Claims
- 1. An apparatus for reducing the size of a wood member through gradual cutting and removal of wood elements therefrom, said apparatus comprising:
- a supporting member including a supporting surface for supporting said wood member;
- a cutting member movable relative to said supporting member for cutting said wood member while said wood member is supported by said supporting member;
- a platelike pushing member movable relative to said supporting member and said cutting member, said platelike pushing member configured for pushing said wood member towards said cutting member across said supporting member so that said wood member can be cut into smaller pieces by said cutting member; and
- a platelike containing member movable relative to both said pushing member and said supporting member, said containing member movable from a first to a second position,
- said containing member when in said first position being clear of a wood member insertion path allowing at least a portion of said wood member to be placed intermediate said pushing member and said cutting member, said containing member when in said second position blocking said insertion path, wherein said containing member moves in tandem along with said pushing member through a portion of the paths of movement of said containing member and said pushing member.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said cutting member is a cutting disc having wood cutting knives thereon.
- 3. An apparatus for reducing the size of a wood member through gradual cutting and removal of wood elements therefrom, said apparatus comprising:
- a supporting member for supporting said wood member;
- a cutting member movable relative to said supporting member for cutting said wood member while said wood member is supported by said supporting member;
- a first pushing plate movable along a path relative to said supporting member and said cutting member, said first pushing plate configured for pushing said wood member across said supporting member towards said cutting member so that said wood member can be cut into smaller pieces by said cutting member; and
- a second pushing plate movable along a path relative to both said supporting member and said first pushing plate, said second pushing plate movable from a first to a second position, said first position being clear of a wood member insertion path for allowing at least a portion of said wood member to be placed intermediate said first pushing plate and said cutting member, said second pushing plate when in said second position blocking said insertion path,
- said first and second pushing plates configured to move at the same time through at least a portion of their moving paths, such that said second pushing plate leads said first pushing plate through at least a portion of its path, and such that said second pushing plate overhangs said first pushing plate such that an open cavity is defined between said supporting member and said first and second pushing plates, said cavity directed towards said cutting member and said cavity being moved towards said cutting member as said first and second pushing plates move along a portion of their moving paths.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein said cutting member is a cutting disc having wood cutting knives thereon.
- 5. An apparatus for reducing the size of a wood member through gradual cutting and removal of wood elements therefrom, said apparatus comprising:
- a supporting member for supporting said wood member;
- a cutting member for cutting said wood member while said wood member is supported by said supporting member;
- a pushing plate including a leading pushing face, said pushing plate movable relative to said supporting member and said cutting member for pushing said wood member in a direction towards said cutting member so that said wood member can be cut by said cutting member; and
- a plurality of wood engaging spikes extending from said leading pushing face of said pushing plate for engaging said wood member while said wood member is being cut by said cutting member.
- 6. The apparatus as claimed in claim 5, wherein said cutting member is a cutting disk rotatable around an axis substantially parallel to said direction said pushing plate is pushed towards said cutting member.
- 7. A method for processing a wood "lilypad" member with a cutting disc rotating about a disc rotation axis, said method comprising the steps of:
- containing said lilypad member in an orientation with the grain of the lilypad member being substantially perpendicular to said cutting disc rotation axis; and
- cutting said lilypad members with said cutting disc while maintaining said lilypad member in said orientation.
- 8. A method for processing disklike pad members including end faces, each lilypad member having an average grain fiber length less that its diameter, said method including the steps of:
- A) dropping said lilypad members atop a supporting surface such that the end face of at least one of said lilypad members is in contact with said supporting surface;
- B) engaging at least one of said lilypad members with an engaging spike; and
- C) simultaneous with step "B", cutting said lilypad members with said cutting disc while said cutting disc is rotating about a disc rotation axis, with the grain of the lilypad members being substantially perpendicular to said disc rotation axis.
