Claims
- 1. A system for managing electronic receipts, comprising:
a portable device configured to store a plurality of electronic receipts corresponding to a plurality of transactions and allow one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts to be retrieved; and a base device configured to store one or more policies relating to generation and management of electronic receipts and generate an electronic receipt for a corresponding transaction using at least one of the one or more policies and forward the generated electronic receipt to the portable device for storage; wherein which one of the one or more policies is used for generating the electronic receipt depends on the corresponding transaction.
- 2. The system of claim 1 further comprising:
a user device configured to communicate with the portable device to allow a user to manage the plurality of electronic receipts stored on the portable device.
- 3. The system of claim 2 further comprising:
a management server configured to communicate with the user device and retrieve information relating to one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on the portable device.
- 4. The system of claim 3 wherein the management server interacts with one or more applications and communicates the retrieved information from the portable device to the one or more applications.
- 5. The system of claim 3 further comprising:
an administration system configured to provide at least one of the one or more policies; wherein the management server cooperates with the administration system to restore one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts.
- 6. The system of claim 2 wherein the user device and the portable device cooperate with each other in an off-line manner to allow the user to manage the plurality of electronic receipts.
- 7. The system of claim 2 wherein information relating to one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts is stored in the user device; and
wherein the information relating to one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts is exported to one or more applications residing either within or without the user device.
- 8. The system of claim 1 further comprising:
an administration system configured to communicate with the base device and provide at least one of the one or more policies to the base device to allow the base device to generate electronic receipts accordingly.
- 9. The system of claim 8 wherein the administration system periodically updates at least one of the one or more policies and forwards one or more updated policies to the base device.
- 10. The system of claim 8 wherein the base device is further configured to store a copy of the electronic receipt generated by the base device in a local receipt storage.
- 11. The system of claim 10 wherein contents of the local receipt storage are periodically uploaded to the administration system.
- 12. The system of claim 10 wherein the user is able to use the base device to restore an electronic receipt on the portable device by using contents of the local receipt storage.
- 13. The system of claim 10 wherein contents of the local receipt storage are exported to one or more applications residing either within or without the base device.
- 14. The system of claim 8 wherein the base device is further configured to store historical activity information relating to the electronic receipt generated by the base device in a local receipt activity log.
- 15. The system of claim 14 wherein contents of the local receipt activity log are periodically uploaded to the administration system.
- 16. The system of claim 8 wherein the administration system is further configured to collect information from the base device.
- 17. The system of claim 16 wherein the information collected from the base device by the administration system is used for reporting purposes.
- 18. The system of claim 16 wherein the information collected from the base device by the administration system is used for fraud control.
- 19. The system of claim 16 wherein the information collected from the base device by the administration system is used for base device management.
- 20. The system of claim 8 wherein the administration system is further configured to generate and manage keys and security attributes to allow the base device to generate a secure electronic receipt.
- 21. The system of claim 1 wherein the portable device includes user information relating to the user of the portable device; and
wherein when the user wishes to conduct a transaction, the user information is forwarded by the portable device to the base device and used by the base device to generate a corresponding electronic receipt for the transaction.
- 22. The system of claim 1 wherein the portable device includes at least one of a smart card, a personal digital assistant, a cellular phone, a pager, a memory stick, a secure digital card, a dongle and a payment card.
- 23. The system of claim 1 wherein one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on the portable device are protected from unauthorized access.
- 24. The system of claim 1 wherein one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on the portable device each has one or more associated access conditions.
- 25. The system of claim 1 wherein the one or more policies correspond to one or more service providers.
- 26. The system of claim 1 wherein the base device is assigned a unique identifier.
- 27. The system of claim 26 wherein information relating to the unique identifier is incorporated into the electronic receipt generated by the base device.
- 28. The system of claim 1 wherein the base device uses information from the portable device and a service provider environment to generate the electronic receipt.
- 29. The system of claim 28 wherein the service provider environment includes one or more peripheral devices including an electronic cash register.
- 30. The system of claim 1 wherein the base device is further configured to delete an electronic receipt from the portable device if the electronic receipt has become invalid or has been confirmed for deletion.
- 31. The system of claim 1 wherein the base device includes at least one of a point of sales device, an ATM, a kiosk, a personal computer and a telephone including a cellular phone.
- 32. The system of claim 2 wherein the user device is further configured to allow the user to display one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on the portable device.
- 33. The system of claim 3 wherein the user device communicates with the management server via an open network.
- 34. The system of claim 2 wherein the user is able to exchange information between the user device and the portable device.
- 35. The system of claim 2 wherein the user is able to delete one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on the portable device using the user device.
- 36. The system of claim 2 wherein the user is able to transfer one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on the portable device onto the user device.
- 37. The system of claim 36 wherein the user is further able to delete the one or more transferred electronic receipts from the user device.
- 38. The system of claim 36 wherein the user is further able to download the previously transferred one or more electronic receipts from the user device to the portable device.
- 39. The system of claim 36 wherein the user is able to store a duplicate copy of one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on the portable device onto the user device.
- 40. The system of claim 1 wherein the electronic receipt stored on the portable device allows a user to redeem a service or merchandise; and
wherein upon the user requesting redemption of the service or merchandise, the base device retrieves the electronic receipt from the portable device and directs the electronic receipt to be deleted from the portable device.
- 41. The system of claim 1 wherein at least one of the plurality of electronic receipts is tamper-proof.
- 42. The system of claim 1 wherein at least one of the plurality of electronic receipts includes a validity period.
- 43. The system of claim 1 wherein at least one of the plurality of electronic receipts includes receipt status information.
- 44. The system of claim 1 wherein at least one of the plurality of electronic receipts includes transaction identifying information.
- 45. A system for managing electronic receipts, comprising:
a portable device configured to store a plurality of electronic receipts corresponding to a plurality of transactions and allow one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts to be retrieved; a base device configured to generate an electronic receipt for a corresponding transaction and forward the generated electronic receipt to the portable device for storage; a user device configured to communicate with the portable device to allow a user to manage the plurality of electronic receipts stored on the portable device; a management server configured to communicate with the user device and retrieve information relating to one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on the portable device; and an administration system configured to communicate with the base device and provide one or more policies relating to generation and management of electronic receipts to the base device to allow the base device to generate electronic receipts accordingly.
- 46. The system of claim 45 wherein the portable device includes user information relating to the user of the portable device; and
wherein when the user wishes to conduct a transaction, the user information is forwarded by the portable device to the base device and used by the base device to generate a corresponding electronic receipt for the transaction.
- 47. The system of claim 45 wherein the portable device includes at least one of a smart card, a personal digital assistant, a cellular phone, a pager, a memory stick, a secure digital card, a dongle and a payment card.
- 48. The system of claim 45 wherein one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on the portable device are protected from unauthorized access.
- 49. The system of claim 45 wherein one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on the portable device each has one or more associated access conditions.
- 50. The system of claim 45 wherein the base device is further configured to store copies of the one or more policies relating to generation and management of electronic receipts provided by the administration system.
- 51. The system of claim 45 wherein the one or more policies relating to generation and management of electronic receipts correspond to one or more service providers.
- 52. The system of claim 45 wherein the administration system periodically updates the one or more policies relating to generation and management of electronic receipts and forwards one or more updated policies to the base device.
- 53. The system of claim 45 wherein the base device is further configured to store a copy of the electronic receipt generated by the base device in a local receipt storage.
- 54. The system of claim 53 wherein contents of the local receipt storage are periodically uploaded to the administration system.
- 55. The system of claim 53 wherein the user is able to use the base device to restore an electronic receipt on the portable device by using contents of the local receipt storage.
- 56. The system of claim 53 wherein contents of the local receipt storage are exported to one or more applications residing either within or without the base device.
- 57. The system of claim 45 wherein the base device is further configured to store historical activity information relating to the electronic receipt generated by the base device in a local receipt activity log.
- 58. The system of claim 57 wherein contents of the local receipt activity log are periodically uploaded to the administration system.
- 59. The system of claim 45 wherein the base device is assigned a unique identifier.
- 60. The system of claim 59 wherein information relating to the unique identifier is incorporated into the electronic receipt generated by the base device.
- 61. The system of claim 45 wherein the base device uses information from the portable device and a service provider environment to generate the electronic receipt.
- 62. The system of claim 61 wherein the service provider environment includes one or more peripheral devices including an electronic cash register.
- 63. The system of claim 45 wherein the base device is further configured to delete an electronic receipt from the portable device if the electronic receipt has become invalid or has been confirmed for deletion.
- 64. The system of claim 45 wherein the base device includes at least one of a point of sales device, an ATM, a kiosk, a personal computer and a telephone including a cellular phone.
- 65. The system of claim 45 wherein the user device is further configured to allow the user to display one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on the portable device.
- 66. The system of claim 45 wherein the user device communicates with the management server via an open network.
- 67. The system of claim 45 wherein the user is able to exchange information between the user device and the portable device.
- 68. The system of claim 45 wherein the user is able to delete one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on the portable device using the user device.
- 69. The system of claim 45 wherein the user is able to transfer one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on the portable device onto the user device.
- 70. The system of claim 69 wherein the user is further able to delete the one or more transferred electronic receipts from the user device.
- 71. The system of claim 69 wherein the user is further able to download the previously transferred one or more electronic receipts from the user device to the portable device.
- 72. The system of claim 45 wherein the user is able to store a duplicate copy of one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on the portable device onto the user device.
- 73. The system of claim 45 wherein the management server interacts with one or more applications and communicates the retrieved information from the portable device to the one or more applications.
- 74. The system of claim 45 wherein the electronic receipt stored on the portable device allows a user to redeem a service or merchandise; and
wherein upon the user requesting redemption of the service or merchandise, the base device retrieves the electronic receipt from the portable device and directs the electronic receipt to be deleted from the portable device.
- 75. The system of claim 45 wherein the user device and the portable device cooperate with each other in an off-line manner to allow the user to manage the plurality of electronic receipts.
- 76. The system of claim 45 wherein information relating to one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts is stored in the user device; and
wherein the information relating to one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts is exported to one or more applications residing either within or without the user device.
- 77. The system of claim 45 wherein the management server cooperates with the administration system to restore one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts on the portable device.
- 78. The system of claim 45 wherein at least one of the plurality of electronic receipts is tamper-proof.
- 79. The system of claim 45 wherein at least one of the plurality of electronic receipts includes a validity period.
- 80. The system of claim 45 wherein at least one of the plurality of electronic receipts includes receipt status information.
- 81. The system of claim 45 wherein at least one of the plurality of electronic receipts includes transaction identifying information.
- 82. The system of claim 45 wherein the administration system is further configured to collect information from the base device.
- 83. The system of claim 82 wherein the information collected from the base device by the administration system is used for reporting purposes.
- 84. The system of claim 82 wherein the information collected from the base device by the administration system is used for fraud control.
- 85. The system of claim 82 wherein the information collected from the base device by the administration system is used for base device management.
- 86. The system of claim 45 wherein the administration system is further configured to generate and manage keys and security attributes to allow the base device to generate a secure electronic receipt.
- 87. A system for managing electronic receipts, comprising:
a base device configured to store a plurality of policies and generate a plurality of electronic receipts for corresponding transactions using the plurality of policies and forward the generated electronic receipts to a plurality of external devices for storage; wherein for each electronic receipt, which one of the plurality of policies is used for generating that electronic receipt depends on the corresponding transaction.
- 88. The system of claim 87 further comprising:
a plurality of portable devices; wherein the plurality of portable devices correspond to the plurality of external devices; and wherein each of the plurality of portable devices is configured to store a plurality of electronic receipts and allow one or more of the plurality of stored electronic receipts to be retrieved.
- 89. The system of claim 88 further comprising:
a plurality of user devices; wherein each of the plurality of user devices is configured to communicate with at least one of the plurality portable devices to allow a user of a portable device to manage the plurality of electronic receipts stored on that portable device.
- 90. The system of claim 89 further comprising:
a management server configured to communicate with at least one of the plurality of user devices and retrieve information relating to one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on at least one of the plurality of portable devices.
- 91. The system of claim 90 further comprising:
an administration system configured to provide at least one of the plurality of policies; wherein the management server cooperates with the administration system to restore one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts on a portable device.
- 92. The system of claim 90 wherein the management server interacts with one or more applications and communicates the retrieved information to the one or more applications.
- 93. The system of claim 89 wherein at least one user device and at least one portable device cooperate with each other in an off-line manner to allow the user to manage the plurality of electronic receipts.
- 94. The system of claim 89 wherein information relating to one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts is stored in a first user device; and
wherein the information relating to one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts is exported to one or more applications residing either within or without the first user device.
- 95. The system of claim 87 further comprising:
a plurality of administration systems, each administration system configured to communicate with the base device and provide at least one of the plurality of policies to the base device to allow the base device to generate electronic receipts accordingly.
- 96. The system of claim 95 wherein each administration system periodically updates at least one of the plurality of policies and forwards the at least one updated policy to the base device.
- 97. The system of claim 95 wherein the base device is further configured to store copies of the plurality of electronic receipts generated by the base device in a local receipt storage.
- 98. The system of claim 97 wherein contents of the local receipt storage are periodically uploaded to one of the plurality of administration systems.
- 99. The system of claim 97 wherein a user of a portable device is able to use the base device to restore an electronic receipt on that portable device by using contents of the local receipt storage.
- 100. The system of claim 97 wherein contents of the local receipt storage are exported to one or more applications residing either within or without the base device.
- 101. The system of claim 95 wherein the base device is further configured to store historical activity information relating to the plurality of electronic receipts generated by the base device in a local receipt activity log.
- 102. The system of claim 101 wherein contents of the local receipt activity log are periodically uploaded to one of the plurality of administration systems.
- 103. The system of claim 95 wherein at least one of the plurality of administration systems is further configured to collect information from the base device.
- 104. The system of claim 103 wherein the information collected from the base device is used for reporting purposes.
- 105. The system of claim 103 wherein the information collected from the base device is used for fraud control.
- 106. The system of claim 103 wherein the information collected from the base device is used for base device management.
- 107. The system of claim 95 wherein at least one of the plurality of administration systems is further configured to generate and manage keys and security attributes to allow the base device to generate a secure electronic receipt.
- 108. The system of claim 88 wherein at least one of the plurality of portable devices includes user information relating to the user of the portable device; and
wherein when the user wishes to conduct a transaction, the user information is forwarded by the portable device to the base device and used by the base device to generate a corresponding electronic receipt for the transaction.
- 109. The system of claim 88 wherein the plurality of portable devices include at least one of a smart card, a personal digital assistant, a cellular phone, a pager, a memory stick, a secure digital card, a dongle and a payment card.
- 110. The system of claim 88 wherein one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on at least one of the plurality of portable devices are protected from unauthorized access.
- 111. The system of claim 88 wherein one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on at least one of the plurality of portable devices each has one or more associated access conditions.
- 112. The system of claim 87 wherein the plurality of policies correspond to a plurality of service providers.
- 113. The system of claim 87 wherein the base device is assigned a unique identifier.
- 114. The system of claim 26 wherein information relating to the unique identifier is incorporated into the electronic receipt generated by the base device.
- 115. The system of claim 88 wherein the base device uses information from a portable device and a service provider environment to generate an electronic receipt.
- 116. The system of claim 115 wherein the service provider environment includes one or more peripheral device including an electronic cash register.
- 117. The system of claim 88 wherein the base device is further configured to delete an electronic receipt from a portable device if the electronic receipt has become invalid or has been confirmed for deletion.
- 118. The system of claim 87 wherein the base device includes at least one of a point of sales device, an ATM, a kiosk, a personal computer and a telephone including a cellular phone.
- 119. The system of claim 89 wherein at least one of the plurality of user devices is further configured to allow a user of a portable device to display one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on the portable device.
- 120. The system of claim 90 wherein the plurality of user devices communicate with the management server via an open network.
- 121. The system of claim 89 wherein a user of a portable device is able to exchange information between at least one of the plurality of user devices and the portable device.
- 122. The system of claim 89 wherein a user of a portable device is able to delete one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on the portable device using at least one of the plurality of user devices.
- 123. The system of claim 89 wherein a user of a portable device is able to transfer one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on the portable device onto at least one of the plurality of user devices.
- 124. The system of claim 123 wherein the user is further able to delete the one or more transferred electronic receipts from the at least one user device.
- 125. The system of claim 123 wherein the user is further able to download the previously transferred one or more electronic receipts from the at least one user device to the portable device.
- 126. The system of claim 89 wherein a user of a portable device is able to store a duplicate copy of one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on the portable device onto at least one of the plurality of user devices.
- 127. The system of claim 87 wherein a first electronic receipt stored on a first external device allows a user to redeem a service or merchandise; and
wherein upon the user requesting redemption of the service or merchandise, the base device retrieves the first electronic receipt from the first external device and directs the electronic receipt to be deleted from the first external device.
- 128. The system of claim 87 wherein at least one of the plurality of electronic receipts is tamper-proof.
- 129. The system of claim 87 wherein at least one of the plurality of electronic receipts includes a validity period.
- 130. The system of claim 87 wherein at least one of the plurality of electronic receipts includes receipt status information.
- 131. The system of claim 87 wherein at least one of the plurality of electronic receipts includes transaction identifying information.
- 132. A system for managing electronic receipts, comprising:
a plurality of portable devices, each portable device configured to store a plurality of electronic receipts corresponding to a plurality of transactions and allow one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts to be retrieved; a plurality of base devices, each base device configured to generate an electronic receipt for a corresponding transaction and forward the generated electronic receipt to one of the plurality of portable devices for storage; and an administration system configured to communicate with the plurality of base devices and respectively provide one or more policies relating to generation and management of electronic receipts to the plurality of base devices to allow each base device to generate electronic receipts accordingly.
- 133. The system of claim 132 further comprising:
a plurality of user devices, each user device configured to communicate with one or more of the plurality of portable devices to allow a user to manage the plurality of electronic receipts stored on each portable device; and a management server configured to communicate with one or more of the plurality of user devices and retrieve information relating to one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on a corresponding portable device.
- 134. The system of claim 132 wherein a first portable device includes user information relating to a user of the first portable device; and
wherein when the user wishes to conduct a transaction, the user information is forwarded by the first portable device to a first base device and used by the first base device to generate a corresponding electronic receipt for the transaction.
- 135. The system of claim 132 wherein the plurality of portable devices include at least one of a smart card, a personal digital assistant, a cellular phone, a pager, a memory stick, a secure digital card, a dongle and a payment card.
- 136. The system of claim 132 wherein one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on at least one of the plurality of portable devices are protected from unauthorized access.
- 137. The system of claim 132 wherein one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on at least one of the plurality of portable devices each has one or more associated access conditions.
- 138. The system of claim 132 wherein at least one of the plurality of base devices is further configured to store copies of the one or more policies relating to generation and management of electronic receipts provided by the administration system.
- 139. The system of claim 132 wherein the one or more policies relating to generation and management of electronic receipts correspond to one or more service providers.
- 140. The system of claim 132 wherein the administration system periodically updates the one or more policies relating to generation and management of electronic receipts and forwards one or more updated policies to one or more of the plurality of base devices.
- 141. The system of claim 132 wherein at least one of the plurality of base devices is further configured to store a copy of the generated electronic receipt in a local receipt storage.
- 142. The system of claim 141 wherein contents of the local receipt storage are periodically uploaded to the administration system.
- 143. The system of claim 141 wherein a user is able to restore an electronic receipt on the corresponding portable device by using contents of the local receipt storage.
- 144. The system of claim 141 wherein contents of the local receipt storage are exported to one or more applications residing either within or without the corresponding base device.
- 145. The system of claim 132 wherein at least one of the plurality of base devices is further configured to store historical activity information relating to the generated electronic receipt in a local receipt activity log.
- 146. The system of claim 145 wherein contents of the local receipt activity log are periodically uploaded to the administration system.
- 147. The system of claim 132 wherein at least one of the plurality of base devices is assigned a unique identifier.
- 148. The system of claim 147 wherein information relating to the unique identifier is incorporated into the electronic receipt generated by the corresponding base device.
- 149. The system of claim 132 wherein at least one of the plurality of base devices uses information from one of the plurality of portable devices and a service provider environment to generate the electronic receipt.
- 150. The system of claim 149 wherein the service provider environment includes one or more peripheral devices including an electronic cash register.
- 151. The system of claim 132 wherein at least one of the plurality of base devices is further configured to delete an electronic receipt from one of the plurality of portable devices if the electronic receipt has become invalid or has been confirmed for deletion.
- 152. The system of claim 132 wherein the plurality of base devices include at least one of a point of sales device, an ATM, a kiosk, a personal computer and a telephone including a cellular phone.
- 153. The system of claim 133 wherein at least one of the plurality of user devices is further configured to allow a user to display one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on a corresponding portable device.
- 154. The system of claim 133 wherein at least one of the plurality of user devices communicates with the management server via an open network.
- 155. The system of claim 133 wherein a user is able to exchange information between a corresponding portable device and at least one of the plurality of user devices.
- 156. The system of claim 133 wherein a user is able to delete one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on a corresponding portable device using one of the plurality of user devices.
- 157. The system of claim 133 wherein a user is able to transfer one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on a corresponding portable device onto one of the plurality of user devices.
- 158. The system of claim 157 wherein the user is further able to delete the one or more transferred electronic receipts from one of the plurality of user devices.
- 159. The system of claim 157 wherein the user is further able to download the previously transferred one or more electronic receipts from one of the plurality of user devices to one of the plurality of portable devices.
- 160. The system of claim 133 wherein a user is able to store a duplicate copy of one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts stored on a corresponding portable device onto one of the plurality of user devices.
- 161. The system of claim 133 wherein the management server interacts with one or more applications and communicates the retrieved information from one or more of the plurality of portable devices to the one or more applications.
- 162. The system of claim 132 wherein an electronic receipt stored on a corresponding portable device allows a user to redeem a service or merchandise; and
wherein upon the user requesting redemption of the service or merchandise, one of the plurality of base devices retrieves the electronic receipt from the corresponding portable device and directs the electronic receipt to be deleted from the corresponding portable device.
- 163. The system of claim 133 wherein one of the plurality of user devices and one of the plurality of portable devices cooperate with each other in an off-line manner to allow a user to manage the plurality of electronic receipts stored on the corresponding portable device.
- 164. The system of claim 133 wherein information relating to one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts is stored in one of the plurality of user devices; and
wherein the information relating to one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts is exported to one or more applications residing either within or without one of the plurality of user devices.
- 165. The system of claim 133 wherein the management server cooperates with the administration system to restore one or more of the plurality of electronic receipts on a corresponding portable device.
- 166. The system of claim 132 wherein at least one of the plurality of electronic receipts is tamper-proof.
- 167. The system of claim 132 wherein at least one of the plurality of electronic receipts includes a validity period.
- 168. The system of claim 132 wherein at least one of the plurality of electronic receipts includes receipt status information.
- 169. The system of claim 132 wherein at least one of the plurality of electronic receipts includes transaction identifying information.
- 170. The system of claim 132 wherein the administration system is further configured to collect information from one or more of the plurality of base devices.
- 171. The system of claim 170 wherein the information collected from one or more of the plurality of base devices by the administration system is used for reporting purposes.
- 172. The system of claim 170 wherein the information collected from one or more of the plurality of base devices by the administration system is used for fraud control.
- 173. The system of claim 170 wherein the information collected from one or more of the plurality of base devices by the administration system is used for base device management.
