Claims
- 1. A network interface controller (NIC) adapter, comprising:
- an input port for receiving parallel data in a short-haul ring connection;
- an output port for transmitting parallel data in said short-haul ring connection;
- at least two transceivers each transceiver for communicating data packets with a corresponding local area network segment and each transceiver having a media access control (MAC) unit; and
- bridging means for connecting the input port and the output port to the LAN segments with a receiver and transmitter in each of said MAC units and for connecting together each of said LAN segments with the receiver and transmitter in each of said MAC units.
- 2. A network interface controller (NIC) device, comprising:
- a first twisted pair interface (TPI) connected to a portion of said external connection pins for interfacing with a first local area network segment with a first isolator and filter for an unshielded twisted pair cabling;
- a first encoder-decoder (ENDEC) connected to the first TPI for Manchester code conversion and providing for extraction of a timing signal from an incoming packet;
- a first medium access controller (MAC) connected to the first ENDEC and having a first MAC receiver and having a first MAC transmitter;
- a first first-in, first-out (FIFO) set of registers connected to the first MAC for transferring packets;
- a second twisted pair interface (TPI) connected to a portion of said external connection pins for interfacing with a second local area network segment with a second isolator and filter for an unshielded twisted pair cabling;
- a second encoder-decoder (ENDEC) connected to the second TPI for Manchester code conversion and providing for extraction of a timing signal from an incoming packet;
- a second medium access controller (MAC) connected to the second ENDEC and having a second MAC receiver and having a second MAC transmitter, wherein packets for communication between the first segment and the second segment are bridged between the first MAC and the second MAC;
- a second first-in, first-out (FIFO) set of registers connected to the second MAC for transferring packets; and
- a communication bus connected through an arbiter to both the first MAC and the second MAC, wherein packets for communication other than between local area network segments associated with the NIC device are bridged over the communication bus.
- 3. The NIC device of claim 2, further comprising:
- a third twisted pair interface (TPI) connected to a portion of said external connection pins for interfacing with a third local area network segment with a first isolator and filter for an unshielded twisted pair cabling;
- a third encoder-decoder (ENDEC) connected to the first TPI for Manchester code conversion and providing for extraction of a timing signal from an incoming packet;
- a third medium access controller (MAC) connected to the first ENDEC and having a third MAC receiver and having a third MAC transmitter;
- a third first-in, first-out (FIFO) set of registers connected to the first MAC for transferring packets; wherein the arbiter is further connected to the third transceiver, and wherein packets for communication between the first, second and third LAN segments are bridged between the first MAC, the second MAC and the third MAC.
- 4. The NIC of claim 2, further comprising at least one additional NIC device coupled to the communication bus.
