Claims
- 1. The method of making a closure construction comprising placing together a flange member having an axially extending portion with an axially extending opening and a previously formed thread and a radially extending metal flange portion rigidly connected to said axially extending portion, and a metal container wall having a major wall portion and a previously formed minor offset wall portion including an axially extending wall portion that closely surrounds the outer periphery of the flange portion of said flange member and a radially extending wall portion having an opening that surrounds the axially extending opening of the flange member and that bears against the adjacent surface of said flange portion of said flange member, then applying to said flange portion transversely thereof and axially of said flange member at spaced locations around the outer periphery of said flange portion compressive forces sufficient to form depressions in the metal of said flange portion at the periphery of said flange portion at such locations and to force the metal of said flange portion at such locations radially outwardly to form generally radially extending protuberances while holding the radially extending portion of said offset portion of said container wall against said flange portion of said flange member and while constraining against outward radial movement said axially extending portion of said container wall at locations offset from said radially extending portion of said container wall and adjacent those at which said protuberances are formed, whereby the metal of the container wall is deformed while said protuberances are formed to firmly engage said protuberances and extend around and under said protuberances and clamp them against said radially extending portion of said container wall thereby to firmly secure said flange member in said container wall against any movement relative to said container wall.
- 2. The method of claim 1 in which said protuberances are formed to extend axially as well as radially of said flange portion of said flange member, and said metal of said container wall is constrained to closely engage said protuberances at said axial portion as well as said radial portions while said protuberances are being formed.
- 3. The method of claim 1 in which said flange member has a flange portion with an essentially circular periphery and said offset portion of said container wall has an essentially circular axial portion that is closely adjacent said periphery of said flange portion before the application of said transversely directed forces that cause said formation of said protuberances and said deformation of the container wall to engage such protuberances.
- 4. The method of claim 1 in which said transversely directed forces are applied to said flange portion of said flange member at essentially equally spaced locations around the periphery of said flange member to form protuberances that are essentially equally spaced.
- 5. The method of claim 1 in which said flange portion of said flange member is essentially flat before and during the application of said forces transversely directed forming said protuberances and in which during the formation of said protuberances there are essentially no radial forces applied to said flange member except forces caused by deformation of said offset portion of said container wall to closely engage said flange member at the vicinity of said protuberances.
- 6. Apparatus for making closure construction by securing a flange member having an axially extending portion with an axially extending opening and a previously formed thread and a radially extending metal flange portion rigidly connected to said axially extending portion, to a metal container wall having a major wall portion and a previously formed minor offset wall portion including an axially extending wall portion that closely surrounds the outer periphery of the flange portion of the flange member and a radially extending wall portion having an opening that surrounds the axially extending opening of the flange member and that bears against the adjacent surface of said flange member, said apparatus comprising means for applying to said flange portion transversely thereof and axially of said flange member at spaced locations around the outer periphery of said flange portion compressive forces sufficient to form depressions in the metal of the flange portion at the periphery of said flange portion at such locations and to force the metal of said flange portion at such locations radially outwardly to form generally radially extending protuberances, means for holding the radially extending portion of said offset portion of said container wall against said flange portion during the application of said transversely directed forces, and means for constraining outward radial movement of said axial portion of said container wall at locations offset from said radially extending portion of said container wall and adjacent those at which said protuberances are formed during application of said transversely directed forces, so that when said forces deform the metal of said flange portion to form said protuberances said protuberances during their formation deform the metal of said offset portion of said container wall so that it locks against said protuberances and thereby firmly secures said flange member in said container wall.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6 in which said last-mentioned means comprises a plurality of holding members that are adapted to move between radially outward positions in which they clear said offset portion of said container wall before and after the formation of said protuberances, and inward positions in which they engage said axially extending portion of said container wall to constrain it against outward radial movement, means for moving said holding members to said inward positions when they move axially toward and surround said axially extending portion of said container wall and for moving said holding members to their outward positions as said holding members are moved axially away from said flange member, and means for so axially moving said holding members.
