Claims
- 1. A remotely controlled locator material dispensing apparatus for use within a conduit having an axis to mark specific conduit locations for later identification, said locator material dispensing apparatus comprising:
- control means located outside of the conduit for generating a plurality of control signals for controlling the operation of the locator material dispensing apparatus;
- a first structural unit including a source of locator material to be dispensed onto an interior surface of said conduit, said first structural unit being connected to said control means for receiving the control signals therefrom, and for dispensing the locator material from said first structural unit onto the interior surface of said conduit in accordance with the received control signals;
- said first structural unit comprises:
- a housing including a locator material storage chamber for storing locator material to be dispensed; and
- locator material distributing means positioned on said housing and in fluid communication with said storage chamber for dispensing and distributing said locator material in accordance with the received control signals.
- 2. A remotely controlled locator material dispensing apparatus for use within a conduit having an axis to mark specific conduit locations for later identification, said locator material dispensing apparatus comprising:
- control means located outside of the conduit for generating a plurality of control signals for controlling the operation of the locator material dispensing apparatus; and
- a first structural unit including a source of locator material to be dispensed onto an interior surface of said conduit, said first structural unit being connected to said control means for receiving the control signals therefrom, and for dispensing the locator material from said first structural unit onto the interior surface of said conduit in accordance with the received control signals, said first structural unit comprising:
- a housing including a locator material storage chamber for storing locator material to be dispensed and a gas chamber for storing a gas to be dispensed at a predetermined pressure;
- valve means in fluid communication with said gas chamber and connected with the control means for receiving said pressurized gas from the gas chamber and the control signals from the control means and for distributing the received pressurized gas in accordance with the received control signals;
- locator material dispensing means positioned on said housing for receiving and dispensing said locator material and pressurized gas, said locator material dispensing means being in fluid communication with said valve means for receiving said pressurized gas therefrom, said locator material dispensing means also being in fluid communication with said locator material storage chamber such that when said pressurized gas is received and dispensed by said locator material dispensing means, locator material is drawn from the locator material storage chamber into said locator material dispensing means and dispensed with said pressurized gas.
- 3. The apparatus as recited in claim 2, further including video means coupled to said housing such that said video means moves with said housing when said housing moves within the conduit and for remotely monitoring said locator material dispensing means and the interior surface of said conduit.
- 4. The apparatus as recited in claim 1, further including monitoring means coupled to said first structural unit such that said monitoring means moves with said first structural unit when said first structural unit moves within the conduit and for remotely monitoring said first structural unit and the interior surface of said conduit.
- 5. The apparatus as recited in claim 1, wherein said locator material is a magnetic material, a material activated by light, a material activated by ultraviolet light, a material activated by infrared light, a material activated by radioactive waves, a material emitting radioactive waves, a material activated by sonic waves or a material activated by ultrasonic waves.
- 6. A remotely controlled locator material dispensing apparatus for use within a conduit having an axis to mark specific conduit locations for later identification, said locator material dispensing apparatus comprising:
- control means located outside of the conduit for generating a plurality of control signals for controlling the operation of the locator material dispensing apparatus;
- four structural units located within the conduit and sequentially coupled together end to end for concurrent movement within the conduit;
- a first of said structural units including a source of locator material to be dispensed onto an interior surface of said conduit for later identification, said first structural unit being connected to said control means for receiving the control signals therefrom, and for dispensing the locator material from said first structural unit onto the interior surface of the conduit in accordance with the received control signals;
- a second of said structural units including a source of pressurized hydraulic fluid;
- a third of said structural units including valve means in fluid communication with the fluid source and connected with the control means for receiving pressurized hydraulic fluid from the fluid source and the control signals from the control means and for distributing the received hydraulic fluid in accordance with the received control signals;
- the fourth of said structural units comprising support means for supporting a dispensing head and hydraulically actuated means in fluid communication with said third structural unit valve means for moving and positioning said support means with respect to said fourth structural unit; and
- a locator material dispensing head supported by said support means on said fourth structural unit, the locator material dispensing head including at least one outlet port in fluid communication with said source of locator material for receiving said dispensed locator material therethrough, whereby the position of said locator material dispensing head and the locator material flowing therethrough is controlled by said control means.
- 7. The apparatus as recited in claim 6, wherein said support means comprises a dispensing head supporting subassembly, a holder subassembly and a dispensing head positioning subassembly, and said hydraulically actuated means comprises:
- first hydraulically actuated means within the holder subassembly and in fluid communication with the valve means for receiving hydraulic fluid from the valve means for axially centering the fourth structural unit within the conduit, and for holding the fourth structural unit at a fixed axial position within the conduit as long as the received hydraulic fluid exceeds a predetermined minimum pressure;
- second hydraulically actuated means within the dispensing head positioning subassembly and in fluid communication with the valve means for receiving hydraulic fluid from the valve means for varying the axial position of the locator material dispensing head with respect to the fourth structural unit in accordance with the received hydraulic fluid;
- third hydraulically actuated means within the dispensing head positioning subassembly and in fluid communication with the valve means for receiving hydraulic fluid from the valve means for varying the radial position of the dispensing head with respect to the fourth structural unit in accordance with the received hydraulic fluid; and
- fourth hydraulically actuated means within the dispensing head positioning subassembly and in fluid communication with the valve means for receiving hydraulic fluid from the valve means for rotating the locator material dispensing head up to 180.degree. about the axis of the conduit in either a clockwise or counter clockwise direction with respect to an initial position in accordance with the received hydraulic fluid, the first, second, third and fourth hydraulically actuated means cooperating to position the locator material dispensing head in accordance with the control signals to facilitate the dispensing of the locator material.
- 8. The apparatus as recited in claim 7, wherein hydraulically actuated means further comprises a fifth hydraulically actuated means within the dispensing head supporting subassembly and in fluid communication with the valve means for receiving hydraulic fluid from the valve means for pivoting the dispensing head about the axis extending generally perpendicular to the axis of the conduit, the fifth hydraulically actuated means being cooperable with said first, second, third and fourth hydraulically actuated means to position the locator material dispensing head in accordance with the control signals to facilitate the dispensing of the locator material.
- 9. The apparatus as recited in claim 6, wherein said first structural unit includes a housing having a locator material storage chamber for storing said source of locator material to be dispensed and a gas chamber for storing a gas at a predetermined pressure; and
- second valve means in fluid communication with said gas chamber and connected with said control means for receiving said pressurized gas and the control signals from said control means and for distributing the received pressurized gas in accordance with the received control signals.
- 10. The apparatus as recited in claim 9, wherein said locator material dispensing head outlet port is in fluid communication with said second valve means for receiving said pressurized gas therefrom and said source of locator material in said locator material storage chamber whereby when said pressurized gas is received by said outlet port from said valve means, said locator material is drawn from said locator material storage chamber into said outlet port and dispensed onto said internal area of said conduit.
- 11. The apparatus as recited in claim 6, further including a fifth structural unit coupled to said fourth structural unit for concurrent movement within the conduit, said fifth structural unit including video means for remotely monitoring said fourth structural unit and an interior surface of said conduit.
- 12. The apparatus as recited in claim 6, wherein said locator material is a magnetic material, a material activated by light, a material activated by ultraviolet light, a material activated by infrared light, a material activated by radioactive waves, a material emitting radioactive waves, a material activated by sonic waves or a material activated by ultrasonic waves.
