Claims
- 1. A method for scanning a security imprint containing a plurality of pixels having different light reflection factors from a medium on which said pixels are printed, said method comprising the steps of:
- providing a separate reference field for pre-synchronization for reading a graphic character sequence and for acquiring a reference value for a light/dark threshold in a machine evaluation;
- scanning said separate reference field and said security imprint on a medium with a CCD line camera which identifies a contrast value for each column of pixels in said security imprint;
- making a threshold comparison for each picture element in each column scanned by said CCD line camera and assigning a binary value of one or zero to each picture element dependent on said threshold comparison;
- adapting a threshold used in said threshold comparison to different light reflection factors of different media on which said security imprint may be printed, by printing a fixed sequence of symbols as said reference field in said security imprint and scanning said fixed sequence of symbols in said reference field before scanning the graphic character sequence in said security imprint to obtain a threshold value adapted to the medium and applying said threshold value for scanning the graphic character sequence.
- 2. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the step of providing a separate reference field comprises providing a separate reference field comprises providing a separate reference field having said fixed sequence of symbols comprising at least a vertical part of a frame of said security imprint.
- 3. A method for scanning a security imprint containing a plurality of pixels having different light reflection factors from a medium on which said pixels are printed, said method comprising the steps of:
- providing a separate reference field in a security imprint for pre-synchronization for reading a graphic character sequence composed of said pixels in said security imprint;
- scanning said reference field within said security imprint and pre-synchronizing a scanning speed using said reference field for reading the graphic character sequence;
- scanning said security imprint with a CCD line camera which identifies a contrast value for each column of pixels in said security imprint; and
- making a threshold comparison for each pixel in each column scanned by said CCD line camera and assigning a binary value of one or zero to each pixel dependent on said threshold comparison.
- 4. A method as claimed in claim 3 wherein the step of providing said reference field comprises providing said reference field as a vertical part of a frame of said security imprint.
- 5. A method as claimed in claim 3 comprising the step of providing said security imprint as a mark printed as a series of symbols in a field in a postage meter machine format using a single printer module, with said reference field comprising a vertical part of a frame of said security imprint and comprising at least one bar disposed at a height of, and preceding, said series of symbols.
- 6. A method as claimed in claim 3 comprising the step of providing a security imprint having a mark printed as a series of symbols in a field in a postage meter machine using a single printer module including a set of a plurality of symbols in alphanumeric form disposed in at least one line.
