Claims
- 1. A method of wrapping a solid article comprising the steps of feeding said article along a translatory path, forming a tube of wrapping material and moving it alongside said translatory path, with at least the end of said tube nearest said article open, providing an inserted expansible tube-opening device in collapsed condition within at least the open end of said tube, moving said tube-opening device along said translatory path with said article, expanding said inserted tube-opening device to open out at least said open end of said tube and grip said tube, displacing said expanded tube-opening device laterally of said path to pull said tube toward the associated article during feeding of said article into the tube, and feeding said article laterally of said translatory path to feed said article into said tube while said tube and article move along said path.
- 2. The method in claim 1, including the step of moving said tube alongside said path by movement of the inserted tube-opening device.
- 3. A machine for wrapping solid articles comprising an article carrier for supporting an article to be wrapped, mechanism for producing translatory motion of said article carrier in a path in a forward direction, tube-forming apparatus for producing and moving a tube of wrapping material alongside said path in said direction with at least that end of the tube nearest said article carrier open; an expansible tube-opening device mounted for translatory movement with said article carrier, mechanism for projecting said tube-opening device in a collapsed condition laterally of said carrier towards said tube-forming apparatus to insert said tube-opening device within at least the open end of the tube formed by that apparatus, said mechanism including means for retracting said tube-opening device in the opposite lateral direction, mechanism for expanding said tube-opening device while it is in said projected position and during at least the first part of said retraction whereby it opens said tube and pulls said opened tube toward an associated article on said carrier, an article pusher mounted for translatory movement with said article carrier and mechanism for projecting said pusher laterally of said carrier during said retraction of said tube-opening device.
- 4. The machine defined in claim 3, wherein means is provided for conveying a series of said article carriers in a row, forming tubes in association with each carrier and feeding the respective articles from the carriers into the associated tubes.
- 5. A wrapping machine comprising the combination of an article carrier, an expansible and contractible tube-opening device and an article pusher movably mounted in operative association and including means whereby said article carrier is moved in a translatory first direction, means moving said tube opening device with a compound movement comprising movement with said carrier in said first direction, movement laterally of said first direction in a projecting direction with respect to the carrier, movement in a retracting direction opposite said projecting direction and expanding and contracting movement; and means moving said article pusher with a compound movement comprising movement with said carrier in said first direction relative to said tube-opening device in said projecting and retracting directions.
