Claims
- 1. A method for regulating the distribution of ink in an undershot inking unit for a printing machine, said undershot inking unit comprising an ink fountain; an ink fountain roller cooperating with said ink fountain, whereby an ink film is generated on the surface of said ink fountain roller; an inking roller; an intermittent ductor roller for transferring said ink film to said inking roller as a result of oscillating movement between and periodic contact of said ductor roller with said ink fountain roller and said inking roller; drive means for oscillating said ductor roller including a cam follower roller engageable with rotatable cam means having variable predominant and subordinate circumferential contours and means for adjusting the effective circumferential lengths of said predominant and subordinate contours; said method comprising:
- rotating said cam means for oscillating said ductor roller between said ink fountain roller and said inking roller in direct proportion to the printing speed of said printing machine;
- controlling the rotational speed of the ink fountain roller independently of the printing speed of said printing machine; and
- adjusting the effective circumferential lengths of said predominant and subordinate contours of said rotatable cam means for varying the rotational contact angle defined as the relative angular proportion of each oscillation that the intermittent ductor roller is in contact with the ink fountain roller in direct proportion to changes in the printing speed of said printing machine while maintaining constant, in each oscillation of said ductor roller, the period of contact of said ductor roller with said ink fountain roller.
- 2. A method according to claim 1, wherein the rotational speed of the ink fountain roller is maintained at a constant speed.
- 3. A method according to claim 1, wherein the rotational speed of the ink fountain roller is driven stepwise at a constant stepping frequency and rotational speed in the step phase.
- 4. A method according to claim 1, wherein the method is applied as the printing machine is adjusted from a first printing speed to a second printing speed, wherein sid rotational contact angle has a first predetermined value corresponding to said first printing speed and a second predetermined value corresponding to said second printing speed, said method comprising the steps of:
- altering the rotational angle from said first predetermined value to said second predetermined value; and
- altering the printing machine speed from said first printing speed to said second printing speed.
- 5. An undershot inking unit for a printing machine, said undershot inking unit comprising:
- an ink fountain for supplying printing ink;
- an ink fountain roller communicating with said ink fountain;
- drive means for driving said ink fountain roller, whereby an ink film is generated on the surface of said ink fountain roller, wherein said ink fountain roller drive means are controllable independently of the printing speed of said printing machine;
- an intermittent ductor roller for oscillating movement between and periodic contact with said ink fountain roller and an inking roller to transfer said ink film from said ink fountain roller to said inking roller,
- drive means for oscillating said ductor roller including a cam follower roller engageable with rotatable cam means having variable predominant and subordinate circumferential contours; and
- means for adjusting the effective circumferential lengths of said predominant and subordinate contours for varying the rotational contact angle defined as the relative angular proportion of each oscillation that the intermittent ductor roller is in contact with the ink fountain roller in direct proportion to the printing speed of the printing machine while maintaining constant, in each oscillation of said ductor roller, the period of contact of said ductor roller with said ink fountain roller.
- 6. An undershot inking unit according to claim 6, wherein said rotatable cam means comprises:
- a first cam, said first cam having a first predominant circumferential contour and a first subordinate circumferential contour;
- a second cam, said second cam having a second predominant circumferential contour and a second subordinate circumferential contour, said second cam being coaxial with said first cam to thereby form a control cam having a cumulative predominant circumferential contour and a cumulative subordinate circumferential contour;
- said cam follower roller being connected to a pivotal lever arm journalling said intermittent ductor roller for traversing said control cam to thereby cause said intermittent ductor roller to periodically contact said ink fountain roller and said inking roller; and
- said adjusting means being operative for adjusting the rotational orientation of said first cam with respect to said second cam.
- 7. An undershot-inking unit according to claim 7, wherein said adjusting means comprises an adjusting gear and a servomotor operably connected to said adjusting gear.
- 8. An undershot inking unit according to claim 6, wherein said first cam has a first predominant circumferential contour, and an intermediate circumferential contour, said intermediate circumferential contour coinciding with said predominant second circumferential contour of said second cam, and said first cam has a first subordinate circumferential contour coinciding with said second subordinate circumferential contour of said second cam.
- 9. An undershot inking unit according to claim 5, wherein said ink fountain roller drive means comprises a motor and a drive, wherein said motor and said drive are capable of driving said ink fountain roller at a constant rotational speed.
- 10. An undershot inking unit according to claim 5, wherein said ink fountain roller drive means comprises a motor and a drive, wherein said motor and said drive are capable of driving said ink fountain roller stepwise at a controllable frequency and rotational speed.
