Claims
- 1. A method of making an erectable display box of the type comprising a sheet of an opaque material such as paperboard having an opening with edges and extending through at least one corner of the erected box, and a sheet of rigid transparent plastic material extending across the opening, said method comprising the steps of cutting said opening out of a paperboard panel, providing a sheet of rigid plastics material which is larger than said opening, forming in said rigid plastics sheet, at least one notch having an inner end and sides, positioning the notched rigid plastics sheet across said opening of the paperboard panel so that the notch extends toward and at least to an edge of the opening, adhering the so positioned rigid plastics sheet to the panel, forming a fold line in the rigid plastics sheet along a line extending through the inner end of the notch, forming fold lines in the panel for erecting the panel to form a box, at least one of the fold lines of the panel being aligned with the fold line of the rigid plastics sheet, and cutting from the panel the paperboard sections to form with the rigid plastics sheet, an erectable box having a corner at the fold line of the rigid plastics sheet and the aligned fold line of the panel.
- 2. A method according to claim 1 wherein said steps of forming fold lines in the panel and in the sheet comprise mechanically forming said fold lines.
- 3. A method according to claim 1 wherein said steps of forming fold lines in said panel and said sheet are performed substantially simultaneously.
- 4. A method according to claim 1 wherein said steps of forming fold lines in said panel and said sheet and said step of cutting sections from the panel are performed substantially simultaneously.
- 5. A method according to claim 4 wherein said steps which are performed substantially simultaneously are performed by a combined fold line forming and cutting tool.
- 6. A method according to claim 1 wherein said step of adhering the plastics sheet to the panel comprises heat-welding the sheet to the panel.
- 7. A method according to claim 1 wherein said step of forming a fold line in the sheet comprises heating and reducing the thickness of the sheet along the fold line.
- 8. A method according to claim 1 wherein said step of forming a notch comprises forming two notches having inner ends and sides, said notches being spaced from each other and opening away from each other, said step of positioning the sheet on the panel comprises positioning the sheet with the notches extending toward and at least to the opposed edges of the panel openings, and said step of forming a fold line in the sheet comprises forming a fold line which extends through the inner ends of the notches.
- 9. A method according to claim 1 wherein said step of forming a fold line in the sheet comprises forming a fold line by grooving or scoring the sheet.
- 10. A method according to claim 1 wherein said step of forming fold lines in the panel comprises forming fold lines by grooving or scoring the panel.
- 11. Apparatus for making an erectable display box of the type comprising a sheet of opaque material such as paperboard having an opening with edges and extending through at least one corner of the erected box, and a sheet of rigid transparent plastic material extending across the opening, said apparatus comprising means for positioning a plastics sheet having aligned spaced apart notches opening away from each other, across an opening of a panel with the notches extending toward and at least to the edges of the opening and generally aligned with fold lines to be formed in the panel, means for pressing the sheet against the panel to adhere the sheet to the panel, and means for simultaneously forming a fold line in said sheet which extends through the inner ends of said notches, a fold line in said panel aligned with the fold line in the sheet, and additional fold lines in said panel to permit the panel and sheet to be erected to form a display box.
- 12. Apparatus according to claim 11 wherein said means for forming the fold line in the sheet and said means for forming the fold lines in the panel are mounted on a common support.
- 13. Apparatus according to claim 12 wherein said means for pressing the sheet against the panel is mounted on said common support.
- 14. Apparatus according to claim 13 wherein said common support is a reciprocable plate.
- 15. A method of making an erectable display box of the type comprising a first sheet of opaque material and a second sheet of rigid transparent plastic material, said method comprising the steps of providing a first sheet of opaque material; providing a second sheet of rigid transparent plastic material; forming a notch at the edge of one of said first and second sheets, said notch having an inner end; positioning said one of said first and second sheets so that its edge overlaps an edge of the other of said first and second sheets and so that said inner end of said notch extends at least to said edge of said other of said sheets; adhering the so positioned second sheet to said first sheet; forming a first fold line in said one of said first and second sheets aligned with said notch; and forming a second fold line in said other of said first and second sheets aligned with said first fold line, so that said notch limits unwanted deformation of the sheets upon bending about said aligned fold line.
- 16. A method according to claim 15 wherein said notch forming step consists of forming said notch in said second sheet.
- 17. A method according to claim 15 further comprising the step of cutting said first sheet from a larger sheet.
- 18. A method according to claim 15 further comprising the step of cutting an opening in said first sheet prior to said positioning step.
- 19. A method according to claim 18 wherein said second sheet is larger than said opening and wherein said positioning step includes locating said second sheet to cover said opening.
- 20. A method according to claim 15 wherein said steps of forming fold lines in said first and second sheets are performed substantially simultaneously.
- 21. A method according to claim 20 further comprising the step of cutting said first sheet from a larger sheet.
- 22. A method according to claim 21 wherein said steps of forming fold lines in said first and second sheets and said cutting step are performed substantially simultaneously.
- 23. A method according to claim 22 wherein said steps which are performed substantially simultaneously are performed by a combined fold line forming and cutting tool.
- 24. A method according to claim 15 wherein said adhering step comprises heat-welding said second sheet to said first sheet.
- 25. A method according to claim 15 wherein said step of forming a fold line in the sheet comprises heating and reducing the thickness of the sheet along the fold lines.
- 26. A method according to claim 15 wherein said notch forming step and said adhering step are performed substantially simultaneously.
- 27. A method according to claim 15 wherein said adhering step comprises heat welding said second sheet to said first sheet and wherein said notch forming step and said heat welding are performed substantially simultaneously.
- 28. A method according to claim 15 wherein said notch forming step is performed prior to said positioning step.
- 29. A method according to claim 15 wherein said step of forming a fold line in said second sheet comprises forming a fold line by grooving or scoring said sheet.
- 30. A method according to claim 15 wherein said step of forming a fold line in said first sheet comprises forming fold lines by grooving or scoring said sheet.
- 31. A method of making an erectable display box of the type comprising a first sheet of opaque material and a second sheet of rigid transparent plastic material, said method comprising the steps of providing a first sheet of opaque material; providing a second sheet of rigid transparent plastic material; forming a first fold line in one of said first and second sheets having a notch at one end thereof disposed at the edge of said one of said first and second sheets, said notch having an inner end; positioning said one of said first and second sheets so that its edge overlaps an edge of the other of said first and second sheets and so that said inner end of said notch extends at least to said edge of said other of said sheets; adhering the so positioned second sheet to said first sheet; and forming a second fold line in said other of said first and second sheets aligned with said first fold line and said notch so that said notch limits unwanted deformation of the sheets upon bending about said aligned fold lines.
- 32. A method according to claim 31 wherein said notch forming step consists of forming said notch in said second sheet.
- 33. A method according to claim 31 further comprising the step of cutting said first sheet from a larger sheet.
- 34. A method according to claim 31 further comprising the step of cutting an opening in said first sheet prior to said positioning step.
- 35. A method according to claim 34 wherein said second sheet is larger than said opening and wherein said positioning step includes locating said second sheet to cover said opening.
- 36. A method according to claim 31 wherein said adhering step comprises heat-welding said second sheet to said first sheet.
- 37. A method according to claim 31 wherein said step of forming a fold line in the sheet comprises heating and reducing the thickness of the sheet along the fold line.
- 38. A method according to claim 31 wherein said step of forming a fold line in said second sheet comprises forming a fold line by grooving or scoring said sheet.
- 39. A method according to claim 31 wherein said step of forming a fold line in said first sheet comprises forming fold lines by grooving or scoring said sheet.
- 40. A method of making an erectable display box of the type comprising a first sheet of opaque material and a second sheet of rigid transparent plastic material, said method comprising the steps of providing a first sheet of opaque material; providing a second sheet of rigid transparent plastic material; forming a first fold line in one of said first and second sheets having a notch at one end thereof disposed at the edge of said one of said first and second sheets, said notch having an inner end; forming a second fold line in the other of said first and second sheets; positioning said one of said first and second sheets so that its edge overlaps an edge of the other of said first and second sheets and so that said inner end of said notch extends at least to said edge of said other of said sheets and said first and second fold lines are aligned with each other; and adhering the so positioned second sheet to said first sheet so that said notch limits unwanted deformation of the sheets upon bending about said aligned fold lines.
- 41. A method according to claim 40 wherein said notch forming step consists of forming said notch in said second sheet.
- 42. A method according to claim 40 further comprising the step of cutting said first sheet from a larger sheet.
- 43. A method according to claim 40 further comprising the step of cutting an opening in said first sheet prior to said positioning step.
- 44. A method according to claim 43 wherein said second sheet is larger than said opening and wherein said positioning step includes locating said second sheet to cover said opening.
- 45. A method according to claim 40 wherein said adhering step comprises heat-welding said second sheet to said first sheet.
- 46. A method according to claim 40 wherein said step of forming a fold line in the sheet comprises heating and reducing the thickness of the sheet along the fold line.
- 47. Apparatus for making an erectable display box of the type comprising a first sheet of opaque material and a second sheet of rigid transparent material, said apparatus comprising: means for positioning a first sheet of opaque material and a second sheet of rigid transparent material, one of which has a notch formed at an edge thereof, said notch having an inner end, so that said edge with said notch overlaps an edge of the other of said first and second sheets and extends at least to said edge of said other sheet; means for pressing said second sheet against said first sheet to adhere said sheets to each other; and means for simultaneously forming a fold line in said one of said first and second sheets which extends through said notch and forming a fold line through the other of said first and second sheets, with said fold lines being aligned with each other so that said notch limits unwanted deformation of the sheets upon bending about said aligned fold lines.
- 48. An apparatus according to claim 47 further comprising means for cutting said first sheet from a larger sheet.
- 49. An apparatus according to claim 47 wherein said means for forming a fold line in said first sheet and said means for forming a fold line in said second sheet are mounted on a common support.
- 50. An apparatus according to claim 49 wherein said pressing means is mounted on said common support.
- 51. An apparatus according to claim 49 or claim 50 further comprising means for cutting said first sheet from a larger sheet.
- 52. An apparatus according to claim 51 wherein said cutting means is mounted on said common support.
