Claims
- 1. A method of forming a multi-layer stack from a substantially continuous imbricated copy stream, said stream comprising a plurality of non-self-supporting planar copies in overlapped configuration, said method comprising placing an initial separator sheet on a support, feeding a continuous row of said copies to a receiver to form an initial predetermined length in said overlapped configuration onto said initial separator sheet, thereby forming a substantially flat, imbricated, initial layer of said multi-layer stack, the initial length of said initial layer being in said overlapped configuration, placing at least one succeeding separator sheet directly on said initial layer, continuing to feed said copies to said receiver to form at least one succeeding predetermined length of said copies, and transferring at least one said succeeding length onto each said succeeding separator sheet.
- 2. A method of retrieving at least one row of copies formed from the stack of claim 1, said method comprising moving a separator tray beneath the uppermost said separator sheet, lowering blocking partitions to an extended position between adjacent said rows, supporting said copies by their outer edges, lifting said copies from said stack, withdrawing said separator sheet from beneath said rows, and releasing said copies onto a receiver.
- 3. The multi layer stack which is the product of the method of claim 2.
- 4. The multi layer stack which is the product of the method of claim 2.
- 5. An apparatus for forming a stack of rows of imbricated copies from a copy stream, which stream comprises a substantially continuous plurality of imbricated, flexible planar copies, said apparatus comprising
- a receiver to receive an imbricated predetermined length of said imbricated copy stream, said stream having two sides parallel to said length,
- a transfer device which contacts said length only at or adjacent both of said sides,
- said transfer device for transferring an entire said predetermined length from said receiver onto a separator sheet which is on a preceding layer of said stack, thereby forming a layer of a multi-layer stack of overlapping copies.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said transfer device is adapted to transfer said predetermined length onto said separator sheet to form a single said layer, said separator sheet being supported directly by said preceding layer.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said receiver comprises an intermediate conveyor which is narrower than said copy stream
- 8. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said transfer device comprises a shuttle assembly for lifting said predetermined length of said copy stream from said receiver.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 5 comprising a retriever for taking said predetermined length from said stack and delivering said length to a conveyor to re-form a continuous copy stream thereon.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said transfer device comprises a movable shuttle assembly for lifting said copy stream from said receiver and moving said copy stream to said separator sheet.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein said shuttle assembly further comprises a gate movable to a position beneath a portion of said copy stream to support said copy stream when said shuttle is moved to said locator and shiftable to a second position out from beneath said copy stream to deposit said stream on said stack.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein said receiver comprises an input conveyor, an intermediate conveyor, and an output conveyor.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein there are blocking partitions on said shuttle assembly and between adjacent rows of said copy stream when said stream is on said separator sheet, said partitions being adapted for vertical movement between an extended position, wherein said partitions are in contact with said separator sheet, and a withdrawn position, wherein said partitions are out of contact with said separator sheet and are above the copy stream which is on said receiver.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said transfer device has a first position, in which it is adapted to lift said predetermined length of said copy stream from said receiver, and a second position in which it is adapted to deposit said copy stream on said separator sheet.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said copy stream has two sides parallel to said predetermined length, said transfer device adapted to contact said stream only at or adjacent both said sides.
