Claims
- 1. A method of making packs for groups of cigarettes or analogous rod-shaped articles wherein each pack consists of a plurality of components including at least one inner envelope, an outer envelope provided with a pivotable lid and an insert disposed between said inner and outer envelopes and having edge portions for performing at least one of the functions of yieldably retaining the lid in closed position and guiding the lid during pivoting between open and closed positions, comprising the steps of establishing a source of groups of articles and discrete sources of first, second and third blanks for conversion into inner envelopes, corresponding inserts and corresponding outer envelopes of packs; transporting successive groups, first second and third blanks along first, second, third and fourth paths toward discrete first, second, third and fourth portions of a fifth path; transporting said groups and said blanks in predetermined direction along said fifth path, said third portion of said fifth path being located ahead of said fourth portion but behind said second portion of said fifth path, as considered in said direction; converting sets of blanks each of which includes a first, a corresponding second and a corresponding third blank into packs each of which confines the corresponding one of said groups not later than in said fifth path; monitoring at least one of said third and fourth paths; producing signals in response to detection of at least one of the defects including the absence and improper transport of blanks along said one path; interrupting the transport of corresponding blanks along said second path and the other of said third and fourth paths in response to said signals; interrupting the transport of corresponding groups along said first path in response to said signals; and completing the conversion of each of said blanks into a pack irrespective of the interruption of transport of blanks in response to said signals.
- 2. In a method as defined in claim 1, the additional step of transporting the blanks and the groups along said fifth path in stepwise fashion.
- 3. In a method as defined in claim 1, the additional step of interrupting the transport of groups along said first path in response to said signals.
- 4. A method as defined in claim 1, further comprising the steps of monitoring said second and fourth paths, producing additional signals in response to detection of at least one of the defects including the absence and improper transport of blanks along said second and fourth paths, and interrupting the transport of all blanks in response to said additional signals.
- 5. A method as defined in claim 1, further comprising the steps of monitoring said first path, producing second signals in response to detection of at least one of the defects including the absence and improper transport of groups along said first path, interrupting the transport of corresponding blanks along each of said second, third and fourth paths in response to said second signals, and completing the conversion of each set of blanks into a pack around the corresponding group irrespective of the interruption of the transport of blanks in response to said second signals.
- 6. In a machine for the making of packs for groups of cigarettes or analogous rod-shaped articles wherein each pack consists of a plurality of components including at least one inner envelope, an outer envelope provided with a pivotable lid, and an insert disposed between said inner and outer envelopes and having a plurality of edge portions for performing at least one of the functions of yieldably retaining the lid in closed position and guiding the lid during pivoting between open and closed positions, a combination comprising assembly conveyor means including a plurality of receiving means movable in a predetermined direction along a predetermined first path; first, second and third feeding means for respectively supplying toward said receiving means first, corresponding second and corresponding third blanks for conversion into inner envelopes, inserts and outer envelopes of packs, each of said feeding means including a source of the respective blanks and means for transporting blanks along one of discrete second, third and fourth paths from the respective source toward one of discrete first, second and third portions of said first path, said second portion being located ahead of said first portion but behind said third portion, as considered in said direction; means for converting sets of blanks each of which includes a first, a corresponding second and a corresponding third blank into discrete packs not later than at the respective receiving means; means for transporting groups of rod-shaped articles to a discrete fourth portion of said first path; and control means including detector means arranged to produce signals in response to detection of at least one of the defects including the absence and improper transport of blanks from at least one of sources from which blanks are transported to said second and third portions of said first path, means for interrupting the transport of corresponding blanks from the source from which blanks are transported to said first portion of said path and of corresponding blanks from the other of said sources from which blanks are transported to said second and third portions of said path in response to said signals and means for interrupting the transport of corresponding groups of articles toward said fourth portion of said path in response to said signals, said conveyor means being operative to move said receiving means along said first path and said converting means being operative to convert each set of corresponding first, second and third blanks into a pack irrespective of the interruption of transport of blanks in response to said signals.
- 7. A combination as defined in claim 1, wherein said first, second and third feeding means are respectively arranged to deliver blanks all the way to successive receiving means of said assembly conveyor means.
- 8. A combination as defined in claim 1, wherein said control means further comprises second and third detector means respectively arranged to produce signals in response to detection of at least one of the defects including the absence and improper transport of blanks from the sources from which blanks are transported to said first portion of said first path and to the other of said second and third portions of said first path, means for interrupting the transport of blanks from the source from which blanks are transported to said second portion of said first path and from the source from which blanks are transported to said other of said second and third portions of said first path in response to signals from said second detector means, and means for interrupting the transport of blanks from the sources from which blanks are transported to said first portion and to said one of said second and third portions of said first path in response to signals from said third detector means.
- 9. A combination as defined in claim 1, wherein said control means further comprises second detector means arranged to produce second signals in response to detection of at least one of the defects including the absence and improper transport of articles toward said receiving means and means for interrupting the transport of corresponding blanks from said sources in response to said second signals.
- 10. A combination as defined in claim 1, further comprising means for feeding groups of rod-shaped articles to said receiving means including a source of articles and said last mentioned transporting means, said last mentioned transporting means being arranged to transport groups of articles from said last mentioned source to said receiving means and said control means further comprising second, third and fourth detector means respectively arranged to produce signals in response to detection of at least one of the defects including the absence and improper transport of blanks from the source from which blanks are transported to said first portion of said path, from the source from which blanks are transported to the other of said second and third portions of said first path and from the source of articles, said interrupting means including means for interrupting the transport of blanks and/or articles from each other source in response to signals from any one of said detector means and said converting means having means for confining each group of articles in the respective set of blanks irrespective of the interruption of transport of blanks and/or articles in response to said signals.
- 11. A combination as defined in claim 10, further comprising means for moving said assembly conveyor means and each of said transporting means in stepwise fashion.
- 12. A combination as defined in claim 10, wherein said detector means are positioned to simultaneously monitor blanks and groups of articles which are supplied to one and the same receiving means of said assembly conveyor means.
