a write strategy table integrated with the optical drive and having plural write strategies including a write strategy associated with the optical medium; and a write strategy selection engine interfaced with the write strategy table and the write module, the write strategy selection engine operable to select the most current of the write strategy from the optical medium or write strategy table to write the information to the optical medium.
- 3. The information handling system of claim 2 further comprising a time stamp associated with the optical medium and with the write strategy of the write strategy table, wherein the write strategy selection engine selects the most current write strategy by comparing the time stamps.
- 4. The information handling system of claim 2 wherein the write strategy selection engine is further operable to update the write strategy table if the optical medium write strategy is more current than the write strategy of the write strategy table.
- 5. The information handling system of claim 1 further comprising an optical medium readable by the optical drive, the optical medium having a write strategy table associating write strategies for optical drives to write information to the optical medium with identifications of the optical drives.
- 6. The information handling system of claim 5 wherein the write strategy table of the optical medium comprises data stamped in a groove of the optical medium.
- 7. The information handling system of claim 5 wherein the write strategy table of the optical medium comprises data stamped in pits of the optical medium.
- 8. The information handling system of claim 5 wherein the write strategy table of the optical medium comprises data burnt onto the optical medium.
- 9. The information handling system of claim 5 wherein a write strategy of the write strategy table of the optical medium comprises one or more of a write laser power setting, a write laser pulse shape or a write laser pulse width.
- 10. A method for selecting an optical drive write strategy to write information from an optical drive to an optical medium, the method comprising:
identifying a write strategy stored on the optical medium that is associated with the optical drive; retrieving the identified write strategy to the optical drive from the optical medium; and using the identified write strategy to write the information to the optical medium with the optical drive.
- 11. The method of claim 10 further comprising storing the identified write strategy in a write strategy table of the optical drive.
- 12. The method of claim 10 further comprising:
comparing the identified write strategy with write strategies stored on the optical drive to determine that a write strategy stored on the optical drive supersedes the identified write strategy of the optical medium; and writing the information with the write strategy stored on the optical drive instead of with the identified write strategy from the optical medium.
- 13. The method of claim 12 wherein comparing further comprises:
comparing a time stamp associated with the identified write strategy and a time stamp associated with the write strategy stored on the optical drive to determine that the write strategy stored on the optical drive is more recent.
- 14. The method of claim 10 further comprising:
storing plural write strategies on the optical medium; and associating each write strategy with one or more optical drives.
- 15. The method of claim 14 wherein storing plural write strategies further comprises stamping the write strategies into the optical medium during manufacture of the optical medium.
- 16. An optical medium comprising:
an optically reactive material operable to store information by altering a reflective property of the material with a laser; and an optical medium write strategy table readable by an optical drive, the optical medium write strategy table having plural write strategies for storing information on the optically reactive material, each write strategy associated with one or more of plural optical drive types.
- 17. The optical medium of claim 16 wherein the optical medium comprises a DVD disk.
- 18. The optical medium of claim 16 wherein the optical medium comprises a CD disk.
- 19. The optical medium of claim 16 wherein each write strategy of the write strategy table comprises one or more of a write laser power setting, a write laser pulse shape or a write laser pulse width.
- 20. The optical medium of claim 16 wherein the write strategy table comprises data stamped into the optical medium at manufacture of the optical medium.
