Claims
- 1. A method of taking a flowing sample of an at least substantially ideal gas at least substantially isothermally flowing through a line, which flowing sample is constantly proportionate to the flow rate of said flowing gas, said method comprising:
- a) passing said gas flowing through said line through a first flow restriction in said line;
- b) drawing a flowing sample of said gas from said line at a point upstream of said first flow restriction into a sample line;
- c) passing said flowing sample of said gas in said sample line through a second flow restriction in said sample line, the interior of said line, said first flow restriction, said sample line, and said second flow restriction each being substantially cylindrical, the interior diameter of each of the four elements above being sequentially identified by the following symbols: D.sub.15, d.sub.15, D.sub.12, and d.sub.12 ;
- d) equalizing the pressures downstream of said first and second restrictions; and
- e) d.sub.12 being much less than D.sub.15, d.sub.15 and D.sub.12 so that the flow through said line divided by the flow through said sample line is about (0.747) (d.sub.15 /d.sub.12).sup.2 /[1-(d.sub.15 /D.sub.15).sup.2 ].sup.1/2.
- 2. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein said equalizing of downstream pressures is achieved by detecting the difference between said pressures and operating a valve in said sample line in a direction to eliminate said difference.
- 3. An apparatus for taking a constantly proportional flowing sample of an at least substantially ideal gas at least substantially isothermally flowing through a line having a first flow restriction therein, said apparatus comprising:
- means for drawing a flowing sample of gas from said line at a point upstream of said first flow restriction into a sample line;
- a second flow restriction within said sample line, said second flow restriction being much smaller than said first flow restriction so that the flow through said line divided by the flow through said sample line is about
- (0.747)(d.sub.15 /d.sub.12).sup.2 /[1-(d.sub.15 /D.sub.15).sup.2 ].sup.1/2
- wherein said lines and restrictions are all substantially cylindrical and where d.sub.15 is the interior diameter of said first flow restriction, d.sub.12 is the interior diameter of said second flow restriction, and D.sub.15 is the interior diameter of said line; and
- means for equalizing the pressures downstream of said first and second restrictions.
- 4. An apparatus as recited in claim 3, wherein said line flow has a Reynolds number that exceeds 100,000.
- 5. An apparatus as recited in claim 3 wherein said means for equalizing the pressures downstream of said first and second restrictions comprises a valve in said sample line.
- 6. An apparatus as recited in claim 5, wherein said equalizing of downstream pressures is achieved by detecting the difference between said pressures and operating said valve in a direction to eliminate said difference.
