in movable positions throughout the caster.
- 7. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said chilling block has a length in the x-direction, said caster further comprising:
- (e) multiple means for measuring temperature disposed in different positions in the x-direction of said block.
- 8. A method for cooling molten metal in a continuous caster, comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing molten metal to a moving mold having a thickness in the z-direction, a length in the x-direction and a width in the y-direction;
- (b) extracting heat from molten metal to obtain a solidified cast;
- (c) cooling said moving mold in a separate, cooling region by contacting said moving mold with cooling fluid to extract heat from said moving mold; and
- (d) controlling the cooling of said moving mold on an ongoing basis by independently controlling the cooling in the x-direction and the y-direction.
- 9. The method as claimed in claim 8, wherein said controlling the cooling of said moving mold comprises changing cooling fluid flowrates.
- 10. The method as claimed in claim 8, wherein said controlling the cooling of said moving mold comprises changing cooling fluid temperatures.
- 11. The method as claimed in claim 8, wherein said controlling the cooling of said moving mold comprises changing cooling fluid composition.
- 12. The method as claimed in claim 8, further comprising:
- (e) controlling the cooling of said moving mold in the z-direction by receiving temperature measurement data from a device for measuring temperature and sending said data to a device for controlling cooling of said moving mold.
- 13. A method for cooling molten metal in a continuous caster, comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing molten metal to a moving mold comprising a chilling block having a length in the x-direction, a width in the y-direction and a thickness in the z-direction, said moving mold further comprising multiple means for measuring temperature disposed in different positions in the x-direction, y-direction and z-direction relative to said block;
- (b) extracting heat from molten metal to obtain a solidified cast;
- (c) cooling said moving mold by contacting said moving mold with cooling fluid to extract heat from said moving mold; and
- (d) controlling the cooling of said moving mold in the x-direction, y-direction and z-direction by receiving temperature measurement data from said means for measuring temperature and sending said data to a means for controlling cooling of said block.
- 14. The method as claimed in claim 13, wherein said means for measuring temperature comprise temperature sensors in fixed locations relative to said caster.
- 15. The method as claimed in claim 13, wherein said means for measuring temperature are in fixed locations underneath said block.
- 16. The method as claimed in claim 13, wherein said means for measuring temperature are in movable positions throughout the caster.
