Claims
- 1. A particle sorting system, comprising:
a first duct for conveying a stream of suspended particles in a carrier liquid, comprising an inlet, a first outlet and a second outlet; a sensor for sensing a predetermined characteristic in a particle and one of a size and a velocity of a particle; a side channel in communication with the first duct; a sealed chamber positioned adjacent to the side channel, wherein the carrier fluid forms a meniscus in the side channel to separate the sealed chamber from the carrier fluid; and an actuator for modifying the pressure in the sealed chamber to deflect the meniscus when the sensor senses said predetermined characteristic, whereby the deflection of the meniscus causes the particle having said predetermined characteristic to flow into the second outlet while particles that do not have said predetermined characteristic flow into the first outlet.
- 2. The particle sorting system of claim 1, further comprising a buffer for absorbing pressure variations in the first duct.
- 3. The particle sorting system of claim 1, wherein the actuator comprises a source of pressurized gas.
- 4. The particle sorting system of claim 1, wherein the sealed chamber comprises a movable wall.
- 5. The particle sorting system of claim 4, wherein the actuator comprises a displacement actuator for moving the movable wall of the sealed chamber to modify the pressure in the sealed chamber.
- 6. The particle sorting system of claim 5, wherein the actuator comprises one of an electromagnetic actuator and a piezoelectric element.
- 7. A microfabricated particle sorting system, comprising:
a first duct for conveying a stream of suspended particles confined in a carrier liquid, comprising an inlet, a first outlet and a second outlet; a sensor for measuring a velocity of a particle; an actuator for causing a particle having a predetermined characteristic to flow into the second outlet while particles that do not have said predetermined characteristic flow into the first outlet.
- 8. A microfabricated particle sorting system, comprising:
a first duct for conveying a stream of suspended particles confined in a carrier liquid, comprising an inlet, a first outlet and a second outlet; a first sensor for sensing a predetermined characteristic in a particle; a second sensor for measuring a velocity of a particle; an actuator for causing the particle having said predetermined characteristic to flow into the second outlet while particles that do not have said predetermined characteristic flow into the first outlet.
- 9. The particle sorting system of claim 8, wherein the second sensor communicates with the actuator to determine when to cause the particle having the predetermined characteristic to flow into the second outlet.
- 10. The particle sorting system of claim 8, wherein the second sensor also measures the location of a particle.
- 11. A particle sorting system comprising:
an inlet duct through which flows a liquid containing particles having a predetermined characteristic and particles not having a predetermined characteristic wherein
a) the inlet duct branches into a microstructured system of a plurality of main channels which are operated in parallel and simultaneously fed with the liquid, each having a sorting module, two outlet channels and a switching region for separating particles having the predetermined characteristic into a first receiving channel from particles that do not have the predetermined characteristic, which flow into a second receiving channel; and b) each switch unit comprising at least one first sensor which detects and classifies the particles having the predetermined characteristic arranged on each main channel inside a sorting module, a second sensor which measures the velocity of the particles having the predetermined characteristic and a sorting actuator controlled by each said sensor arranged on each said switch unit, each said sorting actuator distributing particles having the predetermined characteristic to one of said two outlet channels and particles not having the predetermined characteristic to the other of said two outlet channels.
- 12. The particle sorting system of claim 11, wherein each of said two outlet channels on each main channel is connected to a separate summing channel for the particles having a predetermined characteristic and particles not having a predetermined characteristic selectively distributed to it.
- 13. A particle sorting system, comprising
a first duct for conveying a stream of suspended particles confined in a carrier liquid, comprising an inlet, a first outlet and a second outlet; a first sensor for sensing a predetermined characteristic in a particle; a second sensor for measuring a position and a velocity of a particle; and an actuator for distributing particles having the predetermined characteristic to the first outlet and particles not having the predetermined characteristic to second outlet.
- 14. A particle sorting system, comprising:
at least one primary sorting channels through which flows a stream of suspended particles confined in a carrier liquid, each primary sorting channel having a detection region for detecting a predetermined characteristic in a particle and a switching region for separating particles having the predetermined characteristic into a first receiving channel from particles that do not have the predetermined characteristic, which flow into a second receiving channel; an aggregation region for aggregating the particles having the predetermined characteristic from the first receiving channels, an enrichment region for adjusting a volume of carrier liquid surrounding the particles having the predetermined characteristic after the particles having the predetermined characteristic are aggregated; and at least one secondary sorting channel in series with the plurality of parallel primary sorting channels for collecting the selected particles from the plurality of first outlet channels and separating particles in the secondary sorting channel having the predetermined characteristic from other particles in the secondary sorting channel.
- 15. The system of claim 14, wherein the enrichment region removes excess carrier fluid from the particles having the predetermined characteristic.
- 16. The system of claim 14, wherein said at least one primary sorting channel comprises a plurality of parallel primary sorting channels.
- 17. The system of claim 14, wherein the enrichment region comprises:
an enrichment channel intersecting one of said receiving channels; and a membrane separating the enrichment channel from said receiving channel.
- 18. The system of claim 14, wherein the enrichment region comprises:
an enrichment channel intersecting said aggregation region; and a membrane separating the enrichment channel from the aggregation region.
- 19. The system of claim 14, wherein the enrichment region comprises:
an enrichment channel intersecting the secondary sorting channel; and a membrane separating the enrichment channel from the secondary sorting channel.
- 20. The system of claim 14, wherein the detection region of each primary channel comprises a sensor for measuring a velocity of a particle in the corresponding primary channel.
- 21. The system of claim 14, further comprising hydration device for adding secondary carrier fluid to the particles after the enrichment region.
- 22. The system of claim 15, further comprising a recycling channel connecting the enrichment region to the primary sorting channel for introducing said removed sheath fluid into the primary sorting channel.
- 23. A particle sorting system, comprising:
a plurality of parallel primary sorting channels through which flows a stream of suspended particles confined in a carrier liquid, each primary sorting channel having a detection region for detecting a predetermined characteristic in a particle and a velocity of a particle having the predetermined characteristic and a switching region for separating particles having the predetermined characteristic into a first receiving channel from particles that do not have the predetermined characteristic, which flow into a second receiving channel, wherein the primary sorting channels have a first separation distance in the detection region that is less than a second separation distance in the switching region.
- 24. A method of sorting particles, comprising:
conveying a stream of suspended particles confined in a carrier liquid through a first duct having an inlet, a first outlet and a second outlet, sensing a predetermined characteristic of a particle in the stream; producing a signal when the predetermined characteristic is sensed; measuring a velocity of a particle having said predetermined characteristic; and distributing particles having the predetermined characteristic to the first outlet and particles not having the predetermined characteristic to the second outlet, based on the steps of sensing the predetermined characteristic and measuring the velocity.
- 25. A method of sorting particles, comprising
conveying a plurality of streams suspended particles confined in a carrier liquid through a plurality of parallel primary sorting, each primary sorting channel having a detection region for detecting a predetermined characteristic in a particle and a switching region for separating particles having the predetermined characteristic into a first receiving channel from particles that do not have the predetermined characteristic, which flow into a second receiving channel; separating particles having the predetermined characteristic from particles that do not have the predetermined characteristic aggregating the particles having the predetermined characteristic from the first receiving channels in an aggregation region, adjusting a volume of carrier liquid surrounding the particles having the predetermined characteristic after the particles having the predetermined characteristic are aggregated; conveying the selected particles having the predetermined characteristic through at least one secondary sorting channel in series with the plurality of parallel primary sorting channels; and separating particles in the secondary sorting channel having the predetermined characteristic from other particles in the secondary sorting channel.
