Claims
- 1. A method for vertically scrambling video signals comprising the steps of:
- timeshifting the composite horizontal lines of the video signal relative to the vertical sync signal in each video field, wherein the composite horizontal lines in each successive field are timeshifted by a different amount;
- encrypting an indication of the amount of timeshifting; and
- inserting the indication into the video signal.
- 2. A system for vertically scrambling video signals, comprising:
- means for timeshifting the composite horizontal lines of the video signal relative to the vertical sync signal of that field, wherein the composite horizontal lines in each field are timeshifted by an amount different from the amount of timeshifting of the composite horizontal lines in a previous video field; and
- an encryptor for inserting into the video signal an encrypted indication of the amount of timeshifting.
- 3. The system of claim 2, wherein the means for timeshifting comprises:
- a plurality of series connected delays each capable of storing one horizontal video line; and
- a random number generator for determining which of the plurality of delays the horizontal lines in a particular video field are to be passed through, thereby varying the amount of timeshifting in each successive field.
- 4. A system for vertically scrambling video signals, comprising:
- means for timeshifting the horizontal lines of the video signal relative to the vertical sync signal of that field, wherein the horizontal lines in each field are timeshifted by an amount different from the amount of timeshifting of the horizontal lines in a previous video field; and
- an encryptor for inserting into the video signal an encrypted indication of the amount of timeshifting;
- wherein the means for timeshifting comprises:
- a plurality of series connected delays each capable of storing one horizontal video line, and
- a random number generator for determining which of the plurality of delays the horizontal lines in a particular video field are to be passed through, thereby varying the amount of timeshifting in each successive field.
- 5. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of:
- generating a random number for determining the timeshifting of the composite horizontal lines of the video signal relative to the vertical sync signal in each video field.
