Claims
- 1. A contaminated water treatment apparatus for treating contaminated water such as stormwater and wastewater, the apparatus comprising a substantially water impermeable treatment chamber having an open top, a sidewall, and defining a bottom surface, said chamber positionable below ground level with the open top extending above ground level in communication with the atmosphere and for receiving the contaminated water to be treated, said treatment chamber including a filter media comprising a layer of mulch overlying a soil mixture that include a non-organic matrix material and a material that includes organic matter.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising live plant material growing in the filter media.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said non-organic matrix material is substantially 70% (by volume) of the soil mixture.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein the remaining substantially 30% portion of the soil mixture is top soil that includes organic matter.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein said top soil is a high grade agricultural-type sandy loam top soil.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein the remaining substantially 30% portion of the soil mixture is comprised primarily of organic material.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the organic material is approximately 95% (by volume) of organic material with the remainder being top soil.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said treatment chamber includes at least one opening in a bottom portion of the chamber through which the treated water passes.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein said bottom surface of the chamber is a water impermeable bottom surface with a plurality of openings therethrough.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 8 further comprising a perforated pipe within said chamber in communication with said at least one opening.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein said perforated pipe is positioned substantially horizontally adjacent the bottom of said chamber, the bottom of said chamber being a water impermeable bottom surface, said opening in a sidewall adjacent said bottom surface.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11 further comprising a vertical pipe extending from the open top to the substantially horizontally positioned perforated pipe.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said non-organic matrix material is substantially 50% to 70% (by volume) of the soil mixture and the material that includes organic matter is the remaining portion of the soil mixture.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein said remaining portion of the soil mixture is top soil that includes organic matter.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 13 where the remaining portion of the soil mixture comprises primarily organic material.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein the organic material is approximately 95% (by volume) of organic material with the remainder being top soil.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein said non-organic matrix is sand.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein said non-organic matrix is aggregate.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein said organic material is primarily mulch.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said treatment chamber defines a contaminated water ponding area between said open top and said mulch layer.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said live plant material is non-wetland soil plant material.
- 22. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said water treatment chamber is a shallow chamber having a depth substantially less than the side-to-side dimension of the open top.
- 23. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the ratio between said water treatment chamber cross-sectional area and its depth is approximately 10-40 to 1.
- 24. The apparatus of claim 22 wherein said water treatment chamber is a cylindrically-shaped concrete structure.
- 25. A system for treating contaminated water such as stormwater and wastewater comprising a plurality of water treatment apparatuses as claimed in claim 1 positioned at various locations in the ground in a field area to be treated.
- 26. A two-stage water treatment system for treating contaminated water such as stormwater and wastewater, each stage comprising a substantially water impermeable treatment chamber with one stage positionable above the other stage, each of said two stages positionable below ground such that the bottommost treatment chamber is an anaerobic treatment chamber and the upper treatment chamber is an aerobic treatment chamber, the upper treatment chamber having sidewalls that extend above ground level with an open top in communication with the atmosphere and for receiving the contaminated water to be treated, wherein the upper treatment chamber includes a bottom wall defining an opening to communicate with the lower treatment chamber, wherein water treated by the upper chamber passes into the lower chamber for treatment within the lower chamber, said lower chamber further comprising an opening to enable the treated water to flow out of the lower treatment chamber after treatment.
- 27. The two-stage treatment system of claim 26 wherein said aerobic upper chamber includes a filter media comprising a layer of mulch overlying a soil mixture that includes a non-organic matrix material and a material that includes organic matter.
- 28. The two-stage treatment system of claim 27 further comprising live plant material growing in the filter media.
- 29. The two-stage treatment system of claim 26 wherein said lower treatment chamber is substantially filled with water.
- 30. The two-stage treatment system of claim 29 wherein the lower treatment chamber includes a plurality of baffles to divide the lower treatment chamber into separate areas, each baffle including an opening to enable water to be treated to pass through the separate areas so as to lengthen the treatment time of the contaminated water within the lower treatment chamber.
- 31. The two-stage treatment system of claim 26 wherein the upper treatment chamber includes a substantially horizontal pipe adjacent the bottom thereof, said pipe including a plurality of openings to receive water treated in the upper chamber, said horizontal pipe communicating with a vertical pipe extending into the lower chamber, wherein said water treated in the upper chamber passes into the horizontal pipe and downward through the vertical pipe into the lower chamber.
- 32. The two-stage treatment system of claim 31 wherein said vertical pipe includes a vertical pipe extension extending upward through the upper chamber and ending adjacent the top of the upper chamber.
