Claims
- 1. A method of treating urinary infections which comprises administering to a patient suffering from a urinary infection associated with presence in the urine of bacteria of the species Proteus, an effective anti-bacterial dosage of a composition comprising in combination
- a. a dosage of methenamine which produces a concentration of methenamine in the patient's urine of from about 0.05 to about 1.0 mg/ml; and
- b. a dosage of acetohydroxamic acid which produces a concentration of hydroxamate groups in the patient's urine of from about 0.05 to about 2.0 mg/ml.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein said methenamine is administered in a dosage of about 0.5 to about 8.0 grams/day.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein said acetohydroxamic acid is administered in dosage of about 0.25 to about 4.0 grams/day.
- 4. A composition adapted to be administered to a patient suffering from a bacterial urinary infection comprising in combination:
- a. a dosage of methenamine which produces a concentration of methenamine in the patient's urine of from about 0.05 to about 1.0 mg/ml; and
- b. a dosage of acetohydroxamic acid which produces a concentration of hydroxamate groups in the patient's urine of from about 0.05 to about 2.0 mg/ml.
- 5. The composition of claim 4, wherein said methenamine is present in an amount to provide a dosage of about 0.5 to about 8.0 grams/day.
- 6. The composition of claim 4, wherein said acetohydroxamic acid is present in an amount to provide a dosage of about 0.25 to about 4.0 grams/day.
