Claims
- 1. A method for axially aligning respective adjacent opposing end faces of a first and a second shaft segment, respectively, of a steam turbine rotor to be welded together, each of said adjacent opposing end faces including a mutually mateable joint face, one of the joint faces including a crushable annular lip axially extending from said one joint face, the method comprising the steps of:
- matingly engaging said respective joint faces with at least an axial component of force, so as to form an annular groove between the respective end faces and thereby placing said crushable annular lip under an axially compressive force;
- rotatably supporting said first and second shaft segments, respectively axially outboard the respective joint face;
- adjustably supporting at least one of said shaft segments axially intermediate the respective adjacent opposing end face and the respective rotatable support;
- measuring the force at said axially intermediate position, said force counteracting the weight of said shaft segments;
- measuring the axial extent of the annular groove at a plurality of circumferential and radially equidistant locations; and
- minimizing the variance between the axial measurements of said annular groove by changing the elevation of said one shaft segment at said axially intermediate position thereby affecting the force at said axially intermediate position.
- 2. The method as in claim 1 further comprising:
- heating said first and second shaft segments adjacent said groove; and
- welding said adjacent end faces together by applying weldment in said annular groove while substantially maintaining the force measured which miminizes the variance between the axial measurements of said annular groove.
- 3. The method as in claim 2, further including the step of rotating said first and second shaft segments and applying said weld in singular, circumferential sweeps.
- 4. The method as in claim 1, further including the step of placing said crushable lip under an amount of axially compressive force such that thermal contraction of any weld to be disposed in said annular groove does not substantially affect the integrity of said any weld and does reduce the axial extent of said crushable lip.
