Claims
- 1. Apparatus for reducing particulate iron oxide to molten iron with a solid reductant, said apparatus comprising:
- a. a generally vertical shaft furnace having a particle introducing means at the top thereof for establishing a gravitationally descending burden therein, a molten iron collection chamber at the bottom thereof, and molten iron removal means;
- b. means for passing an electric current through said burden by electric resistance heating, including an exterior source of electric power;
- c. a gas outlet in the upper region of said furnace for removing top gas;
- d. means external to said furnace for cooling and cleaning removed top gas, said cooling and cleaning means communicating with said means for removing top gas;
- e. means communicating with said top gas cooling and cleaning means and with the interior of said furnace above said molten iron collection chamber for introducing said cooled and cleaned top gas to said furnace between said gas outlet and said molten iron collection chamber; and
- f. at least one oxy-fuel burner in said shaft furnace between said molten metal collection chamber and said means for introducing cooled and cleaned top gas to said furnace, whereby said oxy-fuel burner provides heat for melting of reduced iron as well as a supplemental source of hot reducing gas.
- 2. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said oxy-fuel burner is provided with a source of oxygen and a source of fuel selected from the group comprising pulverized coal, oil, tar, natural gas, oil scrubber sludge, reacted top gas and combinations thereof.
- 3. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said means for cooling and cleaning said removed top gas is a scrubber system comprising an oil scrubber followed by a water scrubber.
- 4. Apparatus according to claim 3 further comprising a sludge injection pipe in said furnace communicating with said oil scrubber for recirculating oil scrubber sludge into said furnace.
- 5. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said means for passing electric current through said burden comprises a hearth electrode positioned in said molten iron collection chamber and at least one second electrode positioned near the top of said furnace below the bottom of said particle introducing means.
- 6. Apparatus according to claim 5 wherein said second electrode is journaled for rotation.
- 7. Apparatus according to claim 5 wherein said second electrode is provided with at least one heat resistant alloy disc.
- 8. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said means for passing electric current through said burden comprises horizontally opposed heat resistant electrode plates in the furnace walls.
- 9. Apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising means communicating with said top gas cooling and cleaning means and with the interior of said furnace for heating at least a portion of said cleaned and cooled top gas.
