Claims
- 1. A method for obtaining a cognitive performance level comprising:transmitting a data series representing wake states and sleep states of an individual to an external device, and receiving at least one predicted cognitive performance level from the external device.
- 2. The method according to claim 1, further comprising transmitting task information to the external device.
- 3. The method according to claim 1, further comprisingreceiving a set of parameters from the external device, adjusting at least one of the parameters, and transmitting at least one parameter to the external device.
- 4. The method according to claim 1, further comprisingadjusting at least one predicted cognitive performance level to reflect an actual cognitive performance level, transmitting at least one adjusted cognitive performance level to the external device, and receiving at least one predicted cognitive performance level reflecting the at least one transmitted adjusted cognitive performance level.
- 5. The method according to claim 1, further comprising providing at least one predicted cognitive performance level to at least one of a display and a storage medium.
- 6. A data signal embodied in a carrier wave readable by a computing system and encoding instructions for executing a process performing the method recited in claim 1.
- 7. A computer-readable medium having computer-executable instructions for the method recited in claim 1.
- 8. A method for providing a cognitive performance level comprising:receiving a data series representing at least one wake state and at least one sleep state, selecting a function based on the data series, determining a cognitive performance capacity using the selected function, modulating the cognitive performance capacity with a time of day value, and providing the modulated value; and wherein the providing step includes transmitting the modulated value over a network.
- 9. The method according to claim 8, further comprising repeating the selecting, determining, and modulating steps for at least two pieces of the data series.
- 10. The method according to claim 8, wherein the time of day value is selected from a series of time of day values representing a curve having a period of 24 hours.
- 11. The method according to claim 8, wherein the selecting step selects the function from a group consisting of a wake function, a sleep function and a sleep inertia function.
- 12. The method according to claim 8, wherein the selecting step selects the function from a group consisting of a wake function, a sleep function, a delay function, and a sleep inertia function.
- 13. The method according to claim 8, further comprising: storing the predicted cognitive performance level, and repeating the selecting, determining, modulating, and storing steps at least once.
- 14. The method according to claim 13, further comprising plotting a curve based on the stored predicted cognitive performance levels.
- 15. A method for providing a cognitive performance level comprising:receiving a data series representing at least one wake state and at least one sleep state, selecting a function based on the data series, determining a cognitive performance capacity using the selected function, modulating the cognitive performance capacity with a time of day value, providing the modulated value, receiving task information for the individual, and determining a task value based at least on the received task information; and wherein the modulating step includes modulating the result of the modulation of the conitive performance capacity with the time of day value with the task value to produced the modulated value.
- 16. The method according to claim 15, wherein the determining step includes weighing at least one of a length of a task state, a complexity of a task, a difficulty of the task, and an intensity of the task.
- 17. A method for providing a cognitive performance level comprising:receiving a data series representing at least one wake state and at least one sleep state, selecting a function based on the data series, determining a cognitive performance capacity using the selected function, modulating the cognitive performance capacity with a time of day value, providing the modulated value, receiving an adjusted cognitive performance level, repeating the selecting, determining, and modulating steps at least once using the adjusted cognitive performance level, and providing at least one predicted cognitive performance level reflecting the at least one received adjusted cognitive performance level.
- 18. A method for providing a cognitive performance level comprising:receiving a data series representing at least one wake state and at least one sleep state, selecting a function based on the data series, determining a cognitive performance capacity using the selected function, modulating the cognitive performance capacity with a time of day value, providing the modulated value, providing a set of parameters for use in the functions, receiving at least one changed parameter, and adjusting at least one function according to the received at least one changed parameter.
- 19. A computer data signal embodied in a carrier wave readable by a computing system and encoding a computer program of instructions for executing a computer process performing a method comprising:receiving a data series representing at least one wake state and at least one sleep state, selecting a function based on the data series, determining a cognitive performance capacity using the selected function, modulating the cognitive performance capacity with a time of day value, and providing the modulated value.
- 20. A computer-readable medium having computer-executable instructions for a method comprising:receiving a data series representing at least one wake state and at least one sleep state, selecting a function based on the data series, determining a cognitive performance capacity using the selected function, modulating the cognitive performance capacity with a time of day value, and providing the modulated value.
- 21. An apparatus for predicting cognitive performance comprising:an input that receives data, a data analyzer connected to said input to select a calculation function responsive to the received data, a calculator connected to said data analyzer to calculate a cognitive performance capacity using the calculation function, an evaluator connected to said input to determine a task value based on the received data, a memory that stores modulation data, and a modulator connected to said memory, said evaluator, and said calculator.
- 22. The apparatus according to claim 21, wherein said modulator modulates the cognitive performance capacity with the modulation data with the task value to generate a predicted cognitive performance.
- 23. The apparatus of claim 21, further comprising a display connected to said modulator.
- 24. The apparatus of claim 21, further comprising a transmitter connected to said modulator.
- 25. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the modulation data represents time of day variations over a 24-hour period.
- 26. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein said data analyzer includes a sleep scoring system.
- 27. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein said input includes a wireless receiver.
- 28. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein said input includes a keyboard.
- 29. The apparatus of claim 21, further comprising a first-in-first-out memory connected to said modulator, said first-in-first-out memory stores an output of said modulator.
- 30. The apparatus of claim 21, further comprising a cognitive performance capacity adjustor connected to said calculator.
- 31. The apparatus of claim 21, further comprising a data collector connected to said input.
- 32. The apparatus of claim 31, wherein said data collector includes an actigraph.
- 33. The apparatus of claim 31, wherein said data collector includes a polysomnogram.
- 34. A system for monitoring the cognitive performance level of each of a plurality of individuals comprising:a plurality of data collectors, each of said data collectors is attached to a respective individual, a receiver in communication with each of said plurality of data collectors, a data analyzer connected to said input to select a calculation function responsive to the received data for at least one of said plurality of data collectors, a calculator connected to said data analyzer to calculate a cognitive performance capacity using the calculation function for at least one of said plurality of data collectors, an evaluator connected to said input to determine a task value based on the received data for at least one of said plurality of data collectors, a memory that stores modulation data, and a modulator connected to said memory, said evaluator, and said calculator.
- 35. The apparatus of claim 34, further comprising a communication port connected to said modulator, said communication port sends an output of said modulator to an external device.
- 36. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the modulation data represents time of day variations over a 24-hour period.
- 37. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein said data analyzer includes a sleep scoring system.
- 38. The apparatus of claim 34, further comprising a first-in-first-out memory connected to said modulator, said first-in-first-out memory stores an output of said modulator.
- 39. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein said data collectors include at least one actigraph.
- 40. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein said data collectors include at least one polysomnogram.
- 41. The apparatus according to claim 34, further comprising a display in communication with said modulator.
- 42. An apparatus for providing a cognitive performance level comprising:means for receiving a data series having at least one wake state and at least one sleep state, means for selecting a function based on the data series, means for determining a cognitive performance capacity using the selected function, means for storing a series of time of day values, means for modulating the cognitive performance capacity with a corresponding time of day value, and means for providing the modulated value, means for receiving task information, and means for determining a task value based at least one the received task information; and wherein the modulating means includes means for modulating the result of the modulation of the cognitive performance capacity with the time of day value with task value to produce the modulated value.
- 43. The apparatus according to claim 42, wherein the selecting means selects the function from a group consisting of a wake function, a sleep function, and a sleep inertia function.
- 44. The apparatus according to claim 42, wherein the selecting means selects the function from a group consisting of a wake function, a sleep function, a delay function, and a sleep inertia function.
- 45. The apparatus according to claim 42, wherein the stored time of day values represent a curve having a period of 24 hours.
- 46. An apparatus for obtaining a cognitive performance level from an exernal device comprising:means for transmitting a data series having at least one wake state and at least one sleep state to the external device, and means for receiving at least one predicted cognitive performance level from the external device.
- 47. The apparatus according to claim 46, further comprisingmeans for entering task information, and means for transmitting task information to the external device.
- 48. The apparatus according to claim 46, further comprising a display connect to said receiving means.
- 49. A method for determining cognitive performance levels based on a data series having at least one wake state and at least one sleep state comprising:analyzing the data series to select the function, determining a cognitive performance capacity using the selected function, modulating the cognitive performance capacity with a time of day value, providing the modulated value, when a piece of data within the data series is inconclusive, then selecting at least two functions, determining a cognitive performance capacity using each function, modulating each cognitive performance capacity with a time of day value, and providing each modulated value, and repeating the above steps at least once.
- 50. The method according to claim 49, wherein when another inconclusive piece of data is found, then the selecting a function includes determining the two functions that would provide the lowest cognitive performance capacity and the highest cognitive performance capacity among the combinations of cognitive performance capacities resulting from the inconclusive pieces of data.
