Claims
- 1. Apparatus for applying at least one of a decoration and information on a sign substrate utilizing a foil comprising a pattern layer united by a first adhesive to a carrier layer, and in which at least one of the decoration and information is cut in a predetermined pattern using a cutting device controlled by an electronic control unit, said apparatus comprising:
- a laminating table having a flat layout surface, and having substantially parallel first and second side edges, said layout surface dimensioned to receive the foil and a sign substrate thereon;
- a traverse spanning said layout surface; said traverse comprising first and second supports and journals, one of said first and second supports and journals mounted in association with each side edge of said laminating table and said supports and journals linearly movable with respect to each other so that said traverse may be moved in a direction substantially parallel to said laminating table side edges, supported at said side edges;
- at least one press roll rotatable about an axis of rotation and having first and second ends, said press roll rotatably journalled at said first and second ends and said press roll mounted to said traverse so that said axis of rotation is substantially transverse to said laminating table side edges; and
- a power-transmitting means for moving said press roll between an upper inoperative position in which said roll is spaced from the foil and/or sign substrate on said layout surface, and a lower operative position in which said press roll is in contact with the foil and/or sign substrate on said layout table and applies controlled pressure thereto.
- 2. Apparatus as recited in claim 1 wherein said power-transmitting means comprises a mechanical construction including a suspension device provided at each end of said press roll and having a locking device which secures the press roll in said operative or inoperative positions, and an eccentric device including an actuator for each said locking device in either said operative or inoperative position.
- 3. Apparatus as recited in claim 2 wherein each of said suspension devices comprises a pair of section elements pivotally connected together, and a spring and adjustment mechanism therefor extending between opposite ends of said section elements.
- 4. Apparatus as recited in claim 3 wherein said spring and adjustment mechanism comprise a helical spring surrounding a central threaded strut extending between said elements, with a plurality of adjustment nuts disposed on said threaded strut so that the distance between the free ends of said elements, and thereby also a gap between said press roll and said layout surface, may be easily adjusted, and so that said spring may be pre-stressed to a desired value.
- 5. Apparatus as recited in claim 4 wherein said traverse comprises at least first and second substantially vertical pillars, engaging said first and second supports, respectively, and having upper ends; and at least one elongate, stable, substantially horizontal boom extending between said pillars adjacent said upper ends thereof.
- 6. Apparatus as recited in claim 5 wherein said laminating table comprises a stand which in turn comprises a leg stand formed by a framework of stays and struts, and a flat horizontal frame with horizontal stays and struts forming a base for said layout surface.
- 7. Apparatus as recited in claim 6 wherein said layout surface comprises one or more rigid plates providing an unyielding layout surface, and a soft mat disposed on top of said unyielding layout surface.
- 8. Apparatus as recited in claim 5 further comprising a roll of transfer film mounted on said traverse, said roll of transfer film comprising a rod extending substantially parallel to said press roll axis of rotation, and journalled at opposite ends thereof to elements connected to and extending outwardly from said horizontal boom of said traverse.
- 9. Apparatus as recited in claim 2 wherein said eccentric member comprises at least three elongate members disposed parallel to said traverse, one of said elongate members eccentric in relation to the other members, and said other members being pivotally secured; and each of said elongate members extending part way across the width of said laminating table and disposed substantially in line and rigidly joined at the ends thereof; and wherein said elongate members are positioned so that when said actuator is turned said locking device will be disposed in a different position.
- 10. Apparatus as recited in claim 1 further comprising a roll of transfer film mounted on said traverse, said roll of transfer film comprising a rod extending substantially parallel to said press roll axis of rotation, and journalled at opposite ends thereof to elements connected to and extending outwardly from said traverse.
- 11. Apparatus as recited in claim 1 wherein said laminating table comprises a stand which in turn comprises a leg stand formed by a framework of stays and struts, and a flat horizontal frame with horizontal stays and struts forming a base for said layout surface; and wherein said layout surface comprises one or more rigid plates providing an unyielding layout surface, and a soft mat disposed on top of said unyielding layout surface.
- 12. Apparatus for applying at least one of a decoration and information on a sign substrate utilizing a foil comprising a pattern layer united by a first adhesive to a carrier layer, and in which at least one of the decoration and information is cut in a predetermined pattern using a cutting device controlled by an electronic control unit, said apparatus comprising:
- a laminating table having a flat layout surface, and having substantially parallel first and second side edges, said layout surface dimensioned to receive the foil and a sign substrate thereon;
- a traverse spanning said layout surface and mounted for movement with respect to said layout surface;
- at least one press roll rotatable about an axis of rotation and having first and second ends, said press roll rotatably journalled at said first and second ends and said press roll mounted to said traverse so that said axis of rotation is substantially transverse to said laminating table side edges; and
- a power-transmitting means for moving said press roll between an upper inoperative position in which said roll is spaced from the foil and/or sign substrate on said layout surface, and a lower operative position in which said press roll is in contact with the foil and/or sign substrate on said layout table and applies controlled pressure thereto; said power-transmitting means comprising a mechanical construction including a suspension device provided at each end of said press roll and having a locking device which secures the press roll in said operative or inoperative positions, and an eccentric device including an actuator for each said locking device in either said operative or inoperative position.
- 13. Apparatus as recited in claim 12 wherein each of said suspension devices comprises a pair of section elements pivotally connected together, and a spring and adjustment mechanism therefor extending between opposite ends of said section elements.
- 14. Apparatus as recited in claim 13 wherein said spring and adjustment mechanism comprise a helical spring surrounding a central threaded strut extending between said elements, with a plurality of adjustment nuts disposed on said threaded strut so that the distance between the free ends of said elements, and thereby also a gap between said press roll and said layout surface, may be easily adjusted, and so that said spring may be pre-stressed to a desired value.
- 15. Apparatus as recited in claim 14 wherein said traverse comprises at least first and second substantially vertical pillars, engaging said first and second supports, respectively, and having upper ends; and at least one elongate, stable, substantially horizontal boom extending between said pillars adjacent said upper ends thereof.
- 16. Apparatus as recited in claim 15 wherein said laminating table comprises a stand which in turn comprises a leg stand formed by a framework of stays and struts, and a flat horizontal frame with horizontal stays and struts forming a base for said layout surface.
- 17. Apparatus as recited in claim 16 wherein said layout surface comprises one or more rigid plates providing an unyielding layout surface, and a soft mat disposed on top of said unyielding layout surface.
- 18. Apparatus as recited in claim 12 wherein said eccentric member comprises at least three elongate members disposed parallel to said traverse, one of said elongate members eccentric in relation to the other members, and said other members being pivotally secured; and each of said elongate members extending part way across the width of said laminating table and disposed substantially in line and rigidly joined at the ends thereof; and wherein said elongate members are positioned so that when said actuator is turned said locking device will be disposed in a different position.
- 19. Apparatus for applying at least one of a decoration and information on a sign substrate utilizing a foil comprising a pattern layer united by a first adhesive to a carrier layer, and in which at least one of the decoration and information is cut in a predetermined pattern using a cutting device controlled by an electronic control unit, said apparatus comprising:
- a laminating table having a flat layout surface, and having substantially parallel first and second side edges, said layout surface dimensioned to receive the foil and a sign substrate thereon;
- a traverse spanning said layout surface and mounted for movement with respect to said layout surface;
- at least one press roll rotatable about an axis of rotation and having first and second ends, said press roll rotatably journalled at said first and second ends and said press roll mounted to said traverse so that said axis of rotation is substantially transverse to said laminating table side edges;
- a power-transmitting means for moving said press roll between an upper inoperative position in which said roll is spaced from the foil and/or sign substrate on said layout surface, and a lower operative position in which said press roll is in contact with the foil and/or sign substrate on said layout table and applies controlled pressure thereto; and
- a roll of transfer film mounted on said traverse and comprising a rod extending substantially parallel to said press roll axis of rotation, and journalled at opposite ends thereof to elements connected to and extending outwardly from said traverse, said roll of transfer film extending the majority of the distance between the side edges of said table.
- 20. Apparatus as recited in claim 1 wherein said first and second supports are mounted in a fixed position on said side edges of said laminating table, and said first and second journals are mounted to said traverse so as to move with respect to said supports on said table side edges.
