Claims
- 1. A method of treating tissue with an intracavity doubled solid state laser, said laser having a neodymium doped solid state gain medium comprising of steps of:
- optically exciting the gain medium with light pulses having a duration between 0.5 and 10.0 milliseconds to generate frequency doubled output pulses having a duration between 0.5 milliseconds and 10 milliseconds and a wavelength of 532 nm; and
- irradiating the tissue with said output pulses at a fluence level in excess of 1 joules/cm.sup.2.
- 2. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein said pulses have a duration between 5.0 and 10 milliseconds.
- 3. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein said fluence level is in excess of 10 joules/cm.sup.2.
- 4. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein said fluence level is between 10 and 20 joules/cm.sup.2.
- 5. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein said pulses have a repetition rate greater than 1 Hz.
- 6. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein said gain medium is optically exciting with a flashlamp.
- 7. An apparatus for treating tissue comprising:
- a resonant cavity;
- a neodymium doped solid state gain medium located within the resonant cavity for generating an output having a fundamental frequency;
- a light source for exciting the gain medium;
- a non-linear crystal located within the cavity for doubling the fundamental frequency output of the gain medium; and
- means for energizing the light source with pulses having a duration between 0.5 and 10.0 milliseconds to generate frequency doubled output pulses having a duration between 0.5 milliseconds and 10 milliseconds and having an energy of at least 0.5 joules per pulse.
- 8. An apparatus as recited in claim 7 further including optical means for focusing the fundamental frequency output of the gain medium at a location within the resonant cavity and wherein the non-linear crystal is positioned at that location.
- 9. An apparatus as recited in claim 7 wherein said gain medium is neodymium YAG.
- 10. An apparatus as recited in claim 7 wherein said non-linear crystal is KTP.
- 11. An apparatus as recited in claim 7 wherein said pulses have a repetition rate greater than 1 Hz.
- 12. An apparatus as recited in claim 7 wherein said output pulses have a duration between 1.0 milliseconds and 10 milliseconds.
- 13. An apparatus as recited in claim 7 wherein said output pulses have a duration between 5.0 milliseconds and 10 milliseconds.
- 14. An apparatus as recited in claim 7 wherein said light source is a flashlamp.
