Claims
- 1. A one-piece sheet metal wheel disc having a central bolt-circle mounting portion for fastening onto a vehicle hub or the like, a peripheral outer annular flange portion extending generally axially of said wheel disc to an inboard free edge of said disc and adapted for telescopic mounting into a mating wheel rim, and an annular window vent and hat intermediate portion integrally joining said central and flange portions, said disc flange portion having an annular rim-mounting portion extending axially outboard of said disc from said inboard free edge of said disc flange portion to a given location spaced axially inboard of a radially outermost peripheral portion of said disc intermediate portion, said disc flange portion being initially progressively draw die cold formed to include a preform of said flange rim-mounting portion having an unfinished cross-sectional contour corresponding in shape generally to but slightly diametrically smaller than said disc flange rim-mounting portion, and then said rim mounting portion is finish formed in a cold working sizing operation wherein said preform rim mounting portion of said flange is radially expanded to circumferentially stretch the same beyond the yield point of the blank metal sufficiently to cause said preform flange rim-mounting portion to take a permanent set into the final predetermined expanded and finished shape of said rim-mounting portion of said disc flange adapted for precision telescopic mounting of the same into a mating wheel rim, said predetermined expanded and finished shape of said disc rim mounting portion being characterized by having a predetermined circumferentially stretched cylindrical or slightly inboard divergent frusto-conical shape in radial cross section substantially free of waviness and undulations circumferentially of the radially inward and outer peripheral surfaces of said rim mounting portion, and having a substantially uniform outside diameter at any given selected measurement points taken at spaced locations axially of the disc along said outer peripheral surface of said rim mounting portion within substantially reduced tolerance limits as compared to the corresponding dimensions of said disc flange preform rim mounting portion.
- 2. The wheel disc set forth in claim 1 wherein said disc central portion further has a circle of wheel-mounting chamfered bolt holes, a center wheel mounting pilot opening and wheel mounting pads defining a mounting plane on the inboard side of said disc, and said disc intermediate portion has a circular row of window vent openings; all of said holes, openings and pads being made in finished form by progressive die forming concurrently with the progressive die forming of said die-flange preform.
- 3. The wheel disc set forth in claim 1 wherein said radially expanded flange rim-mounting portion comprises a circumferentially continuous portion of said disc flange extending axially outboard of the disc from the free edge of said flange to thereby provide a finished full flange rim-mounting portion having an uninterrupted 360.degree. inboard edge circumferentially of said disc.
- 4. The wheel disc set forth in claim 3 wherein said disc further has an expansion-formed annular shoulder junction between the disc-outboard edge of said rim-mounting portion and a radially outermost peripheral portion of said disc intermediate portion.
- 5. The wheel disc set forth in claim 1 wherein said disc flange has circumferentially alternating and equally angularly spaced scalloped and spoke portions which-thereby define an interrupted inboard free edge of the disc, and wherein said radially expanded rim-mounting portion comprises at least the zone of said disc flange in the portion thereof extending in an outboard direction from the inboard free edge of said disc flange to at least beyond the outboardmost edge of said scallops such that said disc has a scalloped-type finished rim-mounting flange portion.
- 6. The wheel disc set forth in claim 5 wherein said disc further has an expansion-formed annular shoulder junction between the disc-outboard edge of said rim-mounting portion and a radially outermost peripheral portion of said disc intermediate portion.
- 7. A wheel disc set forth in claims 1, 2, 3, 5, 4 or 6 and further including in combination therewith a one-piece drop-center-well wheel rim having dual tire bead seating surfaces and associated dual tire bead retaining flanges and a radially inwardly facing circumferentially extending disc-mounting surface, said disc being press-fit assembled into said rim by telescopic engagement of said disc flange rim-mounting outer peripheral surface with said rim disc-mounting surface and being permanently affixed to said rim to thereby provide a wheel disc and rim assembly.
- 8. A one-piece sheet metal wheel disc having a central bolt-circle mounting portion for fastening onto a vehicle hub or the like, a peripheral outer annular flange portion extending generally axially of said wheel disc to an inboard free edge of said disc and adapted for telescopic mounting into a mating wheel rim, and an annular window vent and hat intermediate portion integrally joining said central and flange portions, said disc flange portion having a rim-mounting portion initially progressively die cold formed into a preform of said flange rim-mounting portion having an unfinished cross-sectional contour corresponding in shape generally to but slightly diametrically smaller than said disc flange rim-mounting portion, and then finish formed in a cold working sizing operation wherein said preform flange is radially expanded to circumferentially stretch the same beyond the yield point of the blank metal sufficiently to cause said preform flange to take a permanent set into the final predetermined expanded and finished shape of said rim-mounting portion of said disc flange adapted for precision telescopic mounting of the same into a mating wheel rim, and wherein said radially expanded flange rim-mounting portion comprises a circumferentially continuous portion of said disc flange extending axially outboard of the disc from the free edge of said flange to thereby provide a finished full flange rim-mounting portion having an uninterrupted 360.degree. inboard edge circumferentially of said disc.
- 9. The wheel disc set forth in claim 8 wherein said disc further has an expansion-formed annular shoulder junction between the disc-outboard edge of said rim-mounting portion and a radially outermost peripheral portion of said disc intermediate portion.
- 10. A one-piece sheet metal wheel disc having a central bolt-circle mounting portion for fastening onto a vehicle hub or the like, a peripheral outer annular flange portion extending generally axially of said wheel disc to an inboard free edge of said disc and adapted for telescopic mounting into a mating wheel rim, and an annular window vent and hat intermediate portion integrally joining said central and flange portions, said disc flange portion having a rim-mounting portion initially progressively die cold formed into a preform of said flange rim-mounting portion having an unfinished cross-sectional contour corresponding in shape generally to but slightly diametrically smaller than said disc flange rim-mounting portion, and then finish formed in a cold working sizing operation wherein said preform flange is radially expanded to circumferentially stretch the same beyond the yield point of the blank metal sufficiently to cause said preform flange to take a permanent set into the final predetermined expanded and finished shape of said rim-mounting portion of said disc flange adapted for precision telescopic mounting of the same into a mating wheel rim, wherein said disc flange has circumferentially alternating and equally angularly spaced scalloped and spoke portions which thereby define an interrupted inboard free edge of the disc, and wherein said radially expanded rim-mounting portion comprises at least the zone of said disc flange in the portion thereof extending in an outboard direction from the inboard free edge of said disc flange to at least beyond the outboardmost edge of said scallops such that said disc has a scalloped-type finished rim-mounting flange portion, and wherein said disc further has an expansion-formed annular shoulder junction between the disc-outboard edge of said rim-mounting portion and a radially outermost peripheral portion of said disc intermediate portion.
- 11. A one-piece sheet metal wheel disc having a central bolt-circle mounting portion for fastening onto a vehicle hub or the like, a peripheral outer annular flange portion extending generally axially of said wheel disc to an inboard free edge of said disc and adapted for telescopic mounting into a mating wheel rim, and an annular window vent and hat intermediate portion integrally joining said central and flange portions, said disc flange portion having a rim-mounting portion initially progressively die cold formed into a preform of said flange rim-mounting portion having an unfinished cross-sectional contour corresponding in shape generally to but slightly diametrically smaller than said disc flange rim-mounting portion, and then finish formed in a cold working sizing operation wherein said preform flange is radially expanded to circumferentially stretch the same beyond the yield point of the blank metal sufficiently to cause said preform flange to take a permanent set into the final predetermined expanded and finished shape of said rim-mounting portion of said disc flange adapted for precision telescopic mounting of the same into a mating wheel rim, wherein said radially expanded flange rim-mounting portion comprises a circumferentially continuous portion of said disc flange extending axially outboard of the disc from the free edge of said flange to thereby provide a finished full flange rim-mounting portion having an uninterrupted 360.degree. inboard edge circumferentially of said disc, and further including in combination therewith a one-piece drop-center-well wheel rim having dual tire bead seating surfaces and associated dual tire bead retaining flanges and a radially inwardly facing circumferentially extending discounting surface, said disc being press-fit assembled into said rim by telescopic engagement of said disc flange rim-mounting surface with said disc-mounting surface and being permanently affixed to said rim to thereby provide a wheel disc and rim assembly.
