Claims
- 1. For use in conducting measurement operations in drill holes, the method of obtaining useful downhole information by selectively filtering data signals carrying said information from mixed signals resulting from a mixture of said data signals and of interfering signals which tend to obscure said information, said data signals being arranged in a coded sequence of individual signals, said sequence being arranged in accordance with a code representing said useful information and wherein said individual signals have a characteristic shape, said method comprising:
- receiving said mixed signals;
- producing control signals which represent said shape; and
- converting said mixed signals and said control signals into resultant signals representative of said data signals wherein in said resultant signals the obscuring effect of said interfering signals is diminished.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of converting comprises:
- a) introducing said mixed signals and said control signals into a computer means; and
- b) operating said computer means with said mixed signals and said control signals applied to an input of said computer means, and deriving from said computer means said resultant signals.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein said characteristic shape represents the variation of said individual signals in a time domain.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein said control signals are approximations of said characteristic shapes.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of converting comprises:
- introducing said control signals into the memory of a digital filter;
- operating said digital filter with said mixed signals applied to its input and said control signals applied to its memory, and
- deriving from said digital filter said resultant signals.
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein said digital filter performs a cross correlation of said mixed signals and said control signals.
- 7. The method of claim 5 wherein said digital filter is a matched filter.
- 8. The method of claim 5 wherein said digital filter is a pulse shaping filter.
- 9. For use in conducting measurement operations in drill holes, the method of obtaining useful information by selectively filtering data signals carrying said information from mixed signals representing a mixture of said data signals and of interfering signals which tend to obscure said information, wherein said interfering signals have characteristic shape, said method comprising:
- receiving said mixed signals with a single pressure transducer located at a single location;
- producing control signals representing said characteristic shape; and
- converting said mixed signals and said control signals into resultant signals representative of said useful information.
- 10. For use in conducting measurement operations in drill holes, the method of obtaining useful information by selectively filtering data signals carrying said information from mixed signals representing a mixture of said data signals and of interfering signals which tend to obscure said information, said data signals being arranged in a coded sequence of individual signals, said sequence being arranged in accordance with a code representing said useful information and wherein said individual signals and said interfering signals have characteristic shapes respectively, one of said characteristic shapes being distinguishable from the other characteristic shape, said method comprising:
- receiving said mixed signals;
- producing two control signals representing said characteristic shapes; and
- converting said mixed signals and said two control signals into resultant signals representative of said useful information.
- 11. An apparatus for obtaining useful information from a relatively inaccessible location in an earth borehole, said apparatus comprising:
- generating means at said relatively inaccessible location for generating data signals carrying said useful information, said data signals being transmitted to a relatively accessible location near the earth's surface as a succession of individual signals having a characteristic shape, said data signals transmitted to said relatively accessible location being obscured by interfering signals;
- receiving means at said relatively accessible location for receiving said data signals and said interfering signals and for producing mixed signals representing a mixture of said received signals;
- controlling means for producing control signals representative of said characteristic shape; and
- information producing means for receiving at its input said mixed signals and said control signals and for translating said received signals into output signals representing said useful information.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein said information producing means comprises a computer means for receiving at its input said mixed signals and said control signals and for translating said received signals into output signals representing said information; and
- an indicator for producing an indication of said output signals.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein said information producing means comprises a digital filter for receiving said mixed signals and having a memory whereby said control signals are stored therein, said digital filter providing by the use of said memory output signals representing said information.
- 14. An apparatus for obtaining useful information from a relatively inaccessible location in an earth borehole, said apparatus comprising:
- generating means at said relatively inaccessible location for generating data signals carrying said useful information, said data signals being transmitted to a relatively accessible location and wherein they are obscured by interfering signals, said interfering signals being characterized by a distinguishable shape;
- receiving means at said relatively accessible location for receiving said data signals and said interfering signals and for producing mixed signals representing a mixture of said received signals, said receiving means comprising a single transducer located at a single location;
- controlling means for producing control signals representative of said distinguishable shape; and
- information producing means for receiving at its input said mixed signals and said control signals and for translating said received signals into output signals representing said useful information.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein said interfering signals and said data signals each have characteristic patterns, one of said characteristic patterns being distinguishable from the other characteristic pattern wherein said controlling means produces two control signals representative of said characteristic patterns and wherein said information producing means receives said mixed signals and said two control signals and translates said received signals into output signals representing said useful information.
- 16. For use in conducting measurement operations in drill holes, the method of obtaining useful downhole information by selectively filtering data signals carrying said information from mixed signals resulting from a mixture of said data signals and of interfering signals, said data signals being arranged in a coded sequence of individual signals, said sequence being arranged in accordance with a code representing said useful information and wherein said individual signals have a characteristic shape, said method comprising:
- a) introducing said mixed signals into an input of a digital filter;
- b) selecting the memory function of said digital filter so that using said input and said memory function the output of said digital filter produces output signals representative of an approximation of said individual signals; and
- c) producing an indication of said useful information from said individual signals.
- 17. The method of claim 16 wherein the step of selecting the memory function of said digital filter is accomplished by applying the method of least squares.
- 18. The method of claim 16 wherein the memory function is controllable and is selected so as to maximize the ratio of the magnitude of said output signals to the magnitude of said mixed signals.
