Claims
- 1. A method of removing body fluids from a patient and disposing of the body fluids, said method comprising the steps of
- (a) providing a molded suction canister including a molded-in drain,
- (b) providing a drainage device for automatically opening the molded-in drain and draining the contents of the suction canister,
- (c) collecting body fluids in the suction canister,
- (d) connecting the suction canister to the drainage device, and
- (e) operating the drainage device so that the drainage device opens the drain and drains the contents of the suction canister.
- 2. A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein step (a) includes the step of providing a suction canister comprising a chamber for collecting body fluids, said chamber being at least partially defined by a wall including the molded-in drain, the drain including a first wall portion defining a passageway having an open outer end, a second wall portion defining a blind inner end of said passageway, and a frangible wall portion connecting said first and second wall portions, and wherein step (e) includes disconnecting said second wall portion from said first wall portion to provide communication between said passageway and said chamber by breaking said frangible portion.
- 3. A method as set forth in claim 2 wherein step (a) further includes providing a container defining said chamber and having an open upper end and a bottom wall, said bottom wall including said wall portions.
- 4. A method as set forth in claim 2 wherein step (a) includes said passageway being upwardly tapered, wherein step (b) includes providing said drainage device with an upwardly tapered drain conduit, and wherein step (d) includes inserting the drain conduit into the passageway such that the drain conduit is sealingly wedged into the passageway.
- 5. A method as set forth in claim 2 wherein step (a) includes said second wall portion defining an outwardly opening, non-circular socket, and wherein step (e) includes breaking said frangible portion by inserting a tool into said socket and rotating said tool.
- 6. A method as set forth in claim 2 wherein said passageway has an axis, and wherein step (a) also includes molding said wall using mold parts movable relative to each other in a direction parallel to said axis, such that said frangible wall portion has a reduced thickness in a direction parallel to said axis.
- 7. A method as set forth in claim 6 wherein said thin portion has a radial dimension extending radially from said axis, and wherein said radial dimension is greater than said reduced thickness.
- 8. A method of removing body fluids from a patient and disposing of the body fluids, said method comprising the steps of
- (a) providing a container including a bottom wall having therein a drain,
- (b) providing a drainage device for automatically opening the drain and draining the contents of the container,
- (c) collecting body fluids in the container,
- (d) placing the container on the drainage device, and
- (e) operating the drainage device so that the drainage device opens the drain and drains the contents of the container.
- 9. A method as set forth in claim 8 wherein step (a) includes the step of providing said container with a chamber for collecting body fluids, said chamber being at least partially defined by said bottom wall including a frangible wall portion, and wherein step (e) includes breaking said frangible wall portion.
- 10. A method as set forth in claim 9 wherein step (a) includes integrally molding said bottom wall and said frangible wall portion.
- 11. A method as set forth in claim 9 wherein step (a) includes providing said bottom wall having therein an opening, and a plug which is separate from said bottom wall, which is inserted in said opening, and which includes said frangible wall portion.
- 12. A method as set forth in claim 9 wherein step (a) includes said drain including a first wall portion defining a passageway having an open outer end, a second wall portion defining a blind inner end of said passageway, and said frangible wall portion connecting said first and second wall portions, and wherein step (e) includes disconnecting said second wall portion from said first wall portion to provide communication between said passageway and said chamber by breaking said frangible portion.
- 13. A method as set forth in claim 12 wherein step (a) includes said passageway being upwardly tapered, wherein step (b) includes providing said drainage device with an upwardly tapered drain conduit, and wherein step (d) includes inserting the drain conduit into the passageway such that the drain conduit is sealingly wedged into the passageway.
- 14. A method as set forth in claim 12 wherein step (a) includes said second wall portion defining an outwardly opening, non-circular socket, and wherein step (e) includes breaking said frangible portion by inserting a tool into said socket and rotating said tool.
- 15. A method as set forth in claim 12 wherein said passageway has an axis, and wherein step (a) also includes molding said wall using mold parts movable relative to each other in a direction parallel to said axis, such that said frangible wall portion has a reduced thickness in a direction parallel to said axis.
- 16. A method as set forth in claim 15 wherein said thin portion has a radial dimension extending radially from said axis, and wherein said radial dimension is greater than said reduced thickness.
- 17. A method as set forth in claim 9 wherein step (e) includes breaking said frangible portion with a conduit and draining said chamber through said conduit.
- 18. A method as set forth in claim 17 wherein step (e) further includes said conduit being pointed and piercing said frangible portion with said conduit.
- 19. A method as set forth in claim 8 wherein step (a) includes providing said bottom wall having therein an opening, and a plug which is separate from said bottom wall, and which closes said opening.
- 20. A method as set forth in claim 19 wherein step (a) includes providing said plug inserted into said opening.
- 21. A method as set forth in claim 20 wherein step (a) includes providing said plug threaded into said opening.
- 22. A method as set forth in claim 21 wherein step (e) includes said drainage device unthreading said plug from said opening.
- 23. A method as set forth in claim 19 wherein step (e) includes said drainage device pushing said plug into said container.
