Claims
- 1. A method of controlling a network element processor of a communications network having at least one span, comprising:associating a received fault, received by the network element processor, to a circuit topology of the communications network; determining whether the received fault is sympathetic to at least one other fault or alarm in a same circuit as the received fault based on said associating step; suppressing reporting of the received fault to a network monitoring interface of the communications network when the received fault is sympathetic to the at least one other fault or alarm in the same circuit; determining if the received fault affects at least one other circuit different than the circuit associated with the received fault; and advertising an alarm object to at least one other network element processor in the communications network if said determining step determines that the received fault affects at least one other circuit.
- 2. The method of controlling a network element processor of a communications network according to claim 1,said advertising step advertising the alarm object to all network element processors associated with each of the circuits affected by the received fault.
- 3. A method of controlling a network element processor of a communications network having at least one span, comprising:associating a received fault, received by the network element processor, to a circuit topology of the communications network; determining whether the received fault is sympathetic to at least one other fault or alarm in a same circuit as the received fault based on said associating step; suppressing reporting of the received fault to a network monitoring interface of the communications network when the received fault is sympathetic to the at least one other fault or alarm in the same circuit wherein the communications network includes multiple spans, the method further comprising: associating the received fault to a multispan circuit topology of the communications network; associating at least one multispan alarm in the same circuit with the received fault; and suppressing reporting of the received fault when the received fault is sympathetic to the at least one multispan alarm.
- 4. The method of controlling a network element processor of a communications network according to claim 3,the method further comprising: determining if the received fault affects any other circuit different than the circuit associated with the received fault; determining if the received fault is sympathetic to a multispan alarm in the same circuit; and asserting an alarm, for the circuit associated with the received fault if the received fault affects the other circuit or if the received fault is not sympathetic to the multispan alarm.
- 5. A method of controlling a network element processor of a communications network having at least one span, comprising:associating a received fault, received by the network element processor, to a circuit topology of the communications network; determining whether the received fault is sympathetic to at least one other fault or alarm in a same circuit as the received fault based on said associating step; suppressing reporting of the received fault to a network monitoring interface of the communications network when the received fault is sympathetic to the at least one other fault or alarm in the same circuit; building a database of circuit topology information; and storing the database in the network element processor, said associating and determining steps utilizing the database to determine whether the received fault is a sympathetic fault.
- 6. The method of controlling a network element processor of a communications network according to claim 1,wherein a plurality of faults have been received by the network element processor, the method further comprising: determining if the received faults affect other circuits different than the respective circuits associated with each of the received faults; and advertising respective alarm objects to other network element processors in the communications network if said determining step determines that the corresponding received fault affects at least one of the other circuits.
- 7. The method of controlling a network element processor of a communications network according to claim 6,said advertising step advertising the respective alarm objects to all network element processors associated with each of the circuits affected by each of the received faults.
- 8. The method of controlling a network element prosessor of a communications network according to claim 6,wherein a plurality of faults have been received by the network element processor, the method further comprising: determining if each of the received faults affect at least one other circuit different than the respective circuit associated with each of the received faults; determining if each of the received faults is sympathetic to a multispan alarm or another one of the received faults; and asserting an alarm for each the circuits associated with the received faults if the respective received fault affects the other circuits or if the respective received fault is not sympathetic to the multispan alarm or another one of the received faults.
- 9. The method of controlling a nodal control processor of a communications network according to claim 3,wherein a plurality of faults have been received by the network element processor, the method further comprising: associating each of the received faults to a multispan circuit topology of the communications network; associating at least one multispan alarm with each of the received faults; and suppressing reporting of one or more of the received faults when the respective received fault is sympathetic to the at least one other one multispan alarm or another one of the received faults.
- 10. A network element of a communications network having at least one span, comprising:a span database; and a controller operatively connected to said span database and to other network elements of the communications network, said span database storing a received fault; said controller associating the received fault to a circuit topology of the communications network stored in said span database; said controller determining whether the received fault is sympathetic to at least one other fault or alarm in a same circuit as the received fault based on the association of the received fault with the circuit topology; said controller suppressing reporting of the received fault to a network monitoring interface of the communications network when the received fault is sympathetic to the at least one other fault or alarm in the same circuit said controller determining if the received fault affects at least one other circuit different than the circuit associated with the received fault; and said controller advertising an alarm object to at least one other network element processor in the communications network if said controller determines that the received fault affects at least one other circuit.
- 11. The network element of a communications network having at least one span according to claim 10,said controller advertising the alarm object to all network element processors in the communication network associated with each of the circuits affected by the received fault.
- 12. A network element of a communications network having at least one span, comprising:a span database; and a controller operatively connected to said span database and to other network elements of the communications network, said span database storing a received fault; said controller associating the received fault to a circuit topology of the communications network stored in said span database; said controller determining whether the received fault is sympathetic to at least one other fault or alarm in a same circuit as the received fault based on the association of the received fault with the circuit topology; said controller suppressing reporting of the received fault to a network monitoring interface of the communications network when the received fault is sympathetic to the at least one other fault or alarm in the same circuit wherein the communications network includes multiple spans, said controller associating the received fault to a multispan circuit topology of the communications network stored in said span database; said controller associating at least one multispan alarm in the same circuit with the received fault; and said controller suppressing reporting of the received fault when the received fault is sympathetic to the at least one multispan alarm.
- 13. The network element of a communications network having at least one span according to claim 12,said controller determining if the received fault affects any other circuit different than the circuit associated with the received fault; said controller determining if the received fault is sympathetic to a multispan alarm in the same circuit; and said controller asserting an alarm for the circuit associated with the received fault if the received fault affects the other circuit or if the received fault is not sympathetic to the multispan alarm.
- 14. A network element of a communications network having at least one span, comprising:a span database; and a controller operatively connected to said span database and to other network elements of the communications network, said span database storing a received fault; said controller associating the received fault to a circuit topology of the communications network stored in said span database; said controller determining whether the received fault is sympathetic to at least one other fault or alarm in a same circuit as the received fault based on the association of the received fault with the circuit topology; and said controller suppressing reporting of the received fault to a network monitoring interface of the communications network when the received fault is sympathetic to the at least one other fault or alarm in the same circuit said span database receiving information from other network elements of the communications network to build a database of circuit topology information; and said controller utilizing said span database to determine whether the received fault is a sympathetic fault.
- 15. The network element of a communications network having at least one span according to claim 10,said controller receiving a plurality of faults and storing the received faults in said span database; said controller determining if the received faults affect other circuits different than the respective circuits associated with each of the received faults; and said controller advertising respective alarm objects to other network element processors in the communications network if said controller determines that the corresponding received fault affects at least one of the other circuits.
- 16. The network element of a communications network having at least one span according to claims 15,said controller advertising the respective alarm objects to all network element processors associated with each of the circuits affected by each of the received faults.
- 17. The network element of a communications network having at least one span according to claim 12,said controller receiving a plurality of faults and storing the received faults in said span database, said controller determining if each of the received faults affect at least one other circuit different than the respective circuit associated with each of the received faults; said controller determining if each of the received faults is sympathetic to a multispan alarm or another one of the received faults; and said controller asserting an alarm for each the circuits associated with the received faults if the respective received fault affects the other circuits or if the respective received fault is not sympathetic to the multispan alarm or another one of the received faults.
- 18. The network element of a communications network having at least one span according to claim 12,said controller receiving a plurality of faults and storing the received faults in said span database, said controller associating each of the received faults to a multispan circuit topology of the communications network; said controller associating at least one multispan alarm with each of the received faults; and said controller suppressing reporting of one or more of the received faults when the respective received fault is sympathetic to the at least one other one multispan alarm or another one of the received faults.
- 19. A system of network elements of a communication network wherein at least two network elements are configured according to claim 12.
