Claims
- 1. A bus system, comprising:
a bus; a first bus device having a guaranteed unique identifier installed by a manufacturer and a first physical address on the bus; a bus manager to map the guaranteed unique identifier to the physical address in automatic response to a configuration event causing a change in the physical address; and a second bus device having a second physical address on the bus and a map used by the bus manager to map the guaranteed unique identifier to the physical address; wherein the second bus device is a separate device from the first bus device and from the bus manager.
- 2. The bus system of claim 1, wherein the bus device is a separate device from the first bus device from the bus manager.
- 3. The bus system of claim 1, wherein the configuration event includes one of powering on a bus, resetting a bus, insertion of the first bus device, and removal of a second bus device.
- 4. The bus system of claim 1, wherein the bus manager comprises one of a workstation and a personal computer.
- 5. The bus system of claim 1, wherein the bus manager is to map the guaranteed unique identifier and the respective physical address into at least one of an array, a doubly linked list, a tree, a table, and a file.
- 6. The bus system of claim 1, wherein the map is bi-directional.
- 7. A bus system, comprising:
a bus; and a plurality of bus devices coupled to the bus, each of the plurality of bus devices having a guaranteed unique identifier installed by a manufacturer of said each of the plurality of bus devices and a physical address on the bus, a first one of the plurality of bus devices to act as a bus manager and to access a map in a second one of the plurality of bus devices to map each of the guaranteed unique identifiers to a respective physical address of one of the plurality of bus devices in automatic response to a configuration event causing a change in at least one of the physical addresses, wherein the first device is not the second device.
- 8. The bus system of claim 7, wherein the bus implements a network.
- 9. The bus system of claim 7, wherein the configuration event includes one of powering on a bus, resetting a bus, insertion of a first of the plurality of bus devices, and removal of a second of the plurality of bus devices.
- 10. The bus system of claim 7, wherein the bus manager is to map each of the guaranteed unique identifiers and a respective physical address into at least one of an array, a doubly linked list, a tree, a table, and a file.
- 11. The bus system of claim 7, wherein the map is bi-directional.
- 12. A computer readable program storage device encoded with instructions that, when executed by a computer, cause a bus manager in a first bus device to access a map in a second bus device to map each of a plurality of manufacturer-installed guaranteed unique identifiers to a respective physical address of one of a plurality of bus devices in a bus system in automatic response to a configuration event causing a change in at least one of the physical addresses, wherein the first device is not the second device and the first and second devices are on the first bus.
- 13. The program storage device of claim 12, wherein the configuration event includes one of powering on a bus, resetting a bus, insertion of a first of the plurality of bus devices, and removal of a second of the plurality of bus devices.
- 14. The program storage device of claim 12, wherein the bus system comprises:
a bus; and a plurality of bus devices coupled to the bus, each of the plurality of bus devices having the manufacturer-installed guaranteed unique identifier and a physical address, a particular one of the plurality of bus devices configured to act as a bus manager and to map each of the manufacturer-installed guaranteed unique identifiers to a respective physical address of one of the plurality of bus devices.
- 15. The program storage device of claim 12, wherein the encoded instructions, when executed, map the plurality of unique identifiers to the respective physical addresses bidirectionally.
