Claims
- 1. A full-thickness resection system comprising:a flexible endoscope; a stapling head slidably coupleable to the endoscope, the stapling head including: a stapling mechanism having a rotatable staple driving cam and a plurality of staple driving members, each staple driving member being received within a corresponding one of a plurality of staple channels adjacent to a rotary path of the cam so that, when rotated along the path, the cam sequentially strikes the staple driving members driving each driving member distally through its respective staple channel; an anvil moveably mounted thereto for movement relative to the stapling mechanism substantially along a longitudinal axis of the stapling head between a stapling position and a tissue receiving position; and a tissue cutting mechanism; a flexible sheath extending proximally from a proximal end of the stapling head, wherein, when the system is in an operative position within a body lumen, a proximal end of the sheath extends out of the body lumen; and a locking mechanism which prevents operation of the tissue cutting mechanism until a stapling operation has been completed.
- 2. The system according to claim 1, further comprising a control unit coupled to the proximal end of the sheath, the control unit including an anvil moving actuator, a tissue cutting actuator and a stapling actuator.
- 3. The system according to claim 2, wherein the stapling actuator is rotatable and is coupled to the stapling mechanism by a longitudinally flexible, torsionally stiff drive shaft.
- 4. The system according to claim 3, wherein the cam is formed as a wedge non-rotatably coupled to the drive shaft for rotation therewith in a plane adjacent to proximal ends of the staple driving members.
- 5. The system according to claim 4, wherein the tissue cutting mechanism cuts tissue along a portion of a circle radially within the staple driving members.
- 6. The system according to claim 4, wherein, in a first configuration, the tissue cutting mechanism is rotatably coupled to the drive shaft and wherein the cam includes means for selectively coupling to the tissue cutting mechanism so that, when coupled to the cam, the tissue cutting mechanism is rigidly coupled to the cam for rotation therewith.
- 7. The system according to claim 1, wherein the anvil is permanently coupled to the staple head.
- 8. The system according to claim 1, wherein a distal surface of the anvil forms a distal most end of the stapling head which, on insertion into a body lumen, forms a leading surface thereof and wherein the distal surface of the anvil is tapered.
