Claims
- 1. In a method of thermoforming parts from preheated sheet material using mold cavities each having a lip projecting therefrom, the improvement comprising drawing regions of said sheet material opposite each lip away by the brief application of vacuum pressure just prior to the forming of said parts.
- 2. The method according to claim 1 wherein said thermoforming method includes the step of advancing a plug assist from a retracted position into said sheet material and wherein said improvement further includes the step of drawing said sheet material against the top of each plug assist in a retracted position thereof when drawing said sheet material away from said mold cavities.
- 3. The method according to claim 2 wherein each plug assist is disposed in a respective sealed well in a lower tooling assembly and wherein said improvement comprises the steps of communicating each sealed well with a vacuum source after a preheated sheet is advanced over said wells.
- 4. The method according to claim 3 wherein said thermoforming process includes the step of clamping regions of said preheated sheet with clamping rings preparatory to forming said parts by movement together of upper and lower platens, and said sheet material is drawn away from said mold cavity prior to clamping of said sheet material by said clamping rings.
- 5. The method according to claim 4 wherein said wells are subsequently pressurized after said clamping rings are engaged and said plug assists are advanced.
- 6. The method according to claim 5 wherein said mold cavities are subsequently placed in communication with said vacuum source.
- 7. The method according to claim 4 wherein heated sheet material is formed with a dimple lying within each clamping ring and against the top of each plug assist.
- 8. A thermoforming apparatus comprising:
an upper platen; a mold cavity upper tooling assembly formed with one or more down facing mold cavities, said mold cavities each having a lip projecting down from said upper tooling assembly; a third platen; a spider plate disposed below said lower tooling assembly and connected to each plug assist; an actuator for advancing and retracting said spider plate; a clamping ring extending around each well and engageable with preheated sheet material advanced over said lower tooling assembly upon relative movement of said upper and lower platens towards each other to cause each of said clamping rings to clamp a region of said heated sheet material against said upper tool assembly and outside of said mold cavity lips; a vacuum source; a valve and connection between said vacuum source and each of said one or more wells controllably allowing said vacuum source to be placed in communication with each of said sealed wells; and a machine control momentarily operating said valve to establish communication between said vacuum source and each of said one or more wells when said heated sheet material overlies said wells and clamping rings but prior to clamping of said sheet material by said clamping rings.
- 9. The apparatus according to claim 8 further including a pressure source and a valve and connection associated therewith to each well, and wherein said one or more wells is connected to said pressure source by said machine control operating said valve associated therewith after said clamping rings are engaged and said plug assists advanced.
- 10. The apparatus according to claim 9 wherein said vacuum source is connected to said one or more mold cavities after said plug assists are advanced by operation of said machine control.
