Claims
- 1. A processing mold for preparing a tire support having a wheel-rim surface, a tread-support surface surrounding said wheel-rim surface, and an internal configuration between said tread-support surface and said wheel-rim surface, said processing mold comprising:
a. a movable mandrel having a longitudinal axis and a diametrical axis, said mandrel comprising:
i. a first end and a second end being spaced along said longitudinal axis, said first end comprising a first mold-body contact and said second end comprising a second mold-body contact; and ii. a mandrel body longitudinally interconnecting said first end and said second end, said mandrel body comprising a mandrel wall that defines an outer dimension of said mandrel body, said outer dimension being along said diametrical axis, said mandrel wall being suitable for defining said wheel-rim surface; b. a first mold body comprising:
i. a first mandrel contact being engaged with said first mold-body contact of said mandrel to form a first engagement; and ii. a first mold support; c. a second mold body opposing said first mold body, said first mold body and said second mold body being aligned by said mandrel, said second mold body comprising:
i. an inlet for receiving fluid polymeric or prepolymeric material; ii. a second mandrel contact being engaged with said second mold-body contact of said mandrel, said second mandrel contact being adjacent to said inlet and comprising a distribution port in fluid communication with said inlet; and iii. a second mold support, said second mold support meeting said first mold support, said first mold support or said second mold support or both defining said tread-support surface; and d. a tire-support region for molding a tire support, said tire-support region being defined by said mandrel wall, said first mold support, and said second mold support, and said tire-support region being in fluid communication with said distribution port.
- 2. The processing mold of claim 1, wherein said first mold body further comprises at least one locking member being operably connected to said first engagement.
- 3. The processing mold of claim 1 further comprising a tire-support reinforcement adjacent to said mandrel wall, said tire-support reinforcement being removable and being suitable for molding into said tire support.
- 4. The processing mold of claim 1, wherein
a. said first mold support comprises a first support end surrounding said first mandrel contact; b. said second mold support comprises:
i. a second support end surrounding said second mandrel contact; and ii. a second support wall being circumferentially spaced from said mandrel; and c. said second support wall defining said treadsupport surface of said tire support.
- 5. The processing mold of claim 1, wherein said second mold body comprises a first mold plate and a second mold plate, said first mold plate comprising said second support end of said second mold support and said second mold plate comprising said second support wall of said second mold support.
- 6. The processing mold of claim 1, wherein
a. said first mold support comprises:
i. a first support wall being circumferentially spaced from said first mandrel and having a first end opposing a second end; and ii. a first support end interconnecting said first mandrel contact and said first end of said first support wall; b. said second mold support comprises:
i. a second support wall being circumferentially spaced from said mandrel and having a first end opposing a second end, said second end of said second support wall meeting said second end of said first support wall; and ii. a second support end interconnecting said second mandrel contact and said first end of said second support wall; and said first support wall and said second support wall defining said tread-support surface of said tire support.
- 7. The processing mold of claim 1, wherein said first mold body comprises a first mold plate and a second mold plate, said first mold plate being a clamping plate and said second mold plate comprising said first mold support, said first mold plate and said second mold plate having a locking member dispersed between them, said locking member being retractable and suitable for engaging said first end of said mandrel to lock said mandrel to said first mold body when said processing mold is opened.
- 8. The processing mold of claim 1, wherein said second mold body comprises:
a. four movable mold plates, said movable mold plates defining a tread-support surface of a tire support; b. a fifth mold plate adjacent said four movable mold plates; and c. a stripper plate between said fifth mold plate and said four movable mold plates, said stripper plate to facilitate ejection of said tire support from said processing mold.
- 9. The processing mold of claim 1, wherein said first mandrel contact comprises a taper acceptor and said first mold-body contact comprises a tapered member.
- 10. The processing mold of claim 1, wherein said second mandrel contact comprises a taper acceptor and said first mold-body contact comprises a tapered member.
- 11. The processing mold of claim 1 further comprising plurality of tire-support members circumferentially spaced about the mandrel wall in at least one of said first mold body or said second mold body to form a tire support having a ribbed internal configuration.
- 12. The processing mold of claim 1 further comprising at least one alignment component that assists the alignment of said first mold body and said second mold body with said mandrel.
- 13. The processing mold of claim 1 further comprising a release feature, wherein said release feature comprises at least one of draft that deviates from 0 degrees, a lock-release member, or an ejector device.
- 14. The processing mold of claim 1, wherein said inlet comprises a sprue.
- 15. The processing mold of claim 1, wherein said distribution port comprises at least one of a linear channel, an annular channel, or a branched channel.
- 16. The processing mold of claim 1, wherein at least one of said distribution port or said second end of said mandrel further comprises at least one plaque reservoir for molding a plaque suitable for use in material testing.
- 17. The processing mold of claim 1, wherein at least one of said first mold body or said first end of said mandrel further comprises at least one overflow chamber.
- 18. A kit for assembling a processing mold for preparing a tire support, said kit comprising:
a. a mandrel having a longitudinal axis and a diametrical axis, said mandrel comprising:
i. a first end and a second end being spaced along said longitudinal axis, said first end comprising a first mold-body contact and said second end comprising a second mold-body contact; and iii. a mandrel body longitudinally interconnecting said first end and said second end, said mandrel body comprising a mandrel wall that defines an outer dimension of said mandrel body, said outer dimension being along said diametrical axis, said mandrel wall being suitable for defining a wheel-rim surface of a tire support; b. a second mold body, said second mold body comprising:
i. an inlet for receiving fluid polymeric or prepolymeric material; ii. a second mandrel contact being engaged with said second mold-body contact of said mandrel, said second mandrel contact being adjacent to said inlet and comprising a distribution port in fluid communication with said inlet; and iii. a second mold support, said second mold support having a second support end surrounding said second mandrel contact and a second support wall adjacent said second support end; wherein when said second mandrel contact engages said second mold-body contact of said mandrel, said mandrel wall, said second support end, and said second support wall define at least a portion of a tire-support region for molding a tire support, said at least a portion of a tire-support region being in fluid communication with said distribution port.
- 19. The kit of claim 18 further comprising a first mold body, said first mold body comprising:
a. a first mandrel contact for engaging said first mold-body contact of said mandrel; and b. a first mold support comprising a first support end surrounding said first mandrel contact; wherein when said first mandrel contact engages said first mold-body contact of said mandrel and said second mandrel contact engages said second mold-body contact of said mandrel, said mandrel wall, said first mold support, and said second mold support define a tire-support region being in fluid communication with said distribution port and said first mold body and said second mold body are aligned by said mandrel.
- 20. A method of preparing a tire support having a wheel-rim surface, a tread-support surface surrounding said wheel-rim surface, and an internal configuration between said tread-support surface and said wheel-rim surface, said method comprising:
a. aligning a first mold body and a second mold body through a mandrel to form aligned mold bodies, said mandrel comprising a first end and a second end being spaced along a longitudinal axis and a mandrel body longitudinally interconnecting said first end and said second end, said mandrel body comprising a mandrel wall that defines an outer dimension of said mandrel body, said outer dimension being along a diametrical axis of said mandrel body; b. clamping said aligned mold bodies to form a clamped mold; c. injecting polymeric or prepolymeric material into said clamped mold; d. forming a wheel-rim surface of a tire support by said outer dimension of said mandrel wall; e. separating said first mold body and said mandrel from said second mold body; and f. removing said tire support from said second mold body.
- 21. A method of releasing a tire support from a processing mold, said method comprising:
a. injecting polymeric or prepolymeric material into a processing mold, said processing mold comprising: a first mold body opposing a second mold body, said first and second mold bodies being aligned by a mandrel, said first mold body, said second mold body, and said mandrel defining a tire-support region for molding a tire support; b. forming a tire support in said tire-support region; c. locking said mandrel to said first mold body; d. parting said first and second mold bodies, said mandrel parting with said first mold body; and e. ejecting said tire support from said second mold body.
- 22. The method of claim 21, wherein said processing mold comprises:
a. a mandrel having a longitudinal axis and a diametrical axis, said mandrel comprising:
i. a first end and a second end being spaced along said longitudinal axis, said first end comprising a first mold-body contact and said second end comprising a second mold-body contact; and ii. a mandrel body longitudinally interconnecting said first end and said second end, said mandrel body comprising a mandrel wall that defines an outer dimension of said mandrel body, said outer dimension being along said diametrical axis, said mandrel wall being suitable for defining said wheel-rim surface; b. a first mold body comprising:
i. a first mandrel contact being engaged with said first mold-body contact of said mandrel to form a first engagement; and ii. a first mold support; c. a second mold body opposing said first mold body, said first mold body and said second mold body being aligned by said mandrel, said second mold body comprising:
i. an inlet for receiving fluid polymeric or prepolymeric material; ii. a second mandrel contact being engaged with said second mold-body contact of said mandrel, said second mandrel contact being adjacent to said inlet and comprising a distribution port in fluid communication with said inlet; and iii. a second mold support, said second mold support meeting said first mold support, said first mold support or said second mold support or both defining said tread-support surface; and d. a tire-support region for molding a tire support, said tire-support region being defined by said mandrel wall, said first mold support, and said second mold support, and said tire-support region being in fluid communication with said distribution port.
