Claims
- 1. A postal authority apparatus for checking a security imprint made by a postage meter machine, said postage meter machine being used with a data center, said postage meter machine, said data center and said postal authority apparatus each being remote from one another, said postal authority apparatus comprising:
- a memory and a computer having access to said memory;
- input means for allowing said computer to communicate with said data center for receiving information from said data center identifying a serial number of a postage meter machine;
- said memory containing an identification of data which should be contained in an imprint made by said postage meter machine having said serial number;
- a mark reader including a CCD camera, having a camera output, for reading an imprint, containing a reference field, produced by said postage meter machine having said serial number, a digital-to-analog converter which sets a threshold value at a converter output thereof dependent on said reference field, and a comparator supplied with the output of said CCD camera, and with the output of said digital-to-analog converter, said comparator assigning a binary value of 1 or 0 to picture elements on the basis of a comparison with the threshold value set by said digital-to-analog converter and having a comparator output at which said binary value is emitted; and
- an input/output unit connected between said comparator output and said computer, said computer comprising means for identifying said postage meter having said serial number as a postage meter machine whose security has been compromised in an absence of agreement between different data contained in said imprint.
- 2. A method for checking a security imprint generated by a postage meter machine comprising the steps of:
- disposing a postage meter machine at a user location said postage meter machine having a serial number uniquely associated therewith;
- generating a mark symbol sequence in said postage meter machine which includes an encrypted combination number and which has a corresponding non-encrypted combination number including at least a predetermined quantity and a monotonously steadily variable quantity which changes by a predetermined amount with each franking made by said postage meter machine;
- franking a plurality of mailings using said postage meter machine, by printing a franking stamp field containing a generated security imprint on each mailing, with each generated security imprint being non-identical to any other security imprint;
- in each security imprint, printing an encrypted combination number as an unbroken mark symbol sequence and cleartext information, said encrypted combination number and said cleartext information corresponding to each other only if the security of said postage meter machine has not been compromised, said cleartext information including said serial number of said postage meter machine;
- disposing a scanning apparatus and computer at a postal authority remote from said user location for monitoring mailings franked by said postage meter machine by scanning and analyzing said cleartext information and said mark symbol sequence in said security imprint on said mailings;
- converting a scanned mark symbol sequence into a cryptonumber in said computer;
- decrypting said cryptonumber using a cryptokey stored at said computer remote from said postage meter machine;
- acquiring said serial number of said postage meter machine from said cleartext information and acquiring said serial number of said postage meter machine from said decrypted cryptonumber;
- acquiring said predetermined quantity from said cleartext information and acquiring said predetermined quantity from said decrypted cryptonumber; and
- determining whether said serial number and said predetermined quantity from said decrypted cryptonumber respectively correspond to said serial number and said predetermined quantity from said cleartext information and, in an absence of correspondence, identifying said postage meter machine as a postage meter machine whose security has been compromised.
- 3. A method as claimed in claim 2 comprising:
- generating said mark symbol sequence in said postage meter machine including an encrypted combination number with said corresponding non-encrypted combination number containing a numerical combination containing at least two quantities respectively represented by upper places of said combination number and lower places of said combination number, said at least two quantities comprising at least said predetermined quantity and said monotonously steadily variable quantity which changes by a predetermined amount with each franking made by said postage meter machine;
- when franking said plurality of mailings using said postage meter machine by printing said franking stamp field containing said generated security imprint, in each security imprint printing said encrypted combination number as said unbroken mark symbol sequence and cleartext information;
- acquiring said monotonously steadily variable quantity from said decrypted cryptonumber in said computer remote from said postage meter machine, calling a preceding monotonously steadily variable quantity allocated to said serial number corresponding to said serial number from said cleartext information, and from said serial number, identifying an immediately preceding mailing franked by said postage meter machine;
- determining whether said monotonously steadily variable quantity and said immediately preceding monotonously steadily variable quantity differ by other than said predetermined amount; and
- identifying said postage meter machine as a manipulated postage meter machine if said monotonously steadily variable quantity differs from said immediately preceding monotonously steadily variable quantity by other than said predetermined amount.
- 4. A method as claimed in claim 2 comprising:
- communicating said at least two quantities from said postage meter machine to a data base at said data center and storing at least two quantities in said data base as a list allocated to the serial number for said postage meter machine;
- establishing a communication path between said postal authority and said data central;
- transmitting said serial number acquired from said cleartext information at said postal authority to said data central and, from said data base, retrieving the list allocated to said serial number acquired from said cleartext information and transmitting said list via said communication path from said data center to said postal authority; and
- acquiring said immediately preceding monotonously steadily variable quantity from said list in the step at said postal authority of determining whether said monotonously steadily variable quantity and said immediately preceding monotonously steadily variable quantity differ by other than said predetermined amount.
- 5. A method as claimed in claim 2 comprising the additional step of maintaining, in a register in said postage meter machine, a running total of an aggregate value of frankings conducted by said postage meter machine since a last credit reloading of said postage meter machine, and wherein the step of generating a mark symbol sequence is further defined by generating said mark symbol sequence using said aggregate value of frankings stored in said register as said monotonously steadily variable quantity.
- 6. A method as claimed in claim 2 comprising the additional steps of:
- maintaining, in a register in said postage meter machine, a running total of an aggregate value of frankings conducted by said postage meter machine since a last reloading of said postage meter machine; and
- forming said monotonously steadily variable quantity by adding said aggregate value of frankings to a second number.
- 7. A method as claimed in claim 2 comprising the additional steps of maintaining, in a register in said postage meter machine, a running total of an aggregate value of frankings conducted by said postage meter machine since a last credit reloading of said postage meter machine, maintaining, in a further register in said postage meter machine, a running total of a remaining credit value in said postage meter machine since said last credit reloading of said postage meter machine by subtracting a credit value entered in said last credit reloading from said aggregate value of frankings, and wherein the step of generating a mark symbol sequence is further defined by generating said mark symbol sequence employing said remaining value as said monotonously steadily variable quantity.
- 8. A method as claimed in claim 2 comprising the additional steps of:
- maintaining, in a register in said postage meter machine, a running total of an aggregate value of frankings conducted by said postage meter machine since a last credit reloading of said postage meter machine;
- maintaining, in a further register in said postage meter machine, a remaining credit value in said postage meter machine since said last credit reloading of said postage meter machine by subtracting a credit entered in said last credit reloading from said aggregate value of frankings; and
- forming said monotonously steadily variable quantity from a sum of said remaining credit value and a second number.
- 9. A method as claimed in claim 2 wherein the step of generating a mark symbol sequence is further defined by generating said mark symbol sequence employing momentary date/time data as said monotonously steadily variable quantity.
- 10. A method as claimed in claim 2 wherein the step of generating a mark symbol sequence is further defined by generating said mark symbol sequence employing date/time data since as a last credit reloading of said postage meter machine as said monotonously steadily variable quantity.
- 11. A method as claimed in claim 2 wherein the step of generating a mark symbol sequence is further defined by generating said mark symbol sequence employing physical, chronologically varying data associated with said postage meter machine as said monotonously steadily variable quantity.
- 12. A method as claimed in claim 2 comprising the additional steps of:
- conducting a credit reloading of said postage meter machine by entering a credit value into a register of said postage meter machine;
- debiting said register, upon each franking conducted by said postage meter machine, by a debited postage value;
- printing a printed postage value in cleartext as a part of said security impression generated by said postage meter machine;
- employing said debited postage value as said predetermined quantity in said mark symbol sequence;
- including information identifying said serial number of said postage meter machine in said mark symbol sequence;
- extracting, at said remote location, said debited postage value and said information identifying said serial number from said combination number;
- comparing said serial number and said debited postage value respectively to said printed postage value and said serial number printed in clear text in said security impression; and
- requiring an on-site inspection of said postage meter machine if either of said serial number or said debited postage value does not match the respective cleartext postage value and serial number, or if said monotonously steadily variable quantity differs from said immediately preceding monotonously steadily variable quantity by other than said predetermined amount.
- 13. A method as claimed in claim 12 wherein the step of including a number in said mark symbol sequence identifying said serial number is further defined by identifying a number in said mark symbol sequence which is equal to said serial number if the security of said postage meter machine has not been compromised and which varies from said serial number in a predetermined manner if the security of said postage meter machine is compromised.
- 14. A method for checking a security impression made by a postage meter machine having a serial number, at a location remote from said postage meter machine comprising the steps of:
- printing a security impression using said postage meter machine, said security impression including said serial number, a postage value, and an arrangement of graphic symbols:
- generating a combination number in said postage meter machine having a first set of interrelated places designating a monotonously steadily variable quantity and a second set of interrelated places characterizing postal matter on which said security impression is printed;
- encrypting said combination number to form a cryptonumber;
- converting said cryptonumber into at least one mark symbol sequence consisting of a set of graphic symbols forming said arrangement of graphic symbols;
- scanning said security impression at a location remote from said postage meter machine to acquire said serial number, said postage value and said graphic symbols from said security impression;
- comparing each of said serial number, said postage value and said graphic symbols at said remote location respectively to predetermined values for said serial number and said postage value and to a predetermined arrangement of graphic symbols; and
- initiating a manual inspection of said postage meter machine if at least one of said serial number, said postage value or said arrangement of graphic symbols does not correspond to the respective predetermined serial number, predetermined postage value or predetermined arrangement of graphic symbols;
- setting a flag in said postage meter machine dependent on the existence of security-related conditions in said postage meter machine;
- in a print routine resulting in the printing of said security impression by said postage meter machine, checking for the presence of said flag;
- if said flag is present, generating a further combination number in said postage meter machine including a set of interrelated places identifying a user of said postage meter machine, converting said further combination number into a further cryptonumber, and converting said further cryptonumber into a further mark symbol sequence formed by a further arrangement of graphic symbols and printing said further mark symbol sequence in said security impression; and
- identifying said user of said postage meter machine at said remote location by scanning said security impression to obtain said second arrangement of graphic symbols and decrypting said second arrangement of graphic symbols.
- 15. A method as claimed in claim 14 wherein said postage meter machine has an ascending machine parameter, and comprising the additional step of using said ascending machine parameter as said monotonously steadily variable quantity.
- 16. A method as claimed in claim 14 wherein said postage meter machine has an descending machine parameter, and comprising the additional step of using said descending machine parameter as said monotonously steadily variable quantity.
- 17. A method as claimed in claim 14 wherein said postage meter machine has a continuously running time count, and comprising the additional step of using said continuously running time count as said monotonously steadily variable quantity.
- 18. A method as claimed in claim 14 wherein said postage meter machine has a continuously running time count, and comprising the additional steps of forming a complement of said continuously running time count, and using said complement of said continuously running time count as said monotonously steadily variable quantity.
- 19. A method as claimed in claim 14 wherein said postage meter machine contains a battery having a battery voltage which decreases over time, and comprising the additional step of using said battery voltage as said monotonously steadily variable quantity.
- 20. A method as claimed in claim 14 wherein said postage meter machine contains a battery having a battery voltage which decreases over time, and comprising the additional steps of forming a value which is a complement of said battery voltage, and using said value which is a complement of said battery voltage as said monotonously steadily variable quantity.
- 21. A method as claimed in claim 14 wherein said postage meter machine exhibits a further monotonously steadily variable quantity, and wherein the step of generating said combination number is further defined by generating said combination number wherein said first set of interrelated places identifies a combination of said monotonously steadily variable quantity and said further monotonously steadily variable quantity.
- 22. A method as claimed in claim 14 wherein said postage meter machine exhibits a further monotonously steadily variable quantity, and wherein the step of generating said combination number is further defined by generating said combination number wherein said first set of interrelated places identifies a combination of said monotonously steadily variable quantity and a complement of said further monotonously steadily variable quantity.
- 23. A method as claimed in claim 14 comprising the additional step of forming said monotonously steadily variable quantity from a sum of a next inspection date for said postage meter machine and a monotonously steadily descending time-dependent quantity.
- 24. A method as claimed in claim 14 comprising the additional step of forming said monotonously steadily variable quantity from a sum of the current date and a monotonously steadily ascending quantity.
- 25. A method as claimed in claim 14 comprising the additional step of forming said monotonously steadily variable quantity from a sum of an item count made at a last inspection of said postage meter machine and a monotonously steadily ascending quantity.
- 26. A method as claimed in claim 14 comprising the additional step of including a third set of interrelated places in said combination number identifying a user of said postage meter machine.
- 27. A method as claimed in claim 14 comprising the additional step of forming said further cryptonumber using a DES algorithm implemented by depression of a special purpose key at said postage meter machine.
- 28. A method as claimed in claim 14 comprising the additional step of compressing said further combination number before conversion into said further cryptonumber.
- 29. A method as claimed in claim 14 comprising the additional step of forming said further mark symbol sequence by a further arrangement of graphic symbols each consisting exclusively of symbols with orthogonal edges.
- 30. A method as claimed in claim 29 comprising the additional step of forming said further mark symbol sequence as an arrangement of graphic symbols which are also visually readable by a human.
- 31. A method as claimed in claim 14 comprising the additional step of forming said cryptonumber using a DES algorithm implemented by depression of a special purpose key at said postage meter machine.
- 32. A method as claimed in claim 14 comprising the additional step of compressing said combination number before conversion into said cryptonumber.
- 33. A method as claimed in claim 14 comprising the additional step of forming said mark symbol sequence by a arrangement of graphic symbols each consisting exclusively of symbols with orthogonal edges.
- 34. A method as claimed in claim 14 comprising the additional step of forming said mark symbol sequence as an arrangement of graphic symbols which are also visually readable by a human.
- 35. A method as claimed in claim 7 comprising the additional steps of storing said quantity characterizing said postal matter in a first memory area in said postage meter machine and storing said monotonously steadily variable quantity in a second memory area of said postage meter machine.
