Claims
- 1. A liquid solution for reducing the torque required by a drilling rig to rotate a drill string when added to the drilling mud, comprising:
- (a) about 10% by weight of a sulfonate defined according to the formula (RSO.sub.3).sub.x Me.sup.x, where R is selected from the group consisting of an alkyl group, an aryl group, an alkylaryl group, and mixtures thereof having a molecular weight between about 280 and about 650, x is the number of (RSO.sub.3) groups, and Me.sup.x is a metal ion having a valence x;
- (b) about 10% by weight of a phosphate having a molecular weight of up to about 900 which phosphate is soluble with said sulfonate; and
- ______________________________________(c)______________________________________dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid about 20%;triethanolamine about 5%;sunaptic acids, ethoxylated about 10%;dimer-trimer fatty acids, about 5%; and______________________________________
- (d) the remainder comprising a solvent system including an aromatic solvent for said sulfonate and phosphate.
- 2. A liquid solution for reducing the torque required by a drilling rig to rotate a drill string when added to the drilling mud wherein the solution comprises:
- ______________________________________aromatic solvent about 20.7%;water about 5.0%;isopropanol about 23.0%;petroleum sulfonic acids, sodium salt about 22.8%;dimer-trimer fatty acids, ethoxylated about 11.4%;alkylaryl sulfonate about 5.7%; andsunaptic acids, ethoxylated about 11.4%.______________________________________
- 3. The liquid solution of claim 1 wherein both of said sulfonate and phosphate are soluble in the aromatic solvent and said solvent is selected from the group consisting of aromatic naphtha, isopropyl alcohol, and mixtures thereof.
- 4. A liquid solution for reducing the torque required by a drilling rig to rotate a drill string when added to the drilling mud, comprising:
- ______________________________________dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid about 5-30%;triethanolamine about 0-05%;alkylaryl sulfonate about 3-18%;ether phosphate about 5-15%;sunaptic acids, ethoxylated about 2-15%;dimer-trimer fatty acids, ethoxylated about 0-10%; andwherein the remainder is an aromatic solvent.______________________________________
- 5. The liquid solution of claim 4 wherein the sulfonates comprises up to about 35 weight percent of the liquid solution and the phosphates comprise about an equal amount.
- 6. The liquid solution of claim 4 wherein the solvent is selected from the group consisting of aromatic naphtha, isopropyl alcohol, and mixtures thereof.
