Claims
- 1. For use in the manufacture of a color cathode ray tube having a shadow mask with a central pattern of apertures mounted in tension on a transparent flat front panel with the mask aperture pattern in registration with a cathodoluminescent screen pattern of corresponding geometry and position on an inner surface of the panel, wherein the shadow masks and front panels are respectively interchangeable, the method steps, not necessarily int he stated order, comprising:
- developing signals indicative of the positions of a mechanically stretched mask aperture pattern and an associated front panel screen pattern relative to a reference or to each other; and
- responsive to said signals, effecting a relative positioning of said mask and screen until registration between said patterns is achieved.
- 2. The method defined by claim 1 including adjusting the stretching of said mask to assist in achieving said registration.
- 3. For use in the manufacture of a color cathode ray tube having a shadow mask with a central pattern of apertures mounted in tension on a transparent flat front panel with the mask aperture pattern in registration with a cathodoluminescent screen pattern of corresponding geometry and position on an inner surface of the panel, wherein the shadow masks and front panels are respectively interchangeable, the method comprising:
- stretching and positioning a mask such that its aperture pattern conforms to a predetermined interchangeable mask standard;
- positioning a screen to a corresponding standard to register said mask and screen patterns, said screen having been fabricated, not using said mask, but having been fabricated using a master mask whose pattern geometry corresponds to said predetermined interchangeable mask standard; and
- permanently securing said mask in thus-registered spaced adjacency to said screen.
- 4. For use in the manufacture of a color cathode ray tube having a shadow mask with a central pattern of apertures mounted in tension on a transparent flat front panel with the mask aperture pattern in registration with a cathodoluminescent screen pattern of corresponding geometry and position on an inner surface of the panel, wherein the shadow masks and front panels are respectively interchangeable, the method comprising:
- supporting and positioning a front panel;
- tensioning and positioning a foil mask adjacent to said front panel; and
- accurately registering the aperture pattern of said mask and the screen pattern of said panel, comprising:
- generating and directing a radiant beam through said mask and said screen,
- responsive to said radiant beam after said passage through said mask and screen, detecting misalignment of said patterns and developing an error signal containing information indicative of errors in position registry between said mask and screen pattern, and
- using a feedback loop responsive to said error signal, effecting relative movement between said mask and said screen to minimize said errors to optimize the registry of said screen and mask patterns.
- 5. For use in the manufacture of a color cathode ray tube having a shadow mask with a central pattern of apertures mounted in tension on a transparent flat front panel, with the mask aperture pattern in registration with the apertures of a grille pattern of corresponding geometry and positioned on the inner surface of the panel, and wherein the shadow masks and front panels are respectively interchangeable, a process comprising:
- providing a faceplate having on its inner surface a predetermined pattern of grille holes;
- providing a screen inspection fixture having three adjustable faceplate stops, and installing said faceplate therein;
- projecting a light source through said faceplate and said grille holes to develop patterns corresponding to the grille configuration in a small selected region;
- viewing said patterns with a video-camera-equipped microscope for developing signals indicative of the x and y coordinates of the centers of said grille holes; and
- adjusting the stops of said screen inspection fixture so that said x and y coordinates of the centers of said grille holes conform to a predetermined standard.
- 6. For use in the manufacture of a color cathode ray tube having a shadow mask with a central pattern of apertures mounted in tension on a transparent flat front panel with the mask aperture pattern in registration with a cathodoluminescent screen pattern of corresponding geometry and position on an inner surface of the panel, wherein the shadow masks and front panels are respectively interchangeable, the apparatus comprising:
- means for developing signals indicative of the positions of a mechanically stretched mask aperture pattern and an associated front panel screen pattern relative to a reference or to each other; and
- means responsive to said signals for effecting a relative positioning of said mask and screen until registration between said patterns is achieved.
- 7. The apparatus defined by claim 6 including means for adjusting the stretching of said mask to assist in achieving said registration.
- 8. For use in the manufacture of a color cathode ray tube having a shadow mask with a central pattern of apertures mounted in tension on a transparent flat front panel with the mask aperture pattern in registration with a cathodoluminescent screen pattern of corresponding geometry and position on an inner surface of the panel, wherein the shadow masks and front panels are respectively interchangeable, the apparatus comprising:
- means for stretching and positioning a mask independently of screen fabrication such that its aperture pattern conforms to a predetermined interchangeable mask standard;
- means for positioning a screen to the same standard to register said mask and screen patterns; and
- means for permanently securing said mask in thus-registered spaced adjacency to said screen.
- 9. For use in the manufacture of a color cathode ray tube having a shadow mask with a central pattern of apertures mounted in tension on a transparent flat front panel with the mask aperture pattern in registration with a cathodoluminescent screen pattern of corresponding geometry and position on an inner surface of the panel, wherein the shadow masks and front panels are respectively interchangeable, apparatus for measuring the position or geometry of a mask aperture pattern, comprising:
- tensioning means for tensing said mask;
- a foil shadow mask mounted in said tensing means having a mask aperture pattern with a pattern area predesignated for inspection; and
- means for inspecting said predetermined mask pattern while said mask is being tensed by said tensing means for developing error data containing information indicative of errors in position or geometry of said mask aperture pattern with respect to a screen pattern position or geometry.
- 10. The apparatus defined by claim 9 wherein said predesignated pattern area is a special area located outside of the normal viewed area of said cathode ray tube which is set aside to facilitate said inspection.
- 11. The apparatus defined in claim 10 wherein said means for inspecting comprises a microscope and associated television camera.
- 12. For use in the manufacture of a color cathode ray tube having a shadow mask with a central pattern of apertures mounted in tension on a transparent flat front panel with the mask aperture pattern in registration with a cathodoluminescent screen pattern of corresponding geometry and position on an inner surface of the panel, wherein the shadow masks and front panels are respectively interchangeable, the apparatus comprising:
- means for supporting and positioning a front panel;
- means for tensing and positioning a foil mask adjacent to said front panel; and
- apparatus for accurately registering the aperture pattern of said mask and the screen pattern of said panel, comprising:
- optical means for generating and directing a radiant beam through said mask and said screen,
- detecting means responsive to said optical means after said passage through said mask and screen, for detecting misalignment of said patterns and developing an error signal containing information indicative of errors in position registry between said mask and screen pattern; and
- including a feedback loop means responsive to said error signal for effecting said tensing and positioning to minimize said errors so as to optimize the registry of said screen and mask patterns.
- 13. The apparatus defined by claim 12 wherein said optical means comprises a microscope and associated television camera.
- 14. The apparatus defined by claim 12 wherein said front panel and mask have respective pattern areas outside the normal viewed area of the cathode ray tube through which said radiant beam is passed.
