Claims
- 1. A cytology collection apparatus comprising first and second detachable portions defining a chamber; first and second ports defining at least two flow paths through the chamber; and a porous arrangement having a collection site adapted to collect cells positioned across one of the fluid flow paths.
- 2. A cytology collection apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the porous arrangement is adapted to define a flow path having first and second branches, wherein the first branch extends through the collection site and the second branch bypasses the collection site.
- 3. A cytology collection apparatus according to claim 2 wherein the porous arrangement includes a first porous medium capable of preventing the passage of cells therethrough and a second porous medium capable of removing particulate matter from a fluid.
- 4. A cytology collection apparatus according to claim 3 wherein the first porous medium is a porous membrane and the second porous medium is a depth filter.
- 5. A cytology collection apparatus according to claim 3 wherein the porous membrane is selected from the group consisting of a porous polycarbonate membrane, an unmodified nylon membrane, and a modified nylon membrane.
- 6. A cytology collection apparatus according to claim 5 wherein the porous membrane is a porous polycarbonate membrane.
- 7. A cytology collection apparatus according to claim 3 wherein the first porous medium is laminated to the second porous medium.
- 8. A cytology collection apparatus according to claim 4 wherein the porous membrane has a pore size of about one micron to about five microns.
- 9. A cytology collection apparatus according to claim 7 wherein the porous membrane has a pore size of about five microns.
- 10. A cytology collection apparatus according to claim 3 wherein the first porous medium is a porous membrane and the collection site is the surface of the porous membrane.
- 11. A cytology collection apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the second branch extends through the second porous medium.
- 12. A cytology collection apparatus according to claim 1 wherein at least one of the first and second ports comprises a connecting means.
- 13. A cytology collection apparatus according to claim 12 wherein the connecting means comprises a luer lock, a friction connection, a tapered hose connection or a threaded connection.
- 14. A cytology collection apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the first port is configured as a needle having a lumen.
- 15. A cytology collection apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a treatment device which includes a housing comprising inlet and outlet ports defining a flow path, a filter positioned across the flow path, and a plurality of substrate beads having a antibody bound to the surface thereof, the beads being contained within an outlet chamber.
- 16. A method for collecting cells for cytology comprising the steps of:
- a) passing a biological fluid containing cells through a cytology collection apparatus which includes a porous arrangement having a collection site adapted to collect cells positioned across the fluid flow path; and
- b) depositing a monolayer of cells on the collection site.
- 17. The method for collecting cells for cytology of claim 16 wherein the cytology collection apparatus comprises first and second detachable portions defining a chamber; first and second ports defining a flow path through the chamber; and the collection site is positioned across the fluid flow path communicating with the first port.
- 18. The method for collecting cells of claim 7 further comprising the steps of:
- c) saturating the collection site with a monolayer of cells thereby blocking the flow of biological fluid through a first branch of the flow path extending through the collection site and causing the flow to bypass the collection site and flow through a second branch of the flow path; and
- d) stopping the flow of fluid through the cytology collection apparatus.
- 19. The method for collecting cells of claim 18 further comprising the steps of:
- e) opening the cytology collection apparatus to expose the collection site of the porous arrangement; and
- f) placing the collection site against the surface of a slide to deposit cells from the collection site of the porous arrangement onto the slide surface.
- 20. The method for collecting cells of claim 18 further comprising the steps of:
- e) causing fluid to flow through the cytology collection apparatus from the second port toward the first port, thereby transferring cells from the collection site to a culture medium.
- 21. The method for collecting cells of claim 18 further comprising the step of:
- e) passing a fixative through the cytology collection apparatus.
