Claims
- 1. A memory having stored therein data representing instructions executable by a microprocessor to control at least an engine of a vehicle to provide an incentive to a vehicle operator to operate the engine to improve fuel economy, the memory comprising:
- instructions for establishing a maximum allowable vehicle speed; and
- instructions for increasing the maximum allowable vehicle speed in response to operating the engine in a manner which improves fuel economy.
- 2. The memory of claim 1 further comprising:
- instructions for determining a threshold value for a vehicle parameter which affects the fuel economy;
- instructions for determining a current value for the vehicle parameter; and
- instructions for comparing the current value to the threshold value of the vehicle parameter to determine whether the manner of operating the engine consistent with improving fuel economy.
- 3. The memory of claim 1 wherein the instructions for increasing the maximum allowable vehicle speed include instructions for determining fuel economy based on at least a parameter indicative of engine idle time.
- 4. The computer readable storage medium of claim 1 further comprising:
- instructions for determining a threshold fuel economy;
- instructions for determining a current fuel economy based on at least engine idle time, wherein the instructions for increasing the maximum allowable vehicle speed include instructions for increasing the maximum allowable vehicle speed when the current fuel economy is not less than the threshold fuel economy.
- 5. A method for providing an incentive to a vehicle operator to operate an engine to achieve a predetermined fuel economy goal, the method comprising increasing speed available to the operator as a result of minimization of idle time.
- 6. A method for providing an incentive to a vehicle operator to operate an engine to improve fuel economy, the method comprising increasing maximum allowable vehicle speed as fuel economy increases as a result of minimization of idle time.
- 7. A method for providing an incentive to a vehicle operator to operate an engine to improve fuel economy, the method comprising increasing maximum vehicle speed as fuel economy increases as a result of selection of an optimum transmission gear.
- 8. A method for providing an incentive to a vehicle operator to operate an engine to improve fuel economy, the method comprising increasing maximum vehicle speed as fuel economy increases as a result of reducing use of engine-driven accessory loads.
- 9. A method for providing an incentive to a vehicle operator to operate an engine to improve fuel economy, the method comprising increasing maximum vehicle speed as fuel economy increases as a result of maintaining a steady throttle.
- 10. A method for controlling an engine to provide an incentive for a vehicle operator to operate the vehicle to attain a fuel economy goal, the method comprising;
- establishing a threshold value for a vehicle operating parameter which affects the fuel economy goal;
- establishing a vehicle speed limit; and
- adjusting the vehicle speed limit based on a comparison between the threshold value and a current value of the vehicle operating parameter.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein establishing a threshold value comprises establishing a threshold miles-per-gallon value.
- 12. The method of claim 10 wherein establishing a threshold value comprises establishing a threshold value associated with the minimization of engine idle time.
- 13. The method of claim 12 wherein establishing a threshold value comprises establishing a threshold value for engine idle time based on number of hours spent idling.
- 14. The method of claim 10 wherein adjusting the vehicle speed limit comprises increasing the vehicle speed limit in response to the current value of the operating parameter being equal to or greater than the threshold value of the operating parameter.
- 15. The method of claim 10 wherein adjusting the vehicle speed limit comprises increasing the vehicle speed limit according to the amount by which the current value of the vehicle operating parameter differs from the threshold value of the vehicle operating parameter.
- 16. A method for controlling an engine to provide an incentive to a vehicle operator to behave in a way generally consistent with fuel economy goals of a vehicle fleet manager, the method comprising:
- providing a parameter representing a maximum available vehicle speed; and
- automatically increasing the parameter to increase the maximum available vehicle speed as fuel economy increases.
- 17. The method of claim 16 wherein increasing the maximum available vehicle speed comprises determining a fuel economy increase by measuring idle time.
- 18. The method of claim 16 wherein increasing the maximum available vehicle speed comprises determining a fuel economy increase by measuring a reduction in use of engine-driven accessory loads.
- 19. The method of claim 16 wherein increasing the maximum available vehicle speed comprises determining a fuel economy increase by determining selection of an optimum transmission gear.
- 20. The method of claim 16 wherein increasing the maximum available vehicle speed comprises determining a fuel economy increase by monitoring a throttle to determine whether the vehicle operator is maintaining a steady throttle.
- 21. A method for controlling an engine having a maximum vehicle speed parameter to provide an incentive for a vehicle operator to operate the engine in a manner which improves fuel economy, the method comprising:
- setting a threshold value for a variable which affects fuel economy;
- determining a current value for the variable based on current vehicle operating parameters;
- comparing the current value of the variable to the threshold value of the variable; and
- automatically modifying the maximum vehicle speed parameter based on the comparison.
- 22. The method of claim 21 wherein modifying the maximum vehicle speed parameter comprises increasing the maximum vehicle speed parameter.
- 23. The method of claim 22 wherein increasing the maximum vehicle speed parameter comprises:
- calculating a vehicle speed adder based on a difference between the current value of the variable and the threshold value of the variable; and
- determining maximum vehicle speed by adding the vehicle speed adder to the maximum vehicle speed parameter.
- 24. The method of claim 23 wherein calculating a vehicle speed adder comprises calculating a vehicle speed parameter which is proportional to the difference between the current value of the variable and the threshold value of the variable.
- 25. The method of claim 21 wherein setting a threshold value comprises setting a threshold value based on at least engine idle tine.
- 26. The method of claim 25 wherein increasing the maximum vehicle speed parameter comprises:
- calculating a vehicle speed adder when the current engine idle time is below the threshold engine idle time.
- 27. The method of claim 21 wherein setting a threshold value for the variable comprises setting a threshold value based on a plurality of vehicle operating parameters.
- 28. The method of claim 27 wherein the plurality of vehicle operating parameters comprises a parameter indicative of engine idling time.
- 29. The method of claim 27 wherein the plurality of vehicle operating parameters comprises a parameter indicative of number of hours of engine idling time.
