Claims
- 1. An apparatus for providing dispatch service to an existing cellular telephone network, the apparatus comprising:
- a processor, coupled to a mobile switching center of the existing cellular telephone network, that generates and terminates control signals in response to signals received from a first communication device and at least a second communication device via the mobile switching center, the control signals establishing and managing a full duplex group call between the first communication device and the at least a second communication device;
- a conference bridge, coupled to the processor and the mobile switching center, that merges communications between the first communication device and the at least a second communication device during the full duplex group call responsive to bridge signals conveyed by the processor; and
- a database, coupled to the processor, that includes dispatch-related information for the first communication device and the at least a second communication device to allow the processor to generate the control signals.
- 2. A method for a dispatch controller that is located logically external to an existing telephone network to establish a dispatch call in the existing telephone network, the method comprising the steps of:
- receiving a dispatch call request from a first communication device via the existing telephone network, wherein the dispatch call request includes an identification of the first communication device and a target address of the dispatch controller;
- determining a group of target communication devices based on the dispatch call request; and
- establishing at least one communication link between the first communication device and the group of target communication devices via the existing telephone network to thereby establish the dispatch call.
- 3. A method for a communication device in an existing telephone network to participate in a full duplex dispatch communication, the method comprising the steps of:
- transmitting a dispatch call request to a dispatch controller that is located logically external to the existing telephone network via the existing telephone network, wherein the dispatch call request includes an identification of the communication device and an address of the dispatch controller;
- receiving a connect signal from the dispatch controller via the existing telephone network, the connect signal indicating establishment of a full duplex communication link between the dispatch controller and the communication device; and
- transmitting user information subsequent to receiving the connect signal.
- 4. The method of claim 3, further comprising the step of, prior to the step of transmitting user information, receiving call progress information from the dispatch controller via the full duplex communication link; and
- delaying transmission of the user information until the call progress information indicates clearance for transmission.
- 5. The method of claim 4, wherein the call progress information includes an indication of target communication devices that have full duplex communication links established with the dispatch controller.
- 6. The method of claim 3, wherein the existing telephone network includes a switching device and wherein the step of transmitting a dispatch call request comprises the step of transmitting a dispatch call request to a dispatch controller via the switching device of the existing telephone network.
- 7. The method of claim 6, wherein the existing telephone network comprises a cellular telephone network and wherein the switching device comprises a mobile switching center of the cellular telephone network.
- 8. The method of claim 6, wherein the existing telephone network comprises a public-switched telephone network and wherein the switching device comprises a switching service point of the public-switched telephone network.
- 9. A dispatch communication system comprising:
- at least one base site;
- a dispatch controller that provides control signals to a first communication device and at least a second communication device to at least establish a group call between the first communication device and the at least a second communication device;
- a mobile switching center, operably coupled between the dispatch controller and the at least one base site, wherein the control signals are conveyed via the mobile switching center and the at least one base site; and
- a database, coupled to the dispatch controller, that includes dispatch-related information for the first communication device to allow the dispatch controller to provide the control signals.
- 10. An apparatus for providing dispatch service to a cellular telephone network that includes a mobile switching center and at least one base site, the apparatus comprising:
- a dispatch controller, operably coupled to the mobile switching center, that provides control signals to a plurality of communication devices via the mobile switching center and the at least one base site to at least establish a group call between the plurality of communication devices; and
- a database, coupled to the dispatch controller, that includes dispatch-related information for at least one communication device of the plurality of communication devices to allow the dispatch controller to provide the control signals.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the dispatch controller comprises:
- a processor that generates and terminates the control signals in response to signals received from the plurality of communication devices via a telephony signaling interface;
- a conference bridge that merges communications between the plurality of communication devices during the group call responsive to bridge signals conveyed by the processor;
- a data bus that interconnects the processor, the telephony signaling interface, and the conference bridge; and
- a hardware interface coupling the existing telephone network to the data bus.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the dispatch-related information includes at least one group affiliation for the at least one communication device.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the dispatch-related information further includes a group affiliation for the plurality of communication devices.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the dispatch controller is further coupled to a short message service processor of the cellular telephone network.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein the group call is a short message.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the dispatch controller is further coupled to a switching service point of a public switched telephone network to support dispatch communications between radio communication devices and wireline communication devices.
- 17. An apparatus for providing dispatch service to a public-switched telephone network that includes a switching service point, the apparatus comprising:
- a dispatch controller, operably coupled to the switching service point, that provides control signals to a first communication device and at least a second communication device via the switching service point to at least establish a group call between the first communication device and the at least a second communication device; and
- a database, coupled to the dispatch controller, that includes dispatch-related information for the first communication device to allow the dispatch controller to provide the control signals.
- 18. An apparatus for providing dispatch service to an existing telephone network that includes a switching device, the switching device being used in the existing telephone network to establish and manage only one-to-one communications, the apparatus comprising:
- a dispatch controller, operably coupled to the switching device, that provides control signals to a plurality of communication devices via the switching device to at least establish a group call between the plurality of communication devices; and
- a database, coupled to the dispatch controller, that includes dispatch-related information for at least one of the plurality of communication devices to allow the dispatch controller to provide the control signals.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the existing telephone network comprises a cellular telephone network and wherein the switching device comprises a mobile switching center of the cellular telephone network.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the existing telephone network comprises a public-switched telephone network and wherein the switching device comprises a switching service point of the public-switched telephone network.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the dispatch controller comprises:
- a processor that generates and terminates the control signals in response to signals received from the plurality of communication devices via a telephony signaling interface;
- a conference bridge that merges communications between the plurality of communication devices during the group call responsive to bridge signals conveyed by the processor;
- a data bus that interconnects the processor, the telephony signaling interface, and the conference bridge; and
- a hardware interface coupling the existing telephone network to the data bus.
- 22. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the dispatch-related information includes at least one group affiliation for the at least one communication device.
- 23. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the dispatch-related information further includes a group affiliation for the plurality of communication devices.
- 24. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the group call is a full duplex voice call.
- 25. A method for a dispatch controller that is operably coupled to a switching device of an existing telephone network to at least establish a group call among a plurality of communication devices, the switching device being used in the existing telephone network to establish and manage only one-to-one communications, the method comprising the steps of:
- receiving a call request from a first communication device via the switching device, wherein the call request includes an identification of the first communication device and an address of the dispatch controller;
- determining a group of target communication devices based on the call request; and
- establishing at least one communication link between the first communication device and the group of target communication devices via the switching device to thereby establish the dispatch call.
- 26. The method of claim 25, wherein the existing telephone network comprises a cellular telephone network, wherein the switching device comprises a mobile switching center, and wherein the step of receiving comprises the step of receiving a call request from the first communication device via the mobile switching center of the cellular telephone network.
- 27. The method of claim 26, wherein the step of establishing comprises the steps of:
- establishing a full duplex communication link between the dispatch controller and the first communication device via the mobile switching center using standard telephony protocol; and
- establishing a full duplex communication link between the dispatch controller and at least one target communication device of the group of target communication devices via the mobile switching center using standard telephony protocol to thereby establish at least one full duplex communication link between the first communication device and the group of target communication devices.
- 28. The method of claim 27, wherein each step of establishing a full duplex communication link further comprises signaling between the dispatch controller and the mobile switching center via a Signaling System 7 (SS7) protocol.
- 29. The method of claim 27, wherein the standard telephony protocol is pulse code modulation.
- 30. The method of claim 27, wherein the step of establishing a full duplex communication link between the dispatch controller and the first communication device comprises the step of transmitting a connect signal to the first communication device via the mobile switching center.
- 31. The method of claim 27, wherein in the step of establishing a full duplex communication link between the dispatch controller and at least one target communication device comprises the steps of:
- transmitting a call request to each target communication device via the mobile switching center; and
- receiving a connect signal from each target communication device via the mobile switching center.
- 32. The method of claim 27, wherein the existing telephone network comprises a public switched telephone network, wherein the switching device comprises a switching service point, and wherein the step of receiving comprises the step of receiving a call request from the first communication device via the switching service point of the public switched telephone network.
- 33. The method of claim 25, wherein the existing telephone network comprises a cellular telephone network and wherein the step of receiving comprises the step of receiving a call request for short message service from the first communication device via a short message service processor of the cellular telephone network.
- 34. The method of claim 25, further comprising the steps of:
- receiving, subsequent to the step of establishing, a registration message from a target communication device of the group of target communication devices; and
- establishing a communication link between the target communication device and the first communication device via the existing telephone network to thereby allow the target communication device to join the dispatch call.
- 35. The method of claim 25, wherein the step of determining a group of target communication devices based on the call request comprises the step of determining a group of target communication devices based on the identification of the first communication device.
- 36. The method of claim 25, wherein the step of determining a group of target communication devices based on the call request comprises the step of determining a group of target communication devices based on the target address of the dispatch controller.
