Claims
- 1. A method of operating gaming devices interconnected by a computer network to a host computer comprising:
- issuing a unique identification card to a player of one of the gaming devices;
- receiving the card into a translucent card-reader bezel on the gaming device;
- sensing a user identification code on the card;
- actuating a plurality of lights that are behind the bezel if the sensed code is a valid identification code; and
- tracking the user's play responsive to sensing a valid identification code.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein actuating a plurality of lights that are behind the bezel comprises actuating the lights in a first lighting mode and wherein said method further comprises actuating the lights in a second lighting mode if the sensed code is not a valid identification code.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein said method further comprises:
- determining whether the sensed code is a valid identification code; and
- actuating the lights in a third mode during the pendency of the determining step.
- 4. The method of claim 2 wherein said lights extend substantially along the length of said card reader opening.
- 5. The method of claim 4 wherein said lights comprise a first row adjacent said first side and a second row adjacent said second side.
- 6. The method of claim 4 wherein one of the modes comprises flashing at least one of the lights.
- 7. The method of claim 4 wherein one of the modes comprises lighting a plurality of the lights in a first color and the other mode comprises lighting a plurality of the lights in a second color.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein actuating the light in a first lighting mode comprises lighting a plurality of green lights.
- 9. The method of claim 7 wherein actuating the lights in a second lighting mode comprises lighting a plurality of red lights.
- 10. The method of claim 1 wherein said method further comprises actuating the lights in a player-attract mode prior to the step of receiving the card into a translucent card-reader bezel on the gaming device.
- 11. The method of claims 1 wherein said method further comprises permitting a player to play one of the gaming devices without receiving the card into the card-reader bezel.
- 12. A card reader for reading a user identification card having a user identification code thereon comprising:
- a card-reader face;
- a first opening for receiving the card, said opening being defined in said face;
- a substantially planar board having a second opening defined therethrough, said board being mounted on a rear side of said card-reader face with said first and second openings in substantial alignment;
- a plurality of lights mounted on a front side of said board, said lights being adjacent and substantially surrounding the second opening and further being visible from a front side of said card-reader face;
- means for sensing the user identification code on the card;
- means for determining whether the sensed code is a valid identification code;
- means for actuating the lights in a first lighting mode if the sensed code is a valid identification code; and
- means for actuating the lights in a second lighting mode if the sensed code is not a valid identification code.
- 13. The card reader of claim 12 wherein the lights comprise light emitting diodes.
- 14. The card reader of claim 13 wherein the light emitting diodes include dual light emitting diodes for producing both the first and the second modes.
- 15. The card reader of claim 12 wherein said card reader further includes means for actuating the lights in a third lighting mode when no card is received in the opening.
- 16. The card reader of claim 12 wherein said second opening comprises an elongate slot having first and second sides and wherein said lights comprise a first row adjacent said first side and a second row adjacent said second side.
- 17. The card reader of claim 16 wherein said first and second rows extend substantially along the length of said first and second sides.
- 18. The card reader of claim 17 wherein one of the modes comprises flashing at least one of the lights.
- 19. The card reader of claim 17 wherein one of the modes comprises lighting a plurality of the lights in a first color and the other mode comprises lighting a plurality of the lights in a second color.
- 20. The method of claim 19 wherein said first lighting mode comprises a plurality of green lights.
- 21. The method of claim 19 wherein said second lighting mode comprises a plurality of red lights.
- 22. The card reader of claim 12 wherein said face further includes a translucent bezel and wherein said first opening is defined in said bezel.
- 23. A card reader for reading a user identification card having a user identification code thereon comprising:
- a unique user identification card;
- a card reader including an elongate slot having first and second sides, said card being receivable in said slot;
- a bezel mounted on said card reader and having first and second sides substantially parallel to and adjacent said first and second slot sides;
- an elongate lighting mechanism mounted on said bezel, said lighting mechanism extending parallel to and substantially along the length of said slot, said lighting mechanism being constructed and arranged to emit light in a first lighting mode when said card is not received in said slot and to emit light in a second lighting mode when said card is received in said slot.
- 24. The card reader of claim 23 wherein said lighting mechanism comprises a row of light.
- 25. The card reader of claim 23 wherein one of the modes comprises flashing light.
- 26. The card reader of claim 23 wherein one of the modes comprises emitting light in a first color and the other mode comprises emitting light in a second color.
- 27. The method of claim 26 wherein said first lighting mode comprises green light.
- 28. The method of claim 26 wherein said second lighting mode comprises red light.
