Claims
- 1. An apparatus for processing and authenticating a plurality of mail pieces, said apparatus including a postage accounting device having a serial number and a register for storing postage value, said apparatus comprising:
- means for processing a plurality of mail pieces for mailing including determining the postage required to mail said plurality of mail pieces,
- means for subtracting said postage required to mail said plurality of mail pieces form the value stored in said register;
- first printing means for printing upon a statement sheet a number representative of postage value residing within said postage accounting device after completion of the processing of a plurality of mail pieces and the serial number of said postage accounting device and
- second printing means for printing said number representative of postage value and said serial number as a combined number on said mail pieces, whereby the payment of postage for said mail pieces can be authenticated.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said first printing means include means for printing said serial number of said postage accounting device and the number of mail pieces processed upon said statement sheet.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said postage value register is an ascending register.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said postage value register is a descending register
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said second printing means includes means for printing said combined number as a combination of truncated portions of said serial number and said number representative of said postage value within said postage accounting device.
- 6. In a method of processing a plurality of mail pieces with a postage accounting device having a serial number and an ascending register, wherein a record of postage value applied is stored, so as to provide the ability to authenticate the mail, the steps comprising:
- processing for mailing a plurality of mail pieces; and
- printing upon each mail piece a number representing said postage value residing within said ascending register of said postage accounting device at the time each individual mail pieces is processed for mailing and said serial number of said postage accounting device as one number and
- determining the authenticity of the mail from said one number.
- 7. The method of claim 6 further comprising the sep of:
- printing said serial number of said postage accounting device on each mail piece.
- 8. The method of claim 7 further comprising the step of:
- printing said one number as a combination of a truncated number of at least one of said serial number and ascending register number.
