Claims
- 1. Apparatus for simultaneously winding a supplied first linear element and a supplied second linear element into separate packages comprising:
- a. a first rotatable collet having a package collection region and a temporary collection region, the first collet including a fixed member located in the temporary collection region effective to engage the first element linearly advanced through the region;
- b. a second rotatable collet having a package collection region and a temporary collection region, the second collet including a fixed member located in the temporary collection region effective to engage the second element linearly advanced through the region, the collets being in spaced apart, side by side, parallel relationship below the element supply means;
- c. a single interim means for simultaneously advancing both linear elements during times the elements are not collected on the collets, the single interim means being located in spaced relation which the collets effective to simultaneously advance both the linear elements along individual paths that advance each of them over its respective collet in the temporary collection region so that the fixed member in its respective temporary collection region can engage the linear element during rotation of its collet by a collet rotating means to begin collection of each linear element on its respective collet and to effect severance of each linear element between its respective collet and the interim means; and
- d. means for moving the elements from collection in their respective temporary collection regions to their respective package collection regions for package formation.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 including means for holding each element for collection in the temporary collection region of its respective collet until the collet is rotating at a desired package winding speed.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein each collet includes a circumferential groove in the temporary collection region such that each linear element being advanced through its respective temporary collection region contacts the groove.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein the fixed member of each collet is located at the groove of its respective collet such that the advanced element enters the groove and is guided by the groove into engagement with the fixed member.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1 including a single temporary advancing means for advancing both elements as waste.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the temporary advancing means also collects both elements.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the temporary advancing means comprises a member rotatably mounted on a substantially horizontal axis of rotation and spaced apart elongated members on the rotatable member upon which both linear elements are collected, the elongated members being circumferentially disposed around the axis of rotation of the rotatable member and extending generally paralllel to the axis of rotation.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the interim means comprises a member rotatable mounted on a substantially horizontal axis of rotation and spaced apart elongated members on the rotatable member upon which both linear elements are collected, the elongated members being circumferentially disposed around the axis of rotation of the rotatable member and extending generally parallel to the axis of rotation.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the interim means is located below the collets and the means for supplying the linear elements is located above the collets.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the interim means is located so that each linear element bends on its respective collet during advancement of the elements by the interim means.
- 11. Apparatus for simultaneously beginning winding of two glass strands into separate packages comprising:
- a. means supplying molten glass streams;
- b. means for attenuating the glass streams into glass filaments;
- c. means for gathering the glass filaments into a first glass strand and a second glass strand;
- d. a first rotatable collet having a package collection region and a temporary collection region, the first collet including a fixed member located in the temporary collection region in a position so it is effective to engage the first strand linearly advanced through the region;
- e. a second rotatable collet having a package collection region and a temporary collection region, the second collet including a fixed member located in the temporary collection region in a position so it is effective to engage the second strand linearly advanced through the region, the collets being in spaced apart, side by side, parallel relationship below the strand supply means;
- f. means for rotating the collets;
- g. a single interim means for simultaneously advancing both strands during times the strands are not collected on the collets, the single interim means being located in spaced relation with the collets in a position effective to simultaneously advance both the first strand along a path that brings the first strand into contact with the first collect in the temporary collection region of the first collect so that the fixed member can engage the first strand during rotation of the first collet to begin collection of the first strand on the first collet and effect severance of the first strand between the first collet and the interim means and the second strand along a path that brings the second strand into contact with the second collet in the temporary collection region of the second collet so that the fixed member can engage the second strand during rotation of the second collet to begin collection of the second strand on the second collet and to effect severance of the second strand between the second collet and the interim means; and
- h. means for moving the strands from collection in their respective temporary collection regions to their respective package collection regions for package formation.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11 including a single means for holding both of the strands in the respective temporary collection regions until the collets are rotating at a desired package collection speed.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the temporary collection regions are located at the end regions of the collets.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein each collet includes a circumferential groove in its temporary collection region.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein each member extends into the groove on its respective collet.
- 16. Apparatus for simultaneously winding two glass strands into separate packages comprising:
- a. means for supplying a first glass strand and a second glass strand;
- b. a first rotatable collet having a package collection region and a temporary collection region, the first collet including a fixed member located in the temporary collection region in a position so it is effective to engage the first strand linearly advanced through the region;
- c. a second rotatable collet having a package collection region and a temporary collection region, the second collet including a fixed member located in the temporary collection region in a position so it is effective to engage the second strand linearly advanced through the region, the collets being in spaced apart, side by side, parallel relationship below the element supply means;
- d. means for rotating the collets;
- e. a first single interim means for simultaneously advancing both strands as waste when the strands are not being collected on the collets and before both strands are advanced by the second interim means;
- f. a second single interim means for simultaneously advancing both strands after the first interim means and during times the strands are not collected on the collets, the single interim means being located in spaced relation with the collets in a position effective to simultaneously advance both the strands along individual paths that advance each of them over its respective collet in the temporary collection region so that the fixed member in its respective temporary collection region can engage the strand during rotation of its collet to being collection of each strand on its respective collet and to effect severance of each strand between its respective collet and the second interim means; and
- g. means for moving the strands from collection in their respective temporary collection regions to their respective package collection regions for package formation.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 16 including means for holding each strand for collection in the temporary collection region of its respective collet until the collet is rotating at a desired package winding speed.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 16 wherein each collet includes a circumferential groove in the temporary collection region such that each strand being advanced through its respective temporary collection region contacts the groove.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 16 wherein the first interim means also collects both strands as waste.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 19 wherein the first interim means comprises a member rotatably mounted on a substantially horizontal axis of rotation and spaced apart elongated members on the rotatable member upon which both strands are collected, the elongated members being circumferentially disposed around the axis of rotation of the rotatable member and extending generally parallel to the axis of rotation.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 16 wherein the second interim means comprises a member rotatably mounted on a substantially horizontal axis of rotation and spaced apart elongated members on the rotatable member upon which both strands are collected, the elongated members being circumferentially disposed around the axis of rotation of the rotatable member and extending generally parallel to the axis of rotation.
- 22. Method of simultaneously winding two linear elements into separate packages including the steps of:
- a. supplying a first linear element and a second linear element from a supply;
- b. rotating a first collet having a package collection region and a temporary collection region, the first collet including a fixed member located in the temporary collection region in a position so it is effective to engage the first element linearly advanced through the region;
- c. rotating a second collet having a package collection region and a temporary collection region, the second collet including a fixed member located in the temporary collection region in a position so it is effective to engage the second element linearly advanced through the region, the collets being in spaced apart, side by side, parallel relationship below the element supply;
- d. interimly advancing both linear elements simultaneously during times the elements are not collected on the collets, the advancing being from a single location spaced from the collets in a position effective to simultaneously advance both the linear elements along individual paths that advance each of them over its respective collet in the temporary collection region so that the fixed member in its respective temporary collection region can engage the linear element during rotation of its collet to begin collection of each linear element on its respective collet and to effect severance of each linear element between its respective collet and the interim advancing location; and
- f. moving the elements from collection in their respective temporary collection regions to their respective package collection regions for package formation.
- 23. Method of claim 22 including holding each element for collection in the temporary collection region of its respective collet until the collet is rotating at a desired package winding speed.
- 24. Method of claim 22 including temporarily advancing both elements together as waste.
- 25. Method of claim 24 wherein the temporary advancing step also collects both elements together as waste.
- 26. Method of claim 22 wherein the interim advancing step includes bending each linear element on its respective collet during advancement.
- 27. Method of simultaneously winding two glass strands into separate packages including the steps of:
- a. supplying a first glass strand and a second glass strand from a supply;
- b. rotating a first collet having a package collection region and a temporary collection region, the first collet including a fixed member located in the temporary collection region in a position so it is effective to engage the first strand linearly advanced through the region;
- c. rotating a second collet having a package collection region and a temporary collection region, the second collet including a fixed member located in the temporary collection region in a position so it is effective to engage the second strand linearly advanced through the region, the collets being in spaced apart, side by side, parallel relationship below the element supply;
- d. temporarily advancing both strands simultaneously as waste when the strands are not being collected on the collets and before both strands are interimly advanced;
- e. interimly advancing both strands simultaneously after the first interim means and during times the strands are not collected on the collets, the single interim means being located in spaced relation with the collets in a position effective to simultaneously advance both the strands along individual paths that advance each of them over its respective collet in the temporary collection region so that the fixed member in its respective temporary collection region can engage the strand during rotation of its collet to begin collection of each strand on its respective collet and to effect severance of each strand between its respective collet and the second interim means; and
- f. moving the strands from collection in their respective temporary collection regions to their respective package collection regions for package formation.
