Claims
- 1. For employment in a surgical operating room, the method of making available to a surgeon a quantity of a sterile medium, said method comprising the steps of:
- (a) covering a basin with a sterile drape and contouring the drape to the basin to form a drape receptacle within the basin;
- (b) extending the sterile drape over the top surface and sides of a cabinet on which said basin is secured;
- (c) placing a quantity of sterile liquid in the drape receptacle;
- (d) transferring thermal energy from within said cabinet to said basin to control the temperature of the liquid in said drape receptacle; and
- (e) manually adjusting a temperature controller disposed on the top surface of said cabinet beneath said sterile drape by manipulating said controls by hand with the drape disposed between the controller and the hand of the manipulator, thereby to permit manual control of thermal energy transfer in step (d).
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said sterile medium is heated liquid, and wherein step (d) comprises heating said basin.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein said controller is a power switch and wherein step (e) comprises manually actuating and deactuating said power switch to, respectively, enable and disable thermal energy transfer in step (d).
- 4. The method of claim 2 wherein said controller is a temperature adjustment controller, and wherein step (e) comprises manually adjusting said controller to vary the temperature of said heated liquid in said drape receptacle.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein said sterile medium is semi-frozen liquid having a slush-like consistency, and wherein step (d) comprises cooling said basin.
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein said controller is a power switch and wherein step (e) comprises selectively manually actuating and de-actuating said power switch to, respectively, enable and disable transfer of thermal energy in step (d).
- 7. The method of claim 5 wherein said controller is a temperature adjustment controller, and wherein step (e) comprises manually adjusting said controller to vary the temperature of said semi-frozen liquid in said drape receptacle.
- 8. The method of claim 1, further including the step of:
- disposing at least one centering indicium on said sterile drape at a location corresponding to the center of the drape receptacle to facilitate proper positioning of said drape relative to said basin during step (a).
- 9. Apparatus for providing a sterile surgical medium for use by a surgeon in a surgical operating room, said apparatus comprising:
- a housing having a top surface and sides;
- a basin supported on said top surface of said housing;
- a sterile drape disposed on said housing covering said top surface and extending along said sides, said drape being conformable to said basin to form a drape receptacle in said basin for receiving said sterile surgical medium in a liquid state, said drape being impervious to the sterile surgical medium in a liquid state;
- thermal energy transfer means disposed in said housing for controlling the temperature of said basin and the sterile surgical medium disposed in the drape receptacle; and
- at least one manually adjustable controller disposed on said top surface of said housing for controlling operation of said thermal energy transfer means, said controller being manually manipulable by an operator's hand with said drape disposed between said controller and the operator's hand.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein said sterile surgical medium is a liquid, and wherein said thermal energy transfer means is a heater for heating said liquid by heating said basin.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein said controller is a power switch for selectively actuating and de-actuating said heater.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein said controller is a temperature adjustment controller for selectively varying the temperature of said basin and the liquid in said drape receptacle.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein said thermal energy transfer means is a cooling unit for cooling said basin sufficiently to cool the sterile-surgical liquid therein to a slush-like consistency.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein said controller is a power switch for selectively actuating and de-actuating said cooling unit.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein said controller is a temperature adjustment controller for selectively varying the temperature of said basin and the medium in said drape receptacle.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein said sterile drape includes at least one centering indicium at a location corresponding to the center of said drape receptacle to facilitate proper placement of said drape receptacle relative to said basin.
- 17. For employment in a surgical operating room, the method of making available to a surgeon a quantity of sterile medium, said method comprising the steps of:
- (a) covering a basin with a sterile drape and contouring the drape to the basin to form a drape receptacle within the basin;
- (b) extending the sterile drape over the top surface and sides of a cabinet on which said basin in secured;
- (c) placing a quantity of sterile liquid in the drape receptacle;
- (d) transferring thermal energy from within said cabinet to said basin to control the temperature of the liquid in said drape receptacle; and
- (e) disposing at least one centering indicium on said sterile drape at a location corresponding to the center of said drape receptacle to facilitate proper positioning of said drape relative to said basin during step (a).
- 18. Apparatus for providing a sterile surgical medium for use by a surgeon in a surgical operating room, said apparatus comprising:
- a housing having a top surface and sides;
- a basin supported on said top surface of said housing;
- a sterile drape disposed on said housing covering said top surface and extending along said sides, said drape being conformable to said basin to form a drape receptacle in said basin to receive said sterile surgical medium in a liquid state, said drape being impervious to the sterile surgical medium in a liquid state, wherein said drape includes at least one centering indicium at a location corresponding to the center of said drape receptacle to facilitate proper placement of said drape relative to said basin; and
- thermal energy transfer means disposed in said housing for controlling the temperature of said basin and the sterile surgical medium disposed in the drape receptacle.
