Claims
- 1. A method of treating a plastic part without using adhesion promoters, comprising the steps of:
providing a burner assembly, said burner assembly including a discharge tube that has an end portion aligned on an axis adjacent a face of said burner assembly, said burner assembly further including at least one flame jet that generally encloses said discharge tube adjacent said burner assembly face; operatively coupling a control device to said burner assembly, said control device being adapted to cause a liquid mixture including a desired quantity of a graft chemical to be sprayed from said discharge tube generally in a direction along said axis, said control device also being adapted to cause a flame to be projected from said at least one flame jet, said flame generally enclosing said liquid mixture spray and being near a predetermined temperature at a predetermined distance away from said at least one flame jet; determining a sequence of movements of said burner assembly relative to a predetermined surface portion of a plastic part; and moving said burner assembly relative to said plastic part in accordance with said sequence of movements while spraying said liquid mixture from said discharge tube and projecting said flame from said at least one flame jet so that said liquid mixture and said flame contact said predetermined surface portion of said plastic part to prepare it to accept paint.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein when said moving step causes the desired surface area of said plastic part to be contacted by said flame generally only once.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein said graft chemical comprises a multi-functional amine containing organic compound.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein said liquid mixture comprises 400 parts water to 1 part of said a multi-functional amine containing organic compound.
- 5. The method of claim 4 wherein said a multi-functional amine containing organic compound comprises Lupasol® G35.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein an injection molding process is utilized to form said plastic part.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein said plastic is contoured.
