Claims
- 1. A method for trimming leads of electronic devices having a body portion and a plurality of leads extending from the body portion in rows on opposite sides thereof consisting of the steps of passing devices through a channel defined by confronting edges of a pair of spaced shear plates, holding a device with the rows confronting and adjacent the shear plates, applying a lead trimming force to shear leads to the inner confronting faces thereof to effect a cutting action from inboard of the channel outwardly toward the edges of the shear plates.
- 2. A method for trimming leads of electronic devices having a body portion and a plurality of leads extending from the body portion in rows on opposite sides thereof comprising the steps of:
- placing said devices on a device support for travel through a plurality of stations disposed along said support;
- singularizing said devices such that only one device at a time travels to stations disposed downstream along said support;
- stopping said device in a trimming station between spaced edges of shear plates defining a channel therebetween;
- forcibly restraining the top of said body portion and outer lead sides at the trimming station;
- applying a lead trimming force to shear leads to the inner confronting faces thereof to effect a cutting action from inboard of the channel outwardly toward the edges of the shear plates; and
- releasing said device from said trimming station so that said device may continue its travel along said support.
- 3. A method as claimed in claim 1 including the step of engaging the leads on opposite sides by a snubbing mechanism having resilient members engaging the opposing leads during the trimming operation.
- 4. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the leads are sheared sequentially.
- 5. A method as claimed in claim 4 wherein the sequential cutting is produced by beveled cutting blades.
