Claims
- 1. A method for compressing data which is to produce a linear feature in a display comprising the steps of:
- storing an address of an initial point at one end of the linear feature;
- storing an initial direction code identifying the direction of the linear feature at said initial point at one end thereof; and
- storing a plurality of delta code values which identify a further point and successive points on said linear feature with respect to the direction of said linear feature identified by said initial direction code and the direction for each successive one of the individual points thereon, said delta code values being selected from an elongated footprint pattern of points which is oriented so as to extend at each of said successive points on said linear feature away from that point in the direction of the linear feature at that point, said elongated footprint pattern including a major lobe corresponding to a single quadrant and a contiguous minor lobe at a corner of said quadrant, the orienting of said footprint pattern so as to select said delta code values at each of said successive points including positioning said pattern so that said initial point on the linear feature falls within said minor lobe and said major lobe extends away from said point in the direction of the linear feacture to that point.
- 2. A method according to claim 1, further including storing a feature identification code which identifies a characteristic said linear feature is meant to depict.
- 3. A method according to claim 1, wherein said linear feature comprises part of a boundary of an area feature in the display.
- 4. A method according to claim 1, further including storing a feature identification code which identifies a characteristic said linear feature is meant to depict.
- 5. For use with an information display system, an arrrangement for compressing data from which a linear feature is to be produced on said display comprising:
- first means for storing the address of an initial point at one end of said linear feature;
- second means for storing a code representative of the direction in which said linear feature extends at said initial point at one end thereof; and
- third means for storing a plurality of delta code values for identifying a further point and successive points on said linear feature in terms of their relationship with the direction of said linear feature as originally identified by the initial direction code as stored by said second means and the direction for each successive one of the individual points thereon, said delta code values being selected from an elongated footprint pattern of points which is oriented so as to extend at each of said successive points on said linear feature away from that point in the direction of said linear feature at that point, said elongated footprint pattern including a major lobe corresponding to a single quadrant and a contiguous minor lobe at a corner of said quadrant, the footprint pattern being oriented so that delta code values may be selected at each of said successive points so that said initial point on the linear feature falls within said minor lobe and said major lobe extends away from said point in the direction of the linear feature to that point.
- 6. An arrangement according to claim 5, further including fourth means for storing a feature identification code which identifies a characteristic which the linear feature is meant to depict.
- 7. An arrangement according to claim 5, wherein the linear feature comprises a portion of a boundary of an area feature to be displayed.
- 8. A method according to claim 1 wherein said minor lobe includes a limited number of other points in the other three quandrants to permit directional changes over a full 360.degree..
- 9. A method according to claim 8 including a plurality of successive major lobes with contiguous minor lobes at a respective corner, each minor lobe having a point on the linear feature therein and including a number of other points in the other three quandrants to permit changes over a full 360.degree..
- 10. An arrangement according to claim 5 wherein said minor lobe includes a limited number of other points in the other three quandrants to permit directional changes over a full 360.degree..
- 11. An arrangement according to claim 10 including a plurality of successive major lobes with contiguous minor lobes at a respective corner, each minor lobe having a point on the linear feature therein and including a number of other points in the other three quadrants to permit changes over a full 360.degree..
