Claims
- 1. An apparatus for inserting a suture end portion into an aperture in a surgical needle, which comprises:
- a) a frame;
- b) a needle positioner for holding a surgical needle such that the needle aperture is in a fixed position;
- c) at least one guide member defining an angled guide area having a relatively wide portion and a vertex portion, said vertex portion being aligned with the fixed position of the needle aperture:
- d) transport means mounted to said frame for advancing a suture end portion into said relatively wide portion of said at least one guide member; and
- e) deflection means movable relative to the at least one guide member, the suture end portion being moved into said vertex portion of the angled guide area in response to movement of said deflection means, wherein said deflection means comprises a resilient strand which moves the suture end portion laterally into said vertex portion of the angled guide area.
- 2. An apparatus for inserting a suture end portion into an aperture in a surgical needle, which comprises:
- a) a frame
- b) a needle positioner for holding a surgical needle such that the needle aperture is in a fixed position;
- c) at least one guide member defining an angled guide area having a relatively wide portion and a vertex portion, said vertex portion being aligned with the fixed position of the needle aperture;
- d) transport means mounted to said frame for advancing a suture end portion into said relatively wide portion of said at least one guide member;
- e) a mounting system and first and second dies mounted in said mounting system, said first and second dies having mutually opposing edges, said first die being fixedly mounted relative to said mounting system, wherein said needle positioner includes a notch in said first die for receiving a needle, said notch being aligned with the vertex portion of said guide member, and said second die being movable between a first position wherein said first and second dies are spaced apart to define a gap therebetween, and a second position wherein said mutually opposing edges of said first and second dies are in close proximity; and
- f) deflection means movable relative to the at least one guide member, the suture end portion being moved into said vertex portion of the angled guide area in response to movement of said deflection means, wherein said deflection means comprises a resilient strand which is fixedly attached to said second die and which has a portion extending beyond said opposing edge of said second die.
- 3. An apparatus for inserting a suture end portion into an aperture in a surgical needle, which comprises:
- a) a frame
- b) a needle positioner for holding a surgical needle such that the needle aperture is in a fixed position;
- c) at least one guide member defining an angled guide are having a relatively wide portion and a vertex portion, said vertex portion being aligned with the fixed position of the needle aperture, said at least one guide member including a pair of wires configured into an X-shape and presenting at least one V-shaped angled guide area;
- d) transport means mounted to said frame for advancing a suture end portion into said relatively wide portion of said at least one guide member; and
- e) deflection means movable relative to the at least one guide member, the suture end portion being moved into said vertex portion of the angled guide area in response to movement of said deflection means.
- 4. An apparatus for inserting a suture end portion into an aperture in a surgical needle, which comprises:
- a) a frame
- b) a needle positioner for holding a surgical needle such that the needle aperture is in a fixed position;
- c) at least one guide member defining an angled guide area having a relatively wide portion and a vertex portion, said vertex portion being aligned with the fixed position of the needle aperture, said at least one guide member including a wire configured into an M-shape and presenting at least one V-shaped angled guide area;
- d) transport means mounted to said frame for advancing a suture end portion into said relatively wide portion of said at least one guide member; and
- e) deflection means movable relative to the at least one guide member, the suture end portion being moved into said vertex portion of the angled guide area in response to movement of said deflection means.
- 5. An apparatus for inserting a suture end portion into an aperture in a surgical needle, which comprises:
- a) a frame
- b) a needle positioner for holding a surgical needle such that the needle aperture is in a fixed position;
- c) at least one guide member defining an angled guide area having a relatively wide portion and a vertex portion, said vertex portion being aligned with the fixed position of the needle aperture, said at least one guide member including at least one flat plate having an edge defining a V-shaped angled guide area;
- d) transport means mounted to said frame for advancing a suture end portion into said relatively wide portion of said at least one guide member; and
- e) deflection means movable relative to the at least one guide member, the suture end portion being moved into said vertex portion of the angled guide area in response to movement of said deflection means.
- 6. An apparatus for inserting a suture end portion into an aperture in a surgical needle, which comprises:
- a) a frame;
- b) a needle positioner for holding a surgical needle such that the needle aperture is in a fixed position;
- c) at least one V-shaped guide member defining an angled guide area disposed in a plane transverse to an axis of the surgical needle aperture, said angled guide area defining a relatively wide portion and a vertex portion, said vertex portion being aligned with the fixed position of the needle aperture, wherein said vertex portion is formed by two intersecting linear members generally defining said plane;
- d) transport means mounted to said frame for advancing a suture end portion into said relatively wide portion of said at least one guide member; and
- e) deflection means movable relative to the at least one V-shaped guide member for moving the suture end portion into said vertex portion of the angled guide area.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the deflection means is movable in a direction substantially parallel to the plane defined by the linear members.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the at least one guide member includes at least two linear edges generally defining said plane.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the deflection means is movable in a direction substantially parallel to the plane defined by the linear edges of the guide member.
