Claims
- 1. A composition specifically adapted for coating the surfaces of tissues involved in surgery and the surfaces of articles which contact said tissue surfaces during said surgery to prevent surgical adhesions in said tissue by manipulation thereof during surgery, consisting essentially of a pharmacologically acceptable aqueous solution of from about 0.01% to less than about 1.0% by weight of a hyaluronic acid, a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or complex thereof or mixture thereof, having a molecular weight of about 500,000 or above.
- 2. A composition specifically adapted for coating the surface of tissues involved in surgery and the surfaces of articles which contact said tissue surfaces during said surgery to prevent surgical adhesions in said tissue by manipulation thereof during surgery, consisting essentially of a pharmacologically acceptable aqueous solution of from about 0.01% to less than about 1.5% by weight of a water-soluble, biocompatible member selected from the group consisting of polyvinylpyrrolidone and polyelectrolyte polysaccharides, excluding hyaluronic acid, pharmaceutically acceptable salts and mixtures thereof, having a molecular weight of about 500,000 or above.
- 3. The composition of claim 2 consisting essentially of a solution of carboxymethylcellulose or a salt or complex thereof.
- 4. The composition of claim 2 consisting essentially of a solution of polyvinylpyrrolidone or a salt or complex thereof.
- 5. A surgical article, surfaces of which are adapted for contacting tissue surfaces during surgery having a coating thereon formed from a composition specifically adapted for coating th e surfaces of tissues involved in surgery and the surfaces of articles which contact said tissue surfaces during said surgery to prevent surgical adhesions in said tissue by manipulation thereof during surgery, consisting essentially of a pharmacologically acceptable aqueous solution of from about 0.01% to less than about 1.0% by weight of a hyaluronic acid, a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or complex thereof or mixture t hereof, having a molecular weight of about 500,000 or above.
- 6. A surgical article, surfaces of which are adapted for contacting tissue surfaces during surgery having a coating thereon formed from a composition specifically adapted for coating the surface of tissues involved in surgery and the surfaces of articles which contact said tissue surfaces during said surgery to prevent surgical adhesions in said tissue by manipulation thereof during surgery, consisting essentially of a pharmacologically acceptable aqueous solution of from about 0.01% to less than about 1.5% by weight of a water-soluble, biocompatible member selected from the group consisting of polyvinylpyrrolidone and polyelectrolyte polysaccharides, excluding hyaluronic acid, pharmaceutically acceptable salts, complexes thereof and mixtures thereof, having a molecular weight of about 500,000 or above.
- 7. The surgical article of claim 6 wherein said member is carboxymethylcellulose or a salt or complex thereof.
- 8. The surgical article of claim 6 wherein said member is polyvinylpyrrolidone, a salt or complex thereof.
