- (c) a gas outlet in the upper region of said furnace for removing top gas;
- (d) means external to said furnace for cooling and cleaning removed top gas, said cooling and cleaning means communicating with said means for removing top gas; and
- (e) means communicating with said top gas cooling and cleaning means and with the interior of said furnace for returning cooled and cleaned top gas to said furnace in the lower region thereof.
- 2. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said electrodes are connected to oscillatable drive means.
- 3. Apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising at least one heat resistant alloy disc carried by each electrode.
- 4. Apparatus according to claim 3 wherein said electrode disc has teeth on its outer perihery whereby it is capable of acting as a cluster breaker.
- 5. Apparatus according to claim 4 wherein said electrode disc is a radially extending breaker segment extending from about 180 to about 270.degree. about the electrode.
- 6. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said second electrode is substantially parallel with said first electrode.
- 7. Apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising means for sensing the burden temperature.
- 8. Apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising means for venting excess cleaned and cooled top gas.
- 9. Apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising means for heating said cooled top gas and means communicating with said heating means for introducing heated gas into the bottom of said furnace.
- 10. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said furnace has an upper prereducing zone, a central reducing zone and a lower discharge zone, said apparatus further comprising a cooling zone between said reducing zone and said lower discharge zone, and a cooling recirculating circuit including means for introducing cooling gas into the bottom of said cooling zone, and means external to said furnace for cooling said removed cooling gas and means for recirculating cooled cooling gas to said furnace.
- 11. Apparatus according to claim 10 further comprising means in said circuit external to said furnace for cleaning cooling gas.
- 12. Apparatus for reducing particulate iron oxide to metallic iron with a solid reductant, said apparatus comprising:
- (a) a shaft furnace having a particle introducing means generally at the top thereof and a reduced particle removal means at the bottom thereof for establishing a gravitationally descending burden therein;
- (b) means for passing an electric current through said burden, including an external source of electric power;
- (c) a gas outlet in the upper region of said furnace for removing top gas;
- (d) means external to said furnace for cooling said removed top gas and a top gas scrubber having sludge collecting means for cleaning removed top gas, said cooling and cleaing means communicating with said gas outlet;
- (e) means communicating with said top gas cooling and cleaning means and with the interior of said furnace for returning cooled and cleaned top gas to said furnace in the lower region thereof; and
- (f) a sludge return line communicating with said scrubber and terminating in said furnace beneath the burden stockline for returning scrubber sludge to the interior of said furnace beneath the stockline.
- 13. Apparatus according to claim 12 wherein said scrubber is an oil scrubber.
- 14. Apparatus according to claim 12 wherein said means for cooling spent top gas is a water scrubber.
- 15. Apparatus according to claim 12 further comprising means for injecting cooled cleaned top gas into said sludge return line to assist in injecting the sludge into said shaft furnace.
- 16. Apparatus according to claim 12 wherein said means for passing electric current through said burden comprises horizontally opposed electrodes positioned in the walls of said furnace.
- 17. Apparatus according to claim 12 wherein said means for passing electric current through said burden comprises a first electrode positioned substantially horizontally through said burden near the bottom of said furnace and a second electrode positioned substantially horizontally through said burden near the top of said furnace.
