Claims
- 1. A method providing sync wiggle concealment for a composite video signal when viewed on a television, comprising the step of in each of a plurality of lines of the composite video signal, timeshifting the location of the horizontal sync signal relative to the beginning of the horizontal blanking interval, the amount of timeshifting in each successive line changing at a predetermined frequency.
- 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of further changing the amount of timeshifting in each successive line by a second predetermined frequency.
- 3. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of timeshifting the location of the vertical sync signal in at least some video fields relative to the beginning of the vertical blanking interval in that field, the amount of timeshifting in each successive field varying in a predetermined pattern.
- 4. The method of claim 3, the pattern being that of four successive video fields, wherein in the first field the vertical sync is timeshifted forward, in the second field the vertical sync is removed, in the third field the vertical sync is timeshifted backwards, and in the fourth field the vertical sync is removed.
- 5. An apparatus for concealing a composite video signal by sync wiggle when viewed on a television, comprising:
- a line counter for counting video lines of a field of the composite video signal; the line counter counting from the vertical blanking interval of the field;
- a memory holding a set of predetermined quantities by which in each line of the field the horizontal sync signal is to be timeshifted relative to the start of the horizontal blanking interval of that line, the memory reading out one of the set of quantities in response to each line counted by the line counter; and
- logic circuitry for generating new horizontal sync pulses in response to each read-out quantity for insertion into each video line in place of the horizontal sync signal originally present in that line.
- 6. A method for scrambling composite video signals by use of sampling comprising the steps of:
- generating a predetermined pattern;
- holding a value of the predetermined pattern once per field of the composite video signal; and
- timeshifting the horizontal synchronizing pulses of each horizontal line of the composite video signal relative to the active video portion of that line, wherein the amount of timeshifting in each line differs from that of the previous line by the held value of the predetermined pattern; wherein the amount of timeshifting in successive lines varies at frequency less than half of the video field rate.
- 7. The device of claim 5, further comprising a sync width control for setting a duration of the new horizontal sync pulses to be other than the nominal value.
