Claims
- 1. A subscriber station apparatus comprising:
a Universal System Table comprising a first set of system identification codes, wherein each system identification code is associated with a single geographic region of a second set of geographic regions, wherein the Universal System Table comprises geographic region information indicative of which of the system identification codes in the first set are associated with the same geographic region as each other, and wherein for each pair of two system identification codes associated with the same geographic region as each other the Universal System Table further identifies whether one of the pair is more desirable than the other; and a System Determination Processor configured to receive a single system identification code received from a transmitting communication system, wherein the transmitting communication system operates in a current geographic region, wherein the single system identification code is indicative of a transmitter system identity of the transmitting communication system, wherein the System Determination Processor is further configured to search for the single system identification code among the first set in the Universal System Table, and to select a selected system identification code from a subset of the first set, wherein every system identification code in the subset of the first set is associated with the current geographic region.
- 2. The subscriber station apparatus of claim 1 wherein the geographic region information consists of a geographic region bit for each system identification code in the first set.
- 3. The subscriber station apparatus of claim 1 wherein the geographic region information comprises a geographic region bit for each system identification code in the first set.
- 4. The subscriber station apparatus of claim 1 further comprising:
receiver configured to downconvert a received wireless signal to provide a first downconverted signal; and demodulator configured to demodulate the first downconverted signal to provide the single system identification code.
- 5. The subscriber station apparatus of claim 4 wherein the Universal System Table further comprises acquisition parameters for each of the first set, and wherein said System Determination Processor is further configured to reconfigure said receiver and said demodulator in accordance with acquisition parameters corresponding to the selected system identification code.
- 6. The subscriber station apparatus of claim 4 wherein said System Determination Processor is configured to configure said receiver and said demodulator to receive the single system identification code in accordance with acquisition parameters corresponding to a predetermined home system associated with the subscriber station apparatus.
- 7. The subscriber station apparatus of claim 4 wherein said System Determination Processor is configured to configure said receiver and said demodulator to receive the single system identification code in accordance with acquisition parameters corresponding to a communication system most frequently used by the subscriber station apparatus.
- 8. The subscriber station apparatus of claim 4 wherein said System Determination Processor is configured to configure said receiver and said demodulator to receive the single system identification code in accordance with acquisition parameters corresponding to communication system most recently used by the subscriber station apparatus as the first communication system.
- 9. The subscriber station apparatus of claim 1 wherein the system identification codes in the first set are sorted by geographic region.
- 10. The subscriber station apparatus of claim 9 wherein the system identification codes in the subset of the first set are further sorted based on desirability of each communication system.
- 11. The subscriber station apparatus of claim 1 wherein said Universal System Table comprises a non-volatile memory.
- 12. The subscriber station apparatus of claim 1 wherein the Universal System Table further comprises preferred system information indicating whether each of the first set of system identification codes corresponds to a system that is preferred, and wherein said System Determination Processor is configured to select the selected system identification code based on the preferred system information.
- 13. The subscriber station apparatus of claim 12 wherein the preferred system information in the Universal System Table consists of a more desirable bit for each system identification code in the first set.
- 14. The subscriber station apparatus of claim 1 wherein the Universal System Table further comprises negative system information indicating whether each of the first set of system identification codes corresponds to a negative system, and wherein said System Determination Processor is configured to select the selected system identification code based on the negative system information.
- 15. The subscriber station apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a Most Recently Used System Table comprising a list of system identification codes associated with most recently used systems, wherein said System Determination Processor is configured to select the selected system identification code based on the contents of said Most Recently Used System Table.
- 16. The subscriber station apparatus of claim 15 wherein said Most Recently Used System Table comprises a non-volatile memory.
- 17. A subscriber station apparatus comprising:
means for storing a predetermined set of parameters for each of a plurality of communication systems, the predetermined set of parameters comprising system identification code and geographic region; and means for receiving a first system identification code belonging to a first communication system and selecting a second communication system that provides service in the same geographic region as the first communication system based on the first system identification code and the contents of said Universal System Table.
- 18. A method for selecting a communication system for acquisition by a subscriber station, the method comprising:
receiving a single system identification code from a transmitting communication system, wherein the single system identification code identifies the transmitting communication system; searching, in a Universal System Table comprising a first set of system identification codes, for the single system identification code among the first set of system identification codes, wherein each system identification code in the first set is associated with a single geographic region from a second set of geographic regions, wherein the Universal System Table comprises geographic region information indicative of which of the system identification codes in the first set are associated with the same geographic region as each other, and wherein for each pair of two system identification codes from the first set that are associated with the same geographic region as each other the Universal System Table further comprises information indicative of whether one of the pair is more desirable than the other; selecting a selected system identification code from a subset of the first set, wherein every system identification code in the subset of the first set is associated with the current geographic region, wherein the selecting is based on the geographic region information.
- 19. The method of claim 18 wherein the geographic region information consists of a geographic region bit for each system identification code in the first set.
- 20. The method of claim 18 wherein the geographic region information comprises a geographic region bit for each system identification code in the first set.
- 21. The method of claim 18 wherein said receiving comprises:
downconverting a received wireless signal to provide a first downconverted signal; and demodulating the first downconverted signal to provide the single system identification code.
- 22. The method of claim 21 wherein the Universal System Table further comprises acquisition parameters for each of the first set, the method further comprising receiving and demodulating a current system signal in accordance with acquisition parameters corresponding to the selected system identification code.
- 23. The method of claim 18 wherein said receiving is performed in accordance with acquisition parameters corresponding to a predetermined home system of the subscriber station apparatus.
- 24. The method of claim 18 wherein said receiving is performed in accordance with acquisition parameters corresponding to a most frequently used communication system of the subscriber station apparatus.
- 25. The method of claim 18 wherein said receiving is performed in accordance with acquisition parameters corresponding to a most recently used communication system of the subscriber station apparatus.
- 26. The method of claim 18 wherein the system identification codes in the Universal System Table are sorted by geographic region, and wherein the selecting is performed in accordance with the sorting in the Universal System Table.
- 27. The method of claim 26 wherein the system identification codes in the subset of the first set are further sorted based on desirability of each communication system, and wherein the selecting is performed in accordance with the further sorting in the Universal System Table.
- 28. The method of claim 18 wherein the Universal System Table comprises a non-volatile memory, the method further comprising accessing the Universal System Table from the non-volatile memory.
- 29. The method of claim 18 wherein the Universal System Table further comprises preferred system information indicating whether each of the first set of system identification codes corresponds to a system that is preferred, and wherein said selecting is based on the preferred system information.
- 30. The method of claim 29 wherein the preferred system information in the Universal System Table consists of a more desirable bit for each system identification code in the first set.
- 31. The method of claim 18 wherein the Universal System Table further comprises negative system information indicating whether each of the first set of system identification codes corresponds to a negative system, and wherein said selecting is based on the negative system information.
- 32. The method of claim 18 further comprising accessing a Most Recently Used System Table comprising a list of system identification codes associated with most recently used systems, the method further comprising selecting, from the Most Recently Used System Table, a most recently used system identification code associated with a system most recently used by the subscriber station, wherein said receiving is performed in accordance with acquisition parameters corresponding to the most recently used system identification code.
- 33. The subscriber station apparatus of claim 32 wherein said Most Recently Used System Table comprises a non-volatile memory.
