Claims
- 1. An implantable device for changing the spatial relationship between first and second bone segments, the device comprising a wedge member having thin and thick edges and a side surface extending from one end of the thin edge along the thick edge to an opposite end of the thin edge, wherein the wedge member is made of a biocompatible metallic material and has a open cellular structure to provide cavities in which bone can grow through.
- 2. The device of claim 1 wherein the wedge member is made of tantalum.
- 3. The device of claim 1 wherein the wedge member is made of stainless steel.
- 4. The device of claim 1 wherein a bone growth promoting material is disposed on the wedge member.
- 5. The device of claim 1 wherein the wedge member includes a compartment for holding bone growth promoting material.
- 6. The device of claim 1 wherein at least some of the cavities contain a bone growth promoting material.
- 7. The device of claim 1 further including a screw member extending through at least a portion of the wedge member and having an end portion extending beyond the thin edge and threads on the end portion for engaging bone.
- 8. The device of claim 1 wherein the side surface has a configuration corresponding to the configuration of a portion of an outer side surface of the bone.
- 9. The device of claim 1 further includes fastener means for fixedly connecting the wedge member with the bone.
- 10. The device of claim 9 wherein the fastener means includes at least one screw.
- 11. The device of claim 9 wherein the fastener means includes a first connector configured and dimensioned to connect the wedge member to the first bone segment and a second connector configured and dimensioned to connect the wedge member to the second bone segment.
- 12. An implantable device for changing the spatial relationship between first and second bone segments, the device comprising a wedge member having thin and thick edges and a side surface extending from one end of the thin edge along the thick edge to an opposite end of the thin edge, wherein the wedge member is made of tantalum and has a open cellular structure providing cavities in which bone can grow through.
- 13. The device of claim 12 wherein the wedge member is coated with a bone growth promoting material.
